I was looking for a cough rememdy and came across the ACV and honey but when I was preparing the water it really, REALLY made me want a cup of tea so I already had a tablespoon of honey in about 6 oz of hot water that I was going to let cool down a bit before adding the ACV but instead of waiting and adding ACV I just went ahead and made tea. And it was kinda sweet but yummy, nevertheless. Anyway, I was just preparing to start over and make the ACV/honey mixture but I'm no longer coughing and...well, I just find that interesting.
Dear Earthclinic, I just mixed 2 Tablespoon of ACV with 1/4 Teaspoon baking soda in 8 oz of water as mentioned by Ted. However, the pH strip tested a 5.0 acidity on this mix. I then added another 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and remixed it and tested it again -- this time the solution became neutralized to 7.0. So perhaps the correct mix should be 2 TBS of ACV to 1/2 TSP of baking soda? Just wanted to confirm with you all. By the way, I drank this today and my cold seems to be melting away! My coughing has stopped (after several days of cough attacks) and I am so relieved!!! Thanks so much for such a wonderful site!!! I am learning something new everyday! Regards, Citrine
Wow! I tried the witch's brew (tbsp of butter, sugar and apple cider vinegar)! My cough went away almost immediately! Tastes nasty but it sure worked. Thanks!
For a cough that will not stop, make a remedy my brother and I always called Witches Brew. This was from my Great Grandmother.
Mix 1 Tbs Butter
1 Tbs Sugar
1 Tbs Vinegar
Melt it all together, and take while still warm
EC: You might try substituting Olive Oil for the butter!
Have a hiatial hernia thanks to coughing really badly from a bacterial infection last year (clean your humidifiers regularly people.) It flares up off and on and I treat that by going to the chiropractor who's treatment makes an immediate difference.
This time around, I got a bad cold. Though I seemed to be remaining functional by gargling cayenne pepper water, and a few other things, my coughing was starting to scare me because I didn't want my hiatial hernia to worsen (it's a near constant pressure on your diaphragm, either making you feel falsely hungry, or nauseated like you don't want to eat.)
A few of the things I tried here helped (cayenne pepper for sore throat) but the vicks, for example, worked only for a couple of nights. I tried the thyme tea and that worked out very well. Brewed up a bunch and drank it over two days and nights. My cough is now very rare and seems to just be about expelling phlegm, rather than an irritated throat that feels itchy but not sore.
As a side note, something that may or may not be related is that I think the thyme tea made my period show up 4 days early, similar to how parsley tea does the same thing. It might not be related but it is something that I will keep in mind.
My 79 year old Mother had an upper respiratory infection. She could not shake the cough. I had recently read an article that said steep 1 teaspoon of your kitchen variety thyme in a cup of hot water, as you would a teabag, and sip. She tried it and it worked. Encouraged, I told my friend who has the start of COPD about it, she tried it and is amazed also. The article stated it relaxes the bronchials. Yet another alternative.
Yea apple cider vinegar worked, I am a physician who has been coughing for a few weeks, I think it is a post viral residual inflammation, and I did not want to medicate with inhalers, in any case I tried this and so far so good (1.5 hr cough free)
I am a true believer that every illness has a cure in nature without being tampered with, but I have never heard of turmeric to cure coughs and sinuses.Since I found your website by sheer coincidence, while searching for a natural remedy for my wheezing cough and river-running nose, I thought I'd give turmeric a try( 1 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp honey with 1 cup of warm milk) VOILA! I could breathe again. Thank You So Much EC, you're a life saver.
I started taking turmeric, 1/4 teaspoon once a day in about 1/4 cup of water after my mother told me it quited her cough. I have a cronic cougn especially when my body temperature changes. It is amazing my cough has stopped. However, I have terrible knee pain and sciatic pain but am not sure if I am feeling much relief. I will continue and see what happens.
1 tsp of turmeric cured my cough. 1 tsp of turmeric, 1 tbsp of honey mixed into a glass of warm milk. drink warm or hot. I am reliving all that I learnt as a child in India after reading material on your site .Thanks!
For years I had a cough without apparent reason (no infection). I then noticed if I ate liver the cough completely disappeared within 24 hours. Further investigation showed that I just has a Vitamin A deficiency and the problem was resolved eating liver once a week or taking a Vitamin A supplement. I have found that Vitamin A retinol works much better the carrots (carotin) but be aware not to have too much retinol. I have tested this by stopping the Vitamin A and the cough returns. This is worth a try for anyone having a chronic cough or any mucus membrane problems.
Even though everyone has always told me that dairy products encourage mucus production, what I have found is that very warm milk soothes my throat and stops the cough, just long enough so I can fall asleep
My coughs normally respond to cures noted on this site. Currently I'm sick with a chest cold that has come with a terrible unproductive cough - was keeping me up and none of my usual tricks worked - nor did cough syrup. I thought of how drinking milk kind of coats your throat and I thought maybe it would help get rid of that urge to cough. I warmed up a cup of 3% milk with about 1 tbsp of honey (had previously tried tea & honey with no effect) and it worked fine. I drank half the cup and was able to sleep, woke up coughing later and drank the rest, then slept the rest of the night.
I had a hacking non stop cough for 3 weeks. The kind that makes you double over and kills your abs. I tried cough drops, doctor visit for pills, benadryl, lemon tea and ginger candy. Nothing worked and I was so worn out from lack of sleep. I had honey and white vinegar so i took a 1/3 cup of vinegar and a huge tablespoon of honey and heated it up slightly in the microwave and took a couple of sips.
I was not expecting it to work that quickly. It is amazing. I am not cured, but it gave me time to breath and I was able to sleep through the night and I sipped the vinegar as needed. amazing!
How funny; I'm a real skeptic about home remedies, but ended up browsing your site after doing a search for cough cures.
Of course I didn't believe all these folks' claims that apple cider vinegar and honey helped their cough, but, well, since I've had this persistent cough for almost two months, I figured I'd give it a try.
Like another poster here, I only had regular white vinegar, so I used that (about 2/3 cup) and some honey (a big tablespoonful)...and was, predictably, quite surprised that it really did help! That uncontrollable cough reflex has gone and even the congestion in my nose cleared up. Pretty cool!
I'll be using this remedy (especially since I'm a freak and I actually do like the taste of vinegar and honey!) until I kick this cough completely.
