THYME

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/15/2007: Brenda from San Antonio, Texas writes: "My 79 year old Mother had an upper respiratory infection. She could not shake the cough. I had recently read an article that said steep 1 teaspoon of your kitchen variety thyme in a cup of hot water, as you would a teabag, and sip. She tried it and it worked. Encouraged, I told my friend who has the start of COPD about it, she tried it and is amazed also. The article stated it relaxes the bronchials. Yet another alternative."

VICKS

9 YEA
3 NAY

[NAY]  08/07/2009: Dat from Waipahu, Hi writes: "Rubbing Vicks on the soles of the feet appears to work sometimes, if you're so tired that you'd probably pass out anyway. I did this for my son several times. The first time, it worked fine, but it was 3:00 in the morning and he had been coughing all night. He finally fell asleep and stay asleep for several hours before waking with another coughing fit. The next few nights that I tried it, sometimes it helped him sleep a few hours before waking again, sometimes it did nothing at all. I tried it for myself and it didn't help me at all."

[NAY]  01/10/2009: Janie from Mattoon, Illinois writes: "Rubbing Vicks all over both of my feet, then covering them with my white socks did NOTHING for my cough. I coughed all night long! Won't try this again. Evidently, I must not have covered that "particular" area that is meant to travel up to the throat that's supposed to quiet my cough. Maybe that treatment is meant for people who are born contortionists who could then be able to reach down, grabbing both their feet and then, fling them up to their nostrils and....sniff for relief? I dunno how I missed it though - I put that messy gook all over the bottoms of my feet and even between my toes, just for safe meassure - hmmmm, that musta been what it was - "The toes knows not where the nose goes"! (Hey - Try saying that five times while holdin' your tongue). Anyways, in all seriousness, to relieve my pesky, irritating cough, I resorted to taking the ACV/Honey and warm water and whallah - No cougha! VICKS - MOVE OVER.... ACV is here! "

EC: Yep, we're never sure about those Vicks posts (also on the nail fungus page).

[YEA]  09/14/2009: Ranjana from Arlington, Tx Usa replies: "I have had wonderful success with coughs for my child with this. I slather the vicks on his feet, put on socks and the coughing stops immediately for 6 plus hours, so we can all get a good nights sleep. If he wakes up coughing, I repeat this, and the coughing stops again. I have not figured out how to stop the cough in the daytime. Have had some success with honey with a pinch of black pepper."

[YEA]  01/02/2009: Ken McClelland from Mims, FL / USA writes: "I'd heard that to get rid of a cough, rub a vigorous amount of Vicks Vapor Rub onto the bottoms of your feet before bedtime, and then cover with a pair of socks. Sounds weird I know, but anything is worth a try if you can't stop coughing. So I passed this on to my email list (I didn't have a cough myself or I'd have tried it), and within a week I heard back from two family members who'd had a constant coughing issue due to colds. The results were 100% in support of its effectiveness. A grandchild who could not get any rest due to coughing slept without a sound after her parents applied the Vicks. And one older relative who had not gotten any rest in days said they slept like a little baby after applying Vicks Vapor Rub to their feet bottoms before bedtime. I'm sold."

[YEA]  09/05/2009: Domesticruby from Prague, Czech Republic replies: "Yes!! It worked on my 6 year old and almost instantly!!"

[YEA]  11/11/2008: Maryann from Morton, Illinois writes: "During a lecture on Essential Oils, they told us how the foot soles can absorb oils. Their example: Put garlic on your feet and within 20 minutes you can 'taste' it. Some of us have used Vicks Vaporub for years for everything from chapped lips to sore toes and many body parts in between. But I've never heard of this. And don't laugh, it works 100% of the time, although the scientists who discovered it aren't sure why.

To stop night time coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks Vaporub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks. Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will
stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly."

11/11/2008: Traderjosie from Maricopa, AZ replies: "I have experienced the lingering cough...how about 10 years. So I can help those with it...I felt I should post this. ELDERBERRY SYRUP/CAPS this is definitely what got rid of it for me. I first took elderberry syrup for a week or so....this is important to do before you go to the caps.

Then after a week or so I felt mucous drain out of my head and up out of my lungs and I blew it all out. What a mess. After that I had no more coughing.

Apparently the elderberry causes whatever pathogen I had, to run from elderberry. I am not sure why, but I really don't care. I just know elderberry will work for anyone with this problem...it's tops. Ok so just remember to take more than the normal dose when initially taking the syrup.

Now I just take elderberry caps when I feel myself beginning to cough again and it nips it in the bud.

So there you have it---a great herb.

traderjosie "

WARM MILK

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/02/2006: Liz from Fresno, CA writes: "Even though everyone has always told me that dairy products encourage mucus production, what I have found is that very warm milk soothes my throat and stops the cough, just long enough so I can fall asleep"

WHITE VINEGAR AND HONEY

3 YEA

[YEA]  03/02/2008: Mae from Mercer island, wa writes: "I had a hacking non stop cough for 3 weeks. The kind that makes you double over and kills your abs. I tried cough drops, doctor visit for pills, benadryl, lemon tea and ginger candy. Nothing worked and I was so worn out from lack of sleep. I had honey and white vinegar so i took a 1/3 cup of vinegar and a huge tablespoon of honey and heated it up slightly in the microwave and took a couple of sips.

I was not expecting it to work that quickly. It is amazing. I am not cured, but it gave me time to breath and I was able to sleep through the night and I sipped the vinegar as needed. amazing!"

[YEA]  02/17/2008: Nicky from Upland, CA writes: "How funny; I'm a real skeptic about home remedies, but ended up browsing your site after doing a search for cough cures.

Of course I didn't believe all these folks' claims that apple cider vinegar and honey helped their cough, but, well, since I've had this persistent cough for almost two months, I figured I'd give it a try.

Like another poster here, I only had regular white vinegar, so I used that (about 2/3 cup) and some honey (a big tablespoonful)...and was, predictably, quite surprised that it really did help! That uncontrollable cough reflex has gone and even the congestion in my nose cleared up. Pretty cool!

I'll be using this remedy (especially since I'm a freak and I actually do like the taste of vinegar and honey!) until I kick this cough completely.

Thanks!"

[YEA]  11/09/2007: Joyce from Joelton, Tn writes: "ACV used half & half with honey makes a very good cough syrup which will also cure strep. When my 3 youngest children got chickenpox at the same time, the older and younger to the 3 were faring much better than the middle one who kept running a fever. The next morning he had classic scarlet fever rash in groin to explain why. Yep, ACV / honey mixture to the rescue - I gave all 3 a tsp. every two hours or so. Next morning the ones rash in groin was decreased, and the other 2 never got it. I kept them on it for a couple more days.

After hospitals dis- covered they were spreading pseudomonas aurugenosis(?) via the oxygen equipment, they removed this "hospital scourge infection" by soaking the equipment in 1 part vinegar - 7 parts water, so who knows what else it will cure."
