[YEA] Caroline from Alexandria, Va writes: "Sunlight, Cleaning, Drying, Zinc Oxide against yeast

My five-yr old son had a yeast infection on the tip of his penis. The doctor wanted me to use Nyastatin, an anti-fungal. Instead, we bathed him. Used perfume-free soap. Dried the area well. Put some calendula gel on--don't know if that was necessary but I thought it would reduce the irritation--he stopped complaining that it hurt. Kept him in the sun (yeast gets killed by sun light.) The redness halved by the afternoon. That night, we cleaned the area again. Used a blow drier to really dry the area (yeast needs moisture)--tip from our fabulous pediatrician. Then used some zinc oxide (I used the expensive organic stuff.) The infection disappeared overnight. About 2 days later, he has developed a sore throat. So, his infection was a signal that his immune system was down. Wish that my attempts to put the children to bed earlier were successful. Will redouble my efforts."

Phil from Dearing, Ga writes: "I have just found out today, that a 6 MOUNTH OLD BABY GIRL will have to have surgery for a CLOGGED TEAR DUCT in April. Doctor said infection could spread or blindness could occur if surgery was not preformed. I believe the baby's weight to 12 to 15 pounds. There is no other name that has been given by the doctor. ( He just says clogged tear duct )

So I am believing this to be some kind of infections, since the doctor said it can spread...

Ted or anyone have any natural remedies for this???

I believe the mother has massaged the eye and put warm cloths on it. None of this has helped."

Grateful4ec from Atlanta, Ga writes: "I have heard about this website from a family friend about 5 months ago, checked the website but didn't take it seriously. I came back to inquire about giving children antibiotics and the effects. After researching other sites, and EC, I have found the answer. My 3 year-old has had a sinus infection that has ran for about 10 weeks. After seeing Dr.'s and the third bout of antibiotics (Amoxicillin 2 x and Amoxicillin with Clavicunate (sp?), we realized a change in the child's behavior, irritability and sleeping habits. It was unbearable, our child was out of character telling everyone to shut-up and being mean, the child is normal tempered and loves to laugh this was not normal. I decided to give the child 1/4 teaspoon of ACV with oatmeal (maple and brown sugar) to help get rid of the cough and clear the sinuses. Today is the first day, so I will see what happens. BTW, my child's behavior has improved for the past 4 days both at home and daycare. We will keep you posted. Thanks EC.

[QUESTION] Aggieized from Clovis, Nm writes: "I was wondering if anyone has tried this remedy on infants. My 8mo old is falling off the growth charts and we're looking into causes for his low growth. One thing is that he's had reflux from birth, and at about 3 mo he started taking Zantac. I'm not convinced it's done anything for him, and recently heard of this cure for reflux. Our pediatrician was curious too when I told her about this, but just said she didn't know anything about this cure, and said she's never heard of vinegar being harmful to babies.

Has anyone out there tried this with their babies or children? Any luck?

Even though my son is falling off the growth curve, his developmental abilities are right on track, and even ahead of his age in some areas.

Thanks for your help.

[WARNING!] D. from NY, NY, USA writes: "Dear Ted,

How are you? I hope very well. I am writing just to let you know a bad thing that happened to my son. He will be 2 on November 7th. I was so fool to give him a pacifier since birth. I was trusting what everybody else was doing and industries and doctors. How foolish of me! I don't trust them in anything! How could I trust them on this one! So I gave him the pacifier up to 4 days ago when I checked on the internet to see up to what age it is considered safe for the children's teeth to use the pacifier. Many websites were saying it is safe until 2 years of age, some say between 2 and 3 or 4. The site of Colgate, very honest people, says that it is safe until 6 years of age (safe for them and for the dentists not for the children). Then I found a few sites warning about the use of that dibolical object beyond 1 year of age. A site of an independent Japanese dentist said that if you keep using it up to 1 1/2 year chances of getting dental maloclusions is 30 %; if you keep it up to 2 years it is 60% , up to 3 years it is 100%. His was the only honest site I think. So I rushed to check my son's bite and it is completely spoiled. I hadn't noticed before but there is a huge gap between the upper and inferor teeth. When he closes his bite completely he can still stick most of the tongue out of the teeth! His mouth looks exactly as the picture of the pacifier damages shown in the Japanse site. I am horrified. And I have let this happen. Now it is too late. He will have a lot of trouble eating (which can potentially make the problem even worse as the face muscles try to adapt) and when his permanent teeth will come out he will have to wear braces for years. Thank you Avent, Gerber and so on. I couldn't find a warning abut this on Earthclinic and I think it would be a good idea to post my message to help mothers take wise decision. By the way I didn't give a pacifier to my older daughter and she has a perfect bite.

Got to run! Thank you!

D.

It was clear it was painful, as he cried and whinced whilst holding him on my hip. I remembered the relief the egg white had on the pain of his hand burn, so I thought, "why not?" Within 24 hours, the redness had subsided significantly. Lovely!!"

Rachel from Anna, Tx, USA writes: "Help with baby constipation

Please help- I have a nine month old girl at home with a chronic constipation problem for the last 6 months. If I let her go on her own she may have a BM once or twice a week and they are very painful for her to pass and very large. The doctors are not much help and I've done everything they have suggested with little change and even that only temporary.

I have tried the following: baby laxative consisting of magnesium citrate, changing formulas (from Enfamil lipil to Enfamil gentle ease-helped for about 3 weeks, earths best organic, and a couple of others), raw milk from Jersey cows, omega 3 supplement, probiotic, fresh fruit including peaches, pears, apples, apple juice, pears juice at least 4-5 oz a day which worked for 2 days then stopped working I stopped giving it to her because I feel that is too much juice, fresh blended spinach, Epsom salt baths, massage with almond oil and lavender essential oil, q-tip with Vaseline,
thermometer with Vaseline both inserted to stimulate a movement, steamed broccoli, raw garlic, dark corn syrup, concord grape juice diluted, aloe vera juice and now against what I believe to be nutritious soy formula. I give her liquid suppositories to make her go but she is now holding her BM in because it is so painful for her. I am trying enemas to help but she tenses up before I can insert them and I don't want to hurt her. Please if anyone knows of something I have missed please tell me.

I don't know what else to do for her. She's had an X-Ray which came back normal- nothing keeping her from having a BM. Also she only began having this problem when I began supplementing her with formula when I wasn't producing enough milk. While she was on breast milk she had no issues. But when I went back to work I slowly lost my supply and since then she has had this problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

USE GLASS BOTTLES FOR ACID REFLUX

[YEA] Lori from Dallas, Tx writes: "Using glass bottles to cure infants' acid reflux.

Through personal experience that was followed up with educating other new moms and having them try the same remedy, we think that acid reflux in many infants is being caused by plastic baby bottles.

There has been controversy regarding BPA of course. But even with BPA-free bottles, chemicals are still leaching into the milk, even when the bottle is new and even when the bottle has not been heated (one of the bullet points of what not to do with plastic).

Instead of repeating the details here, here is the link for the entire story regarding my granddaughter's horrible spitting up problem: http://bottleswottles.com/babyacidreflux.html and the link to a followup: http://bottleswottles.com/Story-AJ.html.

Since that time, we have been trying to accomplish a couple of things. Primarily, we would like to determine if indeed this could be true. That acid reflux in many infants could be cured by using glass instead of plastic. To do that, we need to get the word out and get testimonials back to show that we aren't unique... that this is indeed a problem.

Might you have any data on this already? If not, do you have recommendations on how we might go about accomplishing this goal?

Now, you can see from the link above that my daughter, as a result of her quest, started a business. If people use glass bottles, they will need to protect them and that is what Bottle Swottles are. But that is not my point here. I know your site will not promote or sell any products. That's not what I'm trying to accomplish.

I'm trying to figure out how to determine if we are on the right track. We think we are. We've seen it several times. Although we hear from moms that it works, we often don't get a written story from them about it. And that's what we think we need -- many testimonials before anyone will take an interest in this idea. Even my granddaughter's own pediatrician (who we normally are in agreement with) thinks we are unique, that this solution is not common. Therefore, she continues to prescribe acid reflux medicine to her patients instead of providing them with this simple alternative. If we had 30 stories from mom who remedied their baby's acid reflux just by discontinuing plastic bottles, doctors, the media, Oprah would be more likely to take an interest. This could be an amazingly simple and cheap and healthy solution. All we need to do is get the word out. But we're just a couple of moms and have no way to do that. We need help.

Please contact me if you have any suggestions or recommendations or data or research or links to other sites that could help us further this cause.

Thank you very much!!!

Susan from Maricopa, Az , USA writes: "I'm sorry if I'm doing this incorrectly. But I'm looking for some advice. I have a 3 year old daughter with multiple health issues. She is 100% G-tube fed and has GERD, neuropathic motility disorder, metabolic disorder which is believed to be mitochondrial disease. She was just recently in the hospital yet again because of vomiting, weeks of vomiting. She is on multiple meds for reflux and motility, yet she was pretty packed up on view of a KUB, though she was having BM's daily. She hasn't thrown up now in three days but the last two days she has been complaining and crying and then drinking water. she says it's her throat and I believe it's her reflux and acid coming back up. Now again, she doesn't eat by mouth and her diet consists of an elemental formula with Rice Cerealto thicken. She does receive a lot of meds. Everything is given through her tube.

I was searching for something else that we could try to give her for what I am guessing is the acid travelling back up to her throat and why she cries, drinks some water (which is thickened too - and she can't drink anything else or she will vomit) and I see information on ACV.. Any help on how to give her that? Would I do straight ACV, how much would I put down her tube? How often would one suggest? Anyone foresee it being a problem? I have her on a pribiotic every day already and then she is on two different reflux meds as well as mito "cocktails" and motility meds. I'm afraid she is getting backed up again? And why we are having more reflux issues? They have reduced her bolus feeds to a lower volume and more times during the day, but I'm seeing the beginnings of where we were a few weeks ago... she also has many bouts of hiccup episodes. Anyway, I just thought I would ask, I didn't see anything in the other questions like our situation, I may have missed however so again I apologize. Thank you. Susan

Alyson from Plano, Tx, Usa writes: "I have a question: My now 5 year old daughter has had a whitehead-like rash on her arms and legs only is she was very small, with a few patches on her cheeksthat developed over the last year. It has never been itchy or inflammed, although it can get dry if Im not using a natural lotion on her. I took her to a pediatric dermatologist a few years ago and she was diagnosed with pediatric dermatitis. The doctor said it would probably go away when she reached puberty. But she has now started kindergarten and is starting to get a little self-conscious about it. Any suggestions on what I could do?"
