BELCHING ATTACKS FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS

10/07/2010: Sue May from Melbourne, Australia writes: "Hi Ted,

I been experiencing belching for a number of years and though it sound common on this website, it seem quite rare to others around me.

My symptoms are mainly:
1. Belching/burping and can take place anytime. Some time it seems to be an attack ( sound like a frog) and some days are better.

2. I have notice oily food is not good for me.

3. If I am unwell antibiotics makes it much worse.

4. Quite a number of years ago , I have had a barium enema, check for gallstones, a tube down in my epsophagus ( indicate a small hernia), and h pylori test done - all came back fine except a small hernia.

5. I have not had this problem till I took strong antibiotics years ago and bad constipation - really not sure what spark it.

6. I have seen a osteopath but really did not much for me... And I really just want to know what will cure and get to the bottom of this.

7. I found that honey raw and manuka and probiotics helps to a certain extent.

From my description could you please suggest to me what I should try as there could be so many cause to a belching problem. Please Help me out as most doctors will put me on a pill which really willl not be a long term solution. Many thanks Sue"

BAKING SODA AS CAUSE OR SOLUTION?

11/23/2006: Liberty from California writes: "Can you tell me if the 1/4 tsp. of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water remedy will help with burping? I initially wanted to take this remedy because of the chronic burping I've been having, but I am not sure why I'm burping (e.g., acid reflux, "bad" bacteria, etc.). I read elsewhere online that taking the baking soda and water remedy will actually MAKE you burp. So should I still use it to see if it will correct the underlying problem or is there something else that would be better to try? Thanks!"

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Liberty: If you worry about excess burping from the said formula then just modify it. Try 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda + 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid, then add 1/2 glass of water. Or try one whole freshly squeezed lemon juice and add baking soda until the fizz stops. Then then add to 1/2 glass of water, taken once in the morning and once in the evening.

In some case it is a bug issue. So taking some zinc supplements can help, usually zinc acetate 25 mg. 3 days out of a week, weekly not exceeding two months.

Clove leaves can also help kill the bugs, but so can glycine 2 grams/day and licorice extract taken on alternate weeks. Assuming it is a bug issue. But most alternative medicine are food for the body anyway, it is the question of taking them, rather than not taking them.

I have seen one case of excess burping and one woman did persist to take this for a week. Yes she burped like an elephant, but apparently her body's acid was so strong, that she need a lot of it. It stopped on the second week and her complexion improved tremendously.

I also had a terrible excess burping too. One way to know is my body is extremely acid and about to get very sick is if I take baking soda and I burped, then I always know I need more of it.

So when I take more of it, I don't burp at all. If I refused to take it, then I get very sick and my urine pH is dangerously acid about 5. So I guess the condition for my burp is at least the lack of bicarbonates in my body as the cause."
