"Brain damage, or acquired brain injury, is the destruction or degeneration of brain cells.
Brain damage may occur due to a wide range of conditions, illnesses, injuries, and as a result of iatrogenesis. Possible causes of widespread (diffuse) brain damage include prolonged hypoxia (shortage of oxygen), poisoning by teratogens (including alcohol), infection, and neurological illness. Chemotherapy can cause brain damage to the neural stem cells and oligodendrocyte cells that produce myelin. Common causes of focal or localized brain damage are physical trauma (traumatic brain injury), stroke, aneurysm, surgery, or neurological illness.
The extent and effect of brain injury is often assessed by the use of neurological examination, neuroimaging, and neuropsychological assessment.
Brain injury does not necessarily result in long-term impairment or disability, although the location and extent of damage both have a significant effect on the likely outcome. In serious cases of brain injury, the result can be permanent disability, including neurocognitive deficits, delusions (often specifically monothematic delusions), speech or movement problems, and mental handicap. There may also be personality changes. Severe brain damage may result in persistent vegetative state, coma, or death." (Wikipedia)
Developmental Movement Therapy
[YEA] 04/12/2008: Elizabeth from Seattle, WA: "Developmental Movement Therapy is a cure for brain damage.
I myself have used this therapy to recover from minor brain damage due to pesticide exposure. The therapist I worked with was also working with adults with very serious brain damage due to CPS, and head injuries.
The therapy is non-invasive, and relatively inexpensive. Read more about it here: http://www.thresholddance.org/developmental_movement.htm"
Dr. Daniel Amen Work
11/10/2012: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca, Usa: "Sue M. and anyone else interested- This is an audio interview I received today in which Dr. Daniel Amen speaks on brain health and that the good news is that through diet and lifestyle we can have good brain health and even restore it from damage. Because I know many people who come here on EC are always looking for more ways to enhance our health and have optimal brain function I thought this would be of great interest. Of course, another fact is how closely related our gut health is to our brain health. Many who come on here have digestion/ gut issues so understanding this connection is important to know. I have been fortunate enough to see this very knowledgeable doctor speak live with much passion and care for humanity. His books too are amazing for those who would like to learn even more. Here is the link to the interview:
I have learned so much from this man. I hope you enjoy. Lisa"
02/02/2011: Robin from Melbourne, Australia: "Dear Ted, is it true edta cant cross the brain barrier? or go intracellular? What is the best for getting metal out of the brain? My brain arteries are full of ca. The prefrontal cortex is all damaged."Replies
09/16/2011: Pam from Groveland, Fl replies: "Check out grape seed extract pills."
11/11/2013: Mike from Central Ca replies: "Try Serrapeptase to remove anything foreign from your system, including in your brain. ie. heavy metals."
Hyperbaric Oxygen, Amino Acids
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 01/22/2010: Miranda from Atlanta, Ga, Usa: "My husband has had multiple concussions which have led to post-concussion syndrome. After his 3rd head injury, his MDs told him he'd never work or drive again, to learn to live with extreme pain and they only had pharmaceuticals, for symptom control/relief, or a shunt that they could offer. One of his MDs, at my request, found a clinic that would do hyperbaric oxygen treatments (hbot) for conditions AMA does not officially approve of for using hbot. My husband did 40 sessions, 1 hour at pressure, in a 100% oxygen environment, and 11 days later was back at work. The results were extremely significant and all forms of brain injury can respond to hbot. We saw other folks who were coming to the clinic making progress before our eyes, kids with cerebral palsy, people who'd had strokes. The sooner after a brain trauma the treatment begins, the better, but improvement can still come years later. There are many links for many different conditions there; brain injury is not the only condition that hbot can provide healing for. The results for my husband were so significant, we now own a hyperbaric chamber instead of having bought long term health care insurance. That chamber is our long term insurance.
In addition to hbot, we've found amino acid supplementation to be helpful in symptom control. The effects are often extremely quick - a few minutes literally.
Certain amino acids are precursors to brain chemicals, for instance l-tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, phenylalanine is a precursor to dopamine, etc. Using amino acids requires observation and interaction on the part of the healer and if possible, the patient. For instance, my husband, unable to take gabapentin, a pharmaceutical involved in GABA brain levels, found great relief using GABA amino acid, but we had to have the powdered form and initially he could only use 1 grain at a time of the powder.
Neither hbot nor amino acid supplementation has provided 100% cure for my husband by any means, but they have provided significant and noticeable healing and/or relief. I am continuing my search for other routes to healing brain injuries and will share whatever I find. I am sorry that this post is over 2 years after the initial question, but hope this will still be helpful for some people."
09/18/2011: Debleach from Greenville, Ky, Usa replies: "Miranda, could you send more info on hbot or provide an email address. I had brain injury years ago and could benefit I think."
05/24/2013: Joy from Battleground, Wash: "I just found out that a head trauma can cause the brain to have trouble with the hormone melatonin , so adding some 15 minutes before bed can help. I also found a doctor commenting on valerian root in a comment about red raspberry leaf tea on amazon. She said valarian root works right up there with other anti anxiety / sleep aids. Another site had some warnings of valerian root rewiring the brain chemistry, pharms probably do also."
Non- Cancerous Tumor
01/21/2011: Friend from Houston, Texas: "Does anyone out there know if there is a natural cure for meningoma (Benign or noncancerous brain tumor). It is not actually on the brain, but is between the protective layer and the brain. It was discovered when I had a small seizure and showed up on a CT / MRI scan."Replies
01/23/2011: K from Houston, Tx replies: "Suzanne Somers (in her latest book, Knockout) interviewed a ground-breaking doctor --Dr. B________) who has his clinic right here in Houston (Stafford, TX). He specializes in brain disease, providing supplements for his patients, with excellent results! His success record rivals conventional therapy, his 40 years to FDA's 50 years, 80% vs. 5%! If you decide to get your own doctor's opinion of Dr. B_____, be prepared to have him call Dr. B_____ a quack. In fact, the FDA sued Dr. B_____ at least 9 times. There is even a MOVIE documenting Federal court proceedings, (here in Houston), complete with medical records, patient testimonials, etc. Dr. B_____'s patients have never given up, either. They've fought with him all the way toward acquittal, which happened, finally, in 2009. Dr. B_________ WON!!!!! Please research his record before you decide what to do. You will be AMAZED at what you DISCOVER (and so incredibly INFORMED)!
God bless you and Best of luck to you"
05/28/2012: Biggi from Miami, Florida: "Is there any natural help or remedies for a brain aneurysm recovery. My mother 77 years old was in rehab for 3 month and has home health care now but just slowly recovers. Cant use left side of body like arm, hand, fingers and leg. Only able to stand on feet with help. Its been 9 month now. Anything for brain function help to coordinate movements etc?
05/28/2012: Rsw from Uniontown, Oh replies: "I have seen some recent stories of people with MS and some other neurological problems making gains with Magnesium-L-Threonate, a form of magnesium that crosses the blood brain barrier. Maybe this could be helpful for your Mother but I would check with her doctor first to make sure there are no drug interactions first. Best wishes."
05/29/2012: Bess from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Hi Biggi - You may want to look into CoQ10 (ubiquinol form) for your Mom. Do a search for "ubiquinol brain health" and read about how effective it is. Astaxanthin is another good one to have - it's a powerful antioxidant. Make sure your Mom does not have any fluoride in her water, toothpaste, etc. And keep her well hydrated with quality water. I would even try coconut oil - start small - maybe a teaspoon a day and work up to 2 (or more) tablespoons. Take with food to avoid stomach upset. Do an Internet search for "coconut oil brain health" for more information. It may even give your Mom more energy - but make sure you start with a small dose and work your way up gradually. Best of luck to you and your Mom. Take care, Bess"
07/02/2012: Penny from Hygiene, Colorado, usa replies: "I recommend biofeedback with someone that does indigo or scio biofeedback --they have numerous training programs useful for brain injuries and is FDA approved for many things so check it out if you can not find info I can send you info, I myself have the system but also a couple of brain injuries and also use cold laser and far infra red and I am doing well, I work on people with strokes, cancer, etc and have had great success."
06/06/2011: Lovemyhubs from Pittsburgh, Ohio: "Hi, my husband had to go to the ER last night. He is 32 years old, was dizzy, his blood pressure dropped significantly, had trouble thinking. He was on his way to an appointment for work and literally couldn't remember where he was going so he decided he ought to go to the hospital. They did an EKG, Full Blood work panel and CT Scan... All came back well, but one thing. They told him he had some calcium deposits on the right side of his brain.
Today he has had confusion, blurred vision (which he's been having a bit over the last month), and trouble concentrating. We have an appointment set with a neurologist where they will be doing an MRI.
The only things he had changed... Recently he started taking DMSO on his knees for joint pain, it had really started helping (no joint pain now) and also he's normally on benicar 20mg. He has lost weight (on purpose) doing cardio/diet etc and he had in the past week dropped dose to 10mg. Then he cut it out because his bp had been running normal for three days. The morning of this episode he took a 20mg tab, instead of 10. I don't know if this could be causing some of the confusion/etc.
Out of no where his heart will race, get dizzy/confused and he can't think for like 15 minutes.
Any information would be highly appreciated.
Thank you and Blessings"Replies
06/07/2011: Alain from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada replies: "Reply to Lovemyhubs from Pittsburgh, Ohio
If you think DMSO is related with your husband brain problems then stop using it.
Calcium deposit on (if true) might be an indication a very acidic brain. The body is trying to conteract the acidic condition by neutralizing the acids with calcium from other organs and bones. This may also be the cause of the reported knee problems. Stop using any artificial sweetener like aspartame, sucralose... These are acidic. So is DMSO, a weak acid.
For the short term I would suggest two things:
First to try the bicarb solution as seen here http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/obsessive_compulsive_disorder_questions.html
a carbicarb also increases blood flow by alkalizing the brain allowing the brain to normalize its metabolism more evenly. The carbicarb remedy is often taken in the morning and late in the evening. I have since modified the carbicarb remedy to alkalized the brain to be a more relaxed state. In this instance, the remedy is 1/4 teaspoon of sodium carbonate (washing soda) plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon of potassium citrate (or potassium bicarbonate) in 1/2 glass of water taken twice a day. The effects is seen within about 15- 30 minutes.
The problem for someone with the blood pressure with the above is the sodium. Fortunately it is counterbalanced with the potassium compound. So maybe to try slowly with the above.
Second, increase magnesium consumption. Beside magnesium rich food, some supplements can help. An simple source is magnesium sulfate (a. K. A. Epsom salt). There is also magnesium citrate. Magnesium will help in alkalizing and equilibrate the necessary calcium/magnesium ratio.
Epsom salt alkalizing bath may also be very beneficial.
Basic Full tub BATH:
* 1-3 cups of Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulphate) - approx 1- 2 lbs
* Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) - 1 pint to 3-4 quart of 3% solution (adjust to your budget and what works best for you)
Soak in the bath for as long as we can stand it (at least 30 minutes, but not this long to start with)(start out with shorter period of time like 15 mins. and slowly work up to longer periods of time).
Notice: Some who have adrenal problems etc and cannot deal with Hot water Must start with just warm water that does not bother them.
---Finish up with a cold shower.
If we are very sick we may not be able to take the baths initially. If not then we can reduce the ingredients and do a foot soak with the same ingredients in the same proportion.
The above and more bath variations can be found at those two sites:
The carbicarb protocol s/b imo for short term. If it woks it is a good indication that alkalizing is the solution and a better protocol should be used.
For more info on alkalizing you can read some of my older posts or go to the two sites I suggested.
More sites to go to for cancer (besides earthclinic):

07/28/2012: Rob from London, Uk replies: "Hi, I have had similar problems, it was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. This can caused by a fualty gas appliance, boiler, car exhaust, fire etc. So if you haven't resolved his issues maybe look into possible CO poisoning. I hope that is not the case though as it can do a lot of damage to your brain."
10/03/2013: Theerin from South Bend, In replies: "Have you considered long term care, for instance? My aunt had the exact thing going on inside her. Couldn't remember the very things she's doing regardless where she is. We thought at first that it's alzheimer's or something. The result however told us that she has dementia, not some calcium deposit. We had no choice but send her to a nursing home. She's my aunt, he's your husband. Though the relationship is not relative, I can understand what youre feeling right now."
02/03/2011: Nikita Davis from Grandrapids, Mn,usa: "Ok, so I really really need help, my fiance has a problem, at first the doctor said it was brain hemorrage, but when he had his last seizure the doctor said he shouldnt have survived, and no one knows how he did, my Fiance says it's only because of me he did, the doctors arent 100% it's a brain hemorrage now, and I spoke to one of my friend how is in training as a Islamic doctor, and he said to him it sounds like brain cancer, and that he should find a Chinese or Islamic Threopist because they have cured many of brain illnesses, and so we're still looking for one, but it the mean time I was wondering if someone here could help us get a start on how to try to cure it or get a start on where to go for help, because his doctor just doesnt seem to know what to do, and he's gone to other doctors but we get no where, he's in Delhi, India now for school and work, and so we figure finding Islamic or Chinese theorpist couldnt be to hard to find, but I also should say when he was writing the date down the other day he wrote Feb. Not Jan. , he really thought it was Feb. and he's also forgotten his age, please, any advise or help at all I'd be most thank full for, if you need to know more just ask."
09/08/2010: Belinda from Ocean Reef, Western Australia: "Post Concussion Syndrome
My 8 year old son had head hit with a ball, then within 30 minutes head hit when jumping over 18month old. He had headaches, blurry vision of one eye problems walking vomitted twice so went to hospital overnight they did all tests and said he has post concussion syndrome. The pain relief I give him doesnt touch him ie panadol, nurophen. Would anyone have any suggestions? What do people think of acetyl-l-carnitine? Thanks for your time."
EC: Highly suggested (one of our favorites): a very informative, 8 part video series from Dr. Daniel Amen, author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life. He displays the SPECT scans of patients with brain damage that occured from childhood accidents. He stresses very strongly that children should NOT be hitting soccer balls with their heads.
P.S. Many thanks to Lisa from Thousand Oaks, CA who brought Dr. Amen's work to our attention!
Supplements and pH Balance
[YEA] 08/06/2007: C : "Dearest Ted, I'm a dedicated reader of earthclinic.com and wanted to ask you if you could help me with my Cousin. He is now 21 years old and is a product of severe child abuse that led to severe brain damage. His grandmother (My Aunt) has been taking care of him since he was 3 years old. He can barely walk, he is very good at repeating people and he loves to sing. He is also very lovable but knows no boundaries. He has no understanding of pain and according to doctors, does not feel pain. So He's very hard to help because he doesn't' know if he's hurt. They told my Aunt that he wouldn't live past 10 years old and here he is at 21. He can't bathe himself, he can't go to the bathroom by himself, he is like a 2 year old but a very grown man and it has become increasingly difficult for my Aunt to help him. He screams all the time..very loud. Is there anything my Aunt could possibly do to help his brain recover...at all...even a minute amount? Something that I can do for him that would help him? He's on so many medications it's ridiculous. She gets no help from the state and most doctors tell her she should put him in a mental institution but she just doesn't have the heart to "throw him away" like that. And we also realize that if he goes to a place like that..he will most likely be drugged so that he isn't so difficult. It's heartbreaking. He was a normal little boy at one time but due to being severely beaten...is now living a half life so undeserved. I know that you are very very busy and probably get a million emails asking you for help. If you do find the time..any suggestions would be so very helpful. There isn't much about brain damage..or really nothing at all on earthclinic. But I thought, if I was going to ask...you might be my best bet. Thanks so much"Replies
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Some neural growth is possible through certain supplements and alkalization also helps. This I know based on experience of several children of ADHD and autistics.
Smart drugs, such aseural growth supplements include L-Glutamine 2- 4 grams/day, hydergine, L-pyroglutamate (Nootropil), and lithium citrate (taken before sleep about 5-10 mg).
Usually I have seen some improvement in mental concentration with just 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/4 teaspoon citric acid, taken twice a day with some magnesium cirate supplements. Vitamin C is seen sometimes as supportive. Lecithin now and then may also help, not taken often as well as vitamin B complex which are sometimes supportive of neural growth.
Most improvement I have seen is from the smart drugs, and baking soda. The key is to take only 4 days out of a week with 3 days off. Improvement is usually seen within a couple of days and the body often needs timeout also, assuming heavy metals is not at issue, which seems to be the case in children or adults with learning disorders. The extent of brain damage can be from metal toxicity, abuse, or other factors and differences in treatment is possible if the exact cause is known, but brain damage are relatively difficult to reverse, but some improvements can actually be seen. I remember certain cases where almost immediate improvement is seen with an injection of glutathione, which is a natural substances in reducing toxicity of the liver. So in some cases surprises can be seen."
05/19/2010: Stranger from Montreal, Q replies: "Hi, I've read that some boxers use a supplement called "spirulina" to help repair brain injury. Apparently it encourages stem cell growth in the brain and some parkinson's patients use it to treat themselves. Research it on google yourself if you don't believe me."
07/21/2012: Sandhya from Kihei, Hawaii Usa replies: "Around 10 years ago I suffered a bad brain injury just from a whiplash in a car accident. The logical side of the brain was fuzzy and it was hard to focus. I felt like an ADD kid with a right sided stroke. I found out about Brain State Technology which works with the frequencies of the brain. I got rid of most of the brain injury, PTS, flat affect, and grand mal seizures by doing several rounds of Brain State. It works with the pre frontal cortex and optimizes the brain. Both my brother and nephew suffered from brain injury as well we discovered NOT ADD as we were told. Their anger cleared up and they had much better social skills as well as getting off anti depression and pain pills. I then saw other friends do it with amazing results. Check it out..... My brain injury was 7 years old and the epilepsy was 32 years old.... And I had great results..... Very little brain injury left and no seizures. Check it out. Good luck.... It does work. There is help for more than just brain injury doing this work. Blood pressure, anxiety and panic attacks, addictions, OCD, etc. The list goes on. Good luck."

What can I do to help her develop well mentally and physically?"
08/13/2012: Timh from Louisville, Ky replies: "Jessica, consider the amino acid Taurine as it is very benificial for brain health. Sprinkle half a capsule in formula and stir. Also make sure her formula has DHA or change formula altogether. Is this your first child? Are you breastfeeding?"
08/13/2012: Rswuniontown from Uniontown, Oh replies: "Please look into the ketogenic diet for your daughter. It was started at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. A popular advocate of the diet is Jim Abraham whose son, Charlie, went from having over 100 seizures a day to none within 48 hours on the diet, after being on many different meds. You can find info at the charliefoundation if you google it. Best wishes!"
08/13/2012: Adc from Phoenix, Az replies: "For Jessica in TX - have you considered environmental toxins to be a possible cause for your sweet girl's seizures? I recently read of a case where a baby was having unexplained seizures. The parents had prepared the baby room with new paint, new carpet, new furniture (particle board-based), new baby mattress - everything new was off-gassing toxins. When the doctor suggested moving the baby to a different room, the seizures quit. Just a thought. Good luck!"
