High Blood Pressure Remedies

Updated: 07/01/2009

"Blood pressure (strictly speaking: vascular pressure) refers to the force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels, and constitutes one of the principal vital signs. The pressure of the circulating blood decreases as blood moves through arteries, arterioles, capillaries, and veins; the term blood pressure generally refers to arterial pressure, i.e., the pressure in the larger arteries, arteries being the blood vessels which take blood away from the heart. Arterial pressure is most commonly measured via a sphygmomanometer, which uses the height of a column of mercury to reflect the circulating pressure (see Non-invasive measurement). Blood pressure values are reported in either kilopascals (kPa) or in millimetres of mercury (mmHg), despite many modern vascular pressure devices no longer using mercury.
[...]
Typical values for a resting, healthy adult human are approximately 120 mmHg (16 kPa) systolic and 80 mmHg (11 kPa) diastolic (written as 120/80 mmHg, and spoken as "one twenty over eighty") with large individual variations. These measures of arterial pressure are not static, but undergo natural variations from one heartbeat to another and throughout the day (in a circadian rhythm); they also change in response to stress, nutritional factors, drugs, or disease. Hypertension refers to arterial pressure being abnormally high, as opposed to hypotension, when it is abnormally low. Along with body temperature, blood pressure measurements are the most commonly measured physiological parameters." (Wikipedia)

TED'S REMEDIES

09/29/2007: Ted writes: "Subject: Is the Sodium Responsible for Blood Pressure or Is it the Chloride:While the problems of chlorides was known almost a century ago, not the sodium problem, many people keep arguing to me about the sodium. Sodium bicarbonate and sodium citrate don't cause blood pressure to rise. It is the halogens, in particular is the chloride found in sodium chloride, fluoride, bromine (this one is powerful) are the ones that caused the most problem based on my own observations. Here is some recent medical literature regarding my observations:: Med Hypotheses. 2004;63(1):138-48.Links

Should we restrict chloride rather than sodium? McCarty MF.

Pantox Laboratories, 4622 Santa Fe St., San Diego, CA 92109, USA. mmccarty@nai-online.com

Low-salt diets have potential for prevention and treatment of hypertension, and may also reduce risk for stroke, left ventricular hypertrophy, osteoporosis, renal stones, asthma, cataract, gastric pathology, and possibly even senile dementia. Nonetheless, the fact that salt restriction evokes certain counter-regulatory metabolic responses-- increased production of renin and angiotensin II, as well as increased sympathetic activity--that are potentially inimical to vascular health, has suggested to some observers that salt restriction might not be of unalloyed benefit, and might in fact be contraindicated in some "salt-resistant" subjects. Current epidemiology indicates that lower-salt diets tend to reduce coronary risk quite markedly in obese subjects, whereas the impact of such diets on leaner subjects (who are less likely to be salt sensitive) is equivocal--seemingly consistent with the possibility that salt restriction can exert countervailing effects on vascular health. There is considerable evidence that sodium chloride, rather than sodium per se, is responsible for the known adverse effects of dietary salt. Other non-halide sodium salts, such as sodium citrate or bicarbonate, do not raise plasma volume, increase blood pressure, boost urinary calcium loss, or promote stroke in stroke-prone rats. Nonetheless, these compounds have been shown to blunt the impact of salt restriction on renin, angiotensin II, and sympathetic activity in humans. This may rationalize limited clinical evidence that organic sodium salts can decrease blood pressure in salt-restricted hypertensives. Furthermore, organic sodium salts have an alkalinizing metabolic impact favorable to bone health. These considerations suggest that restricting dietary salt to the extent feasible, while encouraging consumption of organic sodium salts in mineral waters, soft drinks, or other nutraceuticals--preferably in conjunction with organic potassium salts and taurine--may represent a superior strategy for controlling blood pressure, promoting vascular health, and preserving bone density. Further clinical studies should determine whether a moderately salt-restricted diet supplemented with organic sodium salts has a better and more uniform impact on hypertension than salt restriction alone, while rodent studies should examine the comparative impact of these regimens on rodents prone to vascular disease.

Is it the Veniger, the Mother or the combined pair that makes up the vital component?"

[YEA]  06/23/2009: Noels from Wolverhampton, UK writes: "I do hope this isn't the second post by me today. Just as I was sending the first my email crashed. Anyway I'm 74 and 10yrs ago had high BP 180/120. My Doc put me on Antenolol 50mg/day which brought it down to round about 145/90. In the last 2 months I have been taking ACV maintenance dose 3xday and my BP has come down 120/89, 115/80 and yesterday 112/60 great???

Question do I still keep taking ACV, Will my BP stabilise or should I stop before it gets dangerously low?

Since taking ACV I have felt like a new person very lively and active. I also lost 4Lbs in weight and some of my hearing has returned. I wear 2 hearing aids. Any helpful comments very welcome

[YEA]  06/08/2009: Sunsong from Mission, BC, Canada writes: "I started using the Earth Clinic recommended dose of ACV (with the mother) just 4 days ago. I started using it in hopes that it would help with my aches and pains, as well as with my weight. Well I'm not one to weigh myself on the scale, but i did feel a little more energetic and clearer in the mind after starting the ACV. What totally took me by surprise was when i measured my blood pressure in a drug store this morning whilst i was in town doing some shopping. It had dropped to 116/65, (and that is after walking with my heart pounding). It had consistently been 130/87 or so for the last year (it was a biochemically stressful year for me). I was going to go back on Niacin (vitamin B3) because it is so good for the cardiovascular system, but if the ACV works this good on blood pressure i am going to tell everyone i know.

I sat at the drugstore blood pressure machine shocked.......how could something work this FAST?? Then i came home and went right to the Earth Clinic website to read others stories on blood pressure and ACV. I didn't KNOW it also worked for blood pressure!!!! Two thumbs up for ACV.....WOW"

[YEA]  05/29/2009: Patrick from Nassau, Bahamas writes: "Well I went to the doctor for the first time in years, two days ago. They told me that my blood pressure was 140/76. I went because for the past few days I was feeling extremely tired and I got dizzy when I would stand to long or do any work. I knew something was wrong. When she told me, I kinda expected it.

I was always and active person but as of late since I got this new job it's like I'm stuck behind the desk constantly and then when I get home I have my own work to do. I am a photographer and graphic artist. And with the slow in the economy, every penny counts. My father used to have HBP, Gout and he had 2 or 3 heart attacks in his lifetime.

I took it hard when I was told I was borderline high. I wasn't prescribed anything but exercise and ease up off the fatty foods, sodas, caffeine,...... all the bad stuff. As soon as I got to my computer I started googling and came up with earthclinic.

Thanks to you guys, I went out and got the ___ [apple cider vinegar] and took 2 tbs raw before i went to bed.

Got up the next morning and felt like a new man. And now I have gotten back into my routine exercise. I haven't had no fast foods or junk for the past few days, just fruits vegetables and lean meats. No coffee tea or sodas. Just water and certain juices.

It's amazing how we wait until things happen before we take action. But YEA the ___with Mother works. After the first dose I started using the 2tsp ACV with 8oz Water and a squeeze of lemon. And it tastes good too. :)"

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  05/27/2009: Geena (g_brangers[at]hotmail.com) from Selma, NC writes: "I am 46 yrs old. 2 months ago my doctor prescribed 20 mg of lisinopril for my high blood pressure (140/102 or there abouts) and increased zoloft to 150 mg/day. After my 30 day follow-up my blood pressure was 140/84. I told the dr. that I had been experiencing coughing mainly at night. She said it might be allergies and to continue with what I had been doing. Well, since that check-up coughing has gotten more consistent rather than only at night I also cough during the day and have been feeling very tired and have had tingling in my hands (not shooting up the arm, thankfully). Last week I started taking apple cidar vinegar and my bp dropped dramatically. So, this week I stopped taking the lisinopril. The tingling has gone away and the tiredness going away as well. My problem is that today my bp was 149/102 and pulse 85. I've been taking 1 TBS ACV in 8 oz. of water (2TBS made me sick to my stomach.) Are the above common side effects of lisinopril and how many TBS spoons of ACV is approrpriate per day? I assume it would be okay to spread the ACV out over the course of the day?"

EC: http://www.drugs.com/sfx/lisinopril-side-effects.html

06/22/2009: Kathy from Raleigh, NC replies: "You were prescibed what is known as a "pril" BP med. My suggestion is that you get a new Dr. because night coughing is a very, very common side effect of any "pril" med. They should have known that! Ask for something different if the ACV doesn't work!"

[YEA]  05/21/2009: Michele from Earlville, New York, USA writes: "Apple Cider vinegar and High Blood Pressure - YEA!!! Organic Apple Cider Vinegar works like a charm! One Tablespoon in eight ounces of water, three times a day. Within one day my blood pressure was down fifteen points. In three days it was down by thirty points. I'm in my mid 50's, meditate daily, I'm slender, very athletic, don't drink, don't smoke, no sugar, no caffeine, little salt (mineral sea salt only), no processed foods, all as organic and close to original as possible. Some fish, some meat, some dairy. Am taking fresh garlic, CoQ10, Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium, Omega 3's fish oil, Vit. C, E, B's, etc. Doc said I shouldn't have HBP, but went on to prescribe my first and only Rx. (I did have serious stress for the last few years.) I decided to go the natural/home remedy route first. I found STRENUOUS aerobic exercise, daily, to be the only thing to reliably make a difference, but it was exhausting. (Simple walking, gardening or cycling wasn't enough...) I found Earth Clinic's ACV reviews and gave it a try. WOW! Thank you! My guess is, that I wasn't producing enough stomach acid to process the nutrients I was taking in, properly. (Stress and adrenaline will shut down digestion, and digestive juices. This could also just be a natural aging affect or an inherited trait, too.) Anyway, I think the ACV added just enough acid to digest my food properly and especially make use of magnesium/calcium and potassium.(The holy triumvirate of blood pressure.) This is my guess... Thank you all for posting your reviews. They were most helpful. And thank you Earth Clinic! Kind regards, Michele"

I saw someone else ask...but didn't see an answer.. what would be the difference if you mixed up 2TBLS ACV with some Olive Oil and covered a large salad and ate it all, then chased it with 8 oz water?? It all goes in the same place (stomach) - does anyone think the effects would be different?

Thanks everyone."

Never had high blood pressure yet (I'm 61), but started reading this site for my husband and I think that you can use it anyway you feel is better for you - with water, with salad, whatever works. Give it a try, it is really good stuff. Be well."

06/21/2009: JB from Appleton, WI, USA replies: "Just wanted to comment on the taste of ACV... I mix the 2 tbls with 8oz of tomato juice. Tastes pretty good, and I don't think the acid in tomato juice would harm the benefits of ACV (I would think tomato juice has it's own benefits too)."

06/23/2009: MrsMcBear from Shoreline, WA, USA replies: "When I drink tomato juice or the vegetable juice that looks like tomato juice (they'll just remove the name anyway), I get horrible heartburn. Will putting ACV in it help the heartburn, or will it be like putting gasoline on a fire? And, by the way, if I am getting heartburn with the juicesw, does it mean I really DO have too much acid instead of too little and shouldn't be taking ACV at all?"

[YEA]  05/16/2009: Princess Dolly Girl (wondertwin@vzw.blackberry.net) from Great Falls, Montana writes: "Like many of you have been amazed to find how apple cider vinegar aids in lowering blood pressure, I too am happily amazed. I have had HBP for 10 years(I am 40) Almost 3 months ago I started a new BP medicine and my BP continues to get higher. I started taking tyrosine to help with mood swings and anxiety. It is working GREAT but it has started raising my BP even more. So today I went searching for something natural and ended up here. Last week my BP was 168/113. Today after I took 2 doses of 2 tablespoons of ACV in 8 oz of water with 1 teaspoon of honey my BP was 149/99. I was so hoping I would see a difference right away. I was not disappointed. Thank you all for your knowledge and the willingness to share it."

My doc put me on BP meds.(about a year now) I started doing ACV for health purposes, I have been mixing ACV and water (4 tbsp ACV in 20 oz of water) 2-3 X's a day. I started this about a month ago. The last several days my BP was plummeting to 90/50. I started wondering what was causing this. It dawned on me maybe it is the ACV. I was taking it mainly for curbing carb cravings and weight loss. I did not know about the BP benefits. I am not advising anybody to go off meds for their BP. I have gone off mine and I will tell my Dr. about this. I also don't feel sluggish anymore. My allergies have improved greatly. My eyes are brighter. I have not seen any reduction in reduction of carb cravings or weight loss I am thrilled overall with the other benefits. I am hoping my cholesterol will also be better!"

[NAY]  04/06/2009: Nancy from Canon City, Colorado writes: "I was very excited to try ACV. One Tablespoon every morning has completely taken away my husband's lactose intolerance and greatly improved acid reflux.

But for my high BP--nothing. It's been going up for three years as I approached and then entered menopause. Now I'm getting consistent upper 140's over 90's and often 150's over 90's and 100's.

I've been doing 2 Tablespoon ____ ACV three times a day for three days, and one Tablespoon three times a day for two days before that. No change for five days. I'm so disappointed.

All that's left is see if time with Grape Seed Extract and Potassium will help. SO far, not even that has, but I've only done all the above for 5 days. I'm also waiting on Ecklonia cava to arrive--brown seaweed with interesting free radical and blood pressure lowering properties."

04/07/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hi Nancy,

Have you tried eating 4 stems or stalks of celery a day? It is said to lower blood pressure. More things to consider is a magnesium supplement (can buy Beelith tablets of right dosage combined with B6 & take 2 x day), and unless you eat a lot of vegetables a potassium supplement should also help to lower blood pressure."

05/14/2009: Nancy from Dallas, Texas replies: "UPDATE: I wrote the above "Nay" about ACV on 4-6. But..I want to report something VERY important. I found out via the blog on the Stop the Thyroid Madness site that most of us are taking our blood pressure wrong--me included. Our arm needs to be perpendicular to our bodies, NOT lower. There is much documentation about this on the net, too! When I started doing it that way, my lower number was 10-20 points lower depending on what time of the day I was doing it, and my upper number was 5-10 points lower!! This is important information!"

05/17/2009: Ricardo from Hollywood, FL replies: "I'm glad to see you're getting better results, however if all else fails what I've done to really drop my blood pressure rapidly because I've been on meds for over 15 years and I' up to 5 a day, blend a half of a white or yellow onion with about 8ozs of water and drink it. Get some rest and you will get immediate result. It will drop very close to normal. It works for me. I only do it on occasion by he way. Regularly I squeeze a half of lemon in a glass of water twice a day and it works great."

Recently began to notice a difference in left and right side blood pressure (left arm normal range 110/70 and right side elevated to 148/68. Onset fairly recent and only at night after dinner. Considered possiblility of high protein intake at evening meal but was unconvinced that was the cause though it may be reducing viscosity of blood and a contibuting factor. A few months ago changed my nutrition plan to improve pH using a significant alkalinizing product. Result appears to be that the increased alkalinity is reducing potassium. Addition of ACV has balance the blood pressure so it is equal on both the left and right arma and in the normal range between 100/70-120/80 Pulse 62 after 2 days of use (2 tsp only in evening. Never occurred to me that improving pH of saliva could result in decreased potassium levels but apparently it has in my situation and ACV restores imbalance and therfore blood pressure normalizes. 04/17/2009: HealthGuy from Denver, CO replies: "In response to your question if the ACV will react with other supplements. The answer is no.

I've taken supplements and ACV for a long time and had no problems. Most people end up with acid reflux from a hypo-acidic environment (too little stomach acid).

If the stomach acid were to remain high enough, it would adequately break down the various foods we eat adequately.

Most people over the age of 35 end up having too little stomach acid - so it's not true that doctors say we have too much acid and then put millions of people on anti-acid and PPI meds to block the acid reflux.

I was on those medications and had more problems than I started with. Besides, they actually weaken the bones and elevate the risk of heart attack, stroke and a number of other medical issues."

I was at work last Friday and suddenly started to feel light-headed. My co-worker suggested that I take my blood pressure using her unit. To our surprise my blood pressure read 168/99. Never have I had a reading that high. Another co-worker who lives close by went home and returned with a small plastic cup with ACV. I took two tablespoons approximately and drank it straight. No too bad! After one hour it went down to 144/88 and then one hour later it read 127/84. I was feeling alot better... so ACV WORKS.

Question?? Should I get the organic brand or will any brand work for weight loss? I am taking two tablespoons in the morning and is mixing ACV with water to drink during the day. Now I am trying to see if the weight loss thing will work. Will keep you posted."

02/19/2009: Laura Oliver (JohnOliver7@charter.net) from Birmingham, Alabama writes: "ACV only helps if your HBP is a result of eating too much protein???? Say it aint so, but info I found on another website (pasted below) suggests this......

http://www.health911.com/remedies/rem_bloodpr.htm

"Apple cider vinegar If the cause of your high blood pressure stems from eating too much protein with too little acid taken with it, two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water will drop the pressure from 20 to 40 points in half an hour. The protein in your diet creates alkalinity in your blood and causes it to be thicker. More pressure is required to push the thickened blood through the capillaries, so there may well be an increase in blood pressure. The acid in the vinegar thins the blood and therefore makes it easier for the heart to pump it through the body."

06/20/2009: Michelle (mlhenry7@yahoo.com) from Springfield, Missouri replies: "This goes against all the research I have been doing. We want our blood to be alkaline and protein is acidic. Also most acidic things become alkaline in our bodies. Grapefruit, lemons, ACV and so on help our bodies to be more alkaline. So taking ACV aids in digestion and helps our pH which helps blood pressure. Maybe the article just got some words mixed up. It is interesting to know if it only has to do with protein though."

Well I'm convinced that it works well on blood pressure. I don't care what other blogs say (mostly medical websites) regarding inconclusive evidence. Apple cider vinegar has worked better than the Norvasc I have been on for (4) years. My bp was averaging 140 - 160 over 91 - 97.

Since I began a regiment of simply taking a 16.9oz bottle of water and drinking about 1/3 of it. Then refilling the 1/3 with apple cider vinegar (From Stater Bros) not the distilled but the 64oz plastic jug. It has a picture of vegetables just above the size of the bottle. To end all of the hype regarding it being too acidic the Stater Bros brand states on the bottle "Reduce with water to 5% acidity." By the way experts that's less than a soda beverage. The light warming sensation you feel is similar to drinking wine.

By the way since I mix it in my water bottle (1/3) the acidity is reduced even less. If you stay with it for a week you will see results. I use to suffer from Hyperglycemia as well but the sugar content in the apple cider vinegar kept me from getting the shakes. I was even able to fast for three days with no issues. I drank 1/3 of the 16.9 water and apple cider vinegar buring the course of my day. Each time I drank 1/3 I followed up with drinking another 16.9oz of plain water.

I spread out my 1/3 as follows:
1/3 in the morning, 1/3 at lunch, and 1/3 prior to dinner. You will urinate a lot and your colon will be cleansed as well. I'm no expert in anyway but I know that it it worked for me. Don't worry I didn't forget to tell you my current bp. Well I am happy to report that it ranges from 114 over 77 to 106 over 64.

By the way it doesn't have the "mother" in it as well which some sites and vendors claim is the only kind that is effective. Just don't use the distilled white vinegar as it has been stripped of it's nutrients the same as white flour, white rice or white sugar. During my fast I substitued my breakfast, lunch and dinner with 16.9oz of water mixed with spirullina for three days. I lost 13 pounds and I walked 1 mile a day.

To all of you doubters that would say it was the exercise and walking that lowered my blood pressure it helped. However, I was doing 3 miles a day on the treadmill for 30 minutes and drinking water and the blood pressure drop was minimal. In addition, my cravings for sweets went away as the colon was cleaned and the candida died off during the fast. Lastly, but firstly I paryed to God during my fast for my own personal strength. Now if you want to tell Him it doesn't work then I leave that up to you. be blessed and stick with it and you will see results."

[QUESTION]  02/16/2009: Laura Oliver from Birmingham, AL writes: "Need to dilute ACV for HBP? Do I have to dilute the Apple Cider Vinegar in water? Can I just gulp down the 2TBS of apple cider vinegar and then chase it with 8oz water? It seems I read somewhere that to get the full benefit you have to dilute it. I think I read that full strength ACV is not effective. Any and all feedback appreciated."

02/16/2009: Dean from Los Angeles, CA replies: "Well I have done it both ways, I have not noticed a difference but it is a little hard to take with out water!"
