Bladder Infection (UTI) Remedies
"A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection that affects any part of the urinary tract. Although urine contains a variety of fluids, salts, and waste products, it usually does not have bacteria in it.[1] When bacteria get into the bladder or kidney and multiply in the urine, they cause a UTI. The most common type of UTI is a bladder infection which is also often called cystitis. Another kind of UTI is a kidney infection, known as pyelonephritis, and is much more serious. Although they cause discomfort, urinary tract infections can usually be quickly and easily treated when the patient sees a doctor promptly.
[...]
As an at-home treatment, increased water-intake, frequent voiding, the avoidance of sugars and sugary foods, drinking unsweetened cranberry juice, as well as taking vitamin C with the last meal of the day can shorten the time duration of the infection. Sugars and alcohol can feed the bacteria causing the infection, and worsen pain and other symptoms. Vitamin C at night raises the acidity of the urine, which retards the growth of bacteria in the urinary tract. However, if pain is in the back region (suggesting kidney infection) or if pain persists, if there is fever, or if blood is present in the urine, doctor care is recommended." (Wikipedia)

TED'S REMEDIES
03/23/2005: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "There are other herbal preparations that can be helped with UTI and they are taken usually 4 times a day:
1. Uva Ursi. Has antimicrobial and research has support its traditional use, usually 1-2 teaspoon of the herb.
2. Goldenseal Root. Also long known as a strong antibacterial agent to be used as tea or 1 teaspoon of dried herb in a cup of water.
3. Althea officianalis, used as cold infusion soaked in cold water and drink.
4. Galium aparine (cleavers) Has long history of use and taken with tea.
5. Zea Mays (Corn silk). Diuretic.
6. Buchu - Diuretic and antiseptic properties.
7. Equisetum arvense (Horsetail) - Diuretic, astringent and healing properties."
05/09/2009: Rob from Justice, IL replies: "Ted, i have a uti infection that started with lower back pain, burning sensation when urinating etc....i went to the doctor to have my prostate checked and it was fine---he prescribed antibiotics. it is still lingering and has settled in my testicle area(they are red),along with the head of my penis. i have used the oil of oregano in pill form with no cure. any suggestions???? i drink a ton of water, eat healthy, and get plenty of rest. i don't want to go back on antibiotics......"
05/12/2009: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "The best UTI remedy so far the simplest and is the fastest is the sea salt remedy. The dose is 1 teaspoon of sea salt dissolved in a full glass of water, plus drinking the cranberry juice or mannose powder roughly 2 teaspoons x 5 a day will usually do it. The sea salt remedy is taken only one dose and there's no need to take an additional dose. The bacteria causing the UTI appears to have a weakness to salt. In fact drinking too much water reduces the salinity of the urine which encourages the UTI. Therefore addition of sea salt one dose should see a relief in pain within a matter of minutes. The maintenance dose thereafter is only 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon per ONE LITER of drinking water. This is the most effective remedy I have found so far.
Ted"
02/10/2011: Sophie from Montreal, Quebec replies: "I used to suffer from bladder infections regularly twice a year. I tried everything, alka seltzer, d-mannose, ACV, cranberries, you name it, until I discovered Olive Leaf Extract capsules. It cured my infection and I have never had another one since, because at the first sign, I take a capsule and it is over."
05/08/2011: Pasha from Durham, Ontario, Canada replies: "This is on the right track.... I battled with UTI's for years till I discovered herbal infusions. Don't be intimidated, it's really not that complicated. Before you start, if you are suffering, go right now and take a big ol' dose of vitamin C... We're talking 3000 mg... Unsweetened is best (with a BIG glass of water or two). In 10 minutes, you may have no pain. You are not cured, but you get a break, to go make a cure! The pain will be back, and when it comes, more vitamin C and as much water as you can stand.
Okay, now we will make an herbal brew! Any natural food store should have bulk herbs. Forget the pills and capsules, even cranberry is pretty useless. You'll need nettle leaf, uva ursi, yarrow, marshmallow root, perhaps a wee bit of goldenseal (you can add many more medicinal herbs for UTI's, try doing a web search) and licorice root to sweeten it up (note: Very sweet! ). Now get 2 quart or liter sized jars that are safe to add boiling water to, such as mason jars (always add boiling water slowly and cautiously, as a quick temperature change can make glass crack) or if desperate, a big metal thermos. Heap in the herbs... A healthy sized HANDFUL of light, fluffy type herbs like the nettle, do not think in tea-bag size terms! Toss in less of the medium dense herbs like the uva ursi leaves, maybe a golf ball sized amount (note: uva ursi is very bitter... But important, add what you can handle cuz' it won't help if you can't drink it). Then only a tablespoon of rooty bits, such as the marshmallow root, and just a tsp of goldenseal if it is powdered. Fill to the top with boiling water and tightly cap. Let it sit for anywhere from 1/2 an hour to half a day, the longer the stronger. A good indicator of successful steeping progress is when the herbs get so saturated they sink to the bottom of the jar. Now strain and sip at as much tea as you can muster for about three days. Keep a supply on hand by alternating jars.
This is the real deal. I think I actually strengthened my system with this, as I got UTI's every few years instead of every few months after treating the infections this way for awhile.
Much compassion and empowerment to you!"

[YEA] 09/20/2006: Jennifer from Fort Smith, AR writes: "At the first sign of a bladder infection I take a couple Acidophilis pills and drink lots of water. This really helps. It also helps to take Acidophilis when your taking your Dr prescribed antibiotics because sometimes when the bad bacteria is killed so is the good resulting in a yeast infection and the Acidophilis stops that from occuring! I like it best in pill form but it can be bought in milk and it is naturally in yogurt."
Replies11/04/2008: Jessica from St. Louis, MO U.S.A. replies: "Actually, if you take acidophilus while on antibiotics, the antibiotics will kill the bacteria in the supplement you are taking and you just wasted your money. It's best to wait one week after you end your prescribed antibiotics to begin a pro-biotic.Three drops of oil of oregano (a natural anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal) from a tincture three to four times a day and 1200 mg of cranberry (which keeps the infection from spreading) in the morning and no-sugar-added cranberry juice at night will help."
01/20/2009: Sarah from Portland, OR replies: "Actually it is good to take acidophilus when taking antibiotics. just be sure to take the acidophilus 2 - 3 hours after taking the antibiotic because yes the antibiotic will kill the aciophilus if taken at the same time. waiting 2-3 hours after will replenish the good bacteria in your system that the antibiotics kill as well as the bad bacteria. Doing this will speed healing time. It is also good to continue the acidophilus a few days after ending the antibiotics."
03/08/2009: Tiffany from Los Angeles, CA replies: "No holistic treatment of a bacterial infection is complete without probiotics. Using a natural antibiotic can kill the bacteria causing the symptoms, but without repopulating the body with it's greatest natural defenders, probiotics, you haven't healed the underlying problem of bacterial imbalance (too many pathogenic colonies, not enough beneficial ones).
It is in fact a good idea to take probiotics concurrently with antibiotics. Doing so has been shown in clinical studies to reduce the incidence of negative side effects, such as diarrhea. I would continue probiotic treatment for at least two weeks after antibiotics, as your beneficial bacteria are 70% of your immune system and absolutely essential to your body's ability to digest food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste. If you are having any symptoms of indigestion (gas, bloating, belching, constipation, diarrhea), probiotics are in order.
Like most things, not all probiotics are created equal. While acidophilus is very aggressive toward pathogens, a multi-strain probiotic will provide even more benefit. Your body is home to innumerable strains of bacteria. Also, a symbiotic, or a supplement in which the probiotics are still attached in an organic bond with the medium (food) they have cultured, will provide the most benefit as these bacteria are stabilized by that organic bond and have easy access to all the fiber they need in order to colonize successfully. These are available in ultra-potent yogurt-like drinks (sold as a supplement) and also pill form. Feel free to email me if you are interested in specific products which fit into this category.
Be good to your bugs!"
07/02/2009: Steve from Wales, UK replies: "Hello: I am trying to contact the member Tiffany from LA regarding which probiotic she finds help her most. Thanks, Steve"
08/12/2009: Erin from Naperville, Illinois replies: "Actually, Sarah is right. You should take acidophilus while taking an antibiotic either in the form of yogurt or a probiotic. While the antibiotic does kill good and bad bacteria, you need to keep replenishing your good bacteria to prevent getting a secondary infection. With no good bacteria whatsoever in your system, you are wide open to any infection. Whenever I take an antibiotic, I always have to take a cup of yogurt daily with it or I will end up another, often worse, infection somewhere else."
09/13/2009: Romona from Olivet, Michigan replies: "Tiffany form Los Angeles, CA said that we could email her for an answer to what her probiotics are but I can't find her email address. Please have her contact me. Thanks, Romona"
[YEA] 01/19/2011: Jaclyn from Clarkston, Michigan replies: "Worked amazingly. Well into bladder infection, because I was trying cranberry pills and ACV. I added oil of oregano, and it started to ease up, but definitely still there. I got Acidophilus and Garlic and started taking those, and my bladder infection is GONE."
01/26/2012: Shampoo from Los Angeles, Ca replies: "Acidophilus is the ONLY thing that works to PREVENT and treat UTI's. Ever since I gave birth to my daughter I get a bladder infection EVERYTIME I have sex, it was horrible. To top it off, I dont have insurance, and it would usually take more than one round of antibiotics to clear one up.One winter, I was on my 4th round of antibiotics when I got on earthclinic to try to find an alternative cure. I tried ACV, EVCO, baking soda, sea salt, Olive leaf extract, and Oregano oil. None if it worked. It eased the pain, but did not clear things up for me. I also took Uva Ursi, and D-Mannose. The infection lingered. I still had painful pee, and sex! I drank ACV by the bottle, it was disgusting, but I was desperate!! I drank that and took coconut oil like it was my job.
Because, I am also prone to yeast infections, I tried several different kinds of Acidophilus, and I noticed a real improvement, but what cured me was an expensive brand specially formulated for women(can say names) with several different strands of acidophilus. There is a website, you guys can look it up. It was created and formulated over clinically trials, and 10 years of research and study, its great. It is expensive but SOOOOO WORTH IT! Its about $30 for 60 caplets. A month supply. I order it every month or every other month, its great. To prevent UTI's all you need is one pill a day. To treat a UTI, you will need 2 or more pills a day, and it may take up to a week to clear it out along with alot of water. These pills saved my life guys. Also, massive amounts of Goldenseal herb and Echinacea also helped me, but it was a pain! Who wants to take a dozen caps a day, Boring!!!"
[YEA] 01/31/2012: Madiney from Portland, Or replies: "I started getting a bladder infection every month. I got on antibotic and it came back. I then cured it naturally and sure enough a month later it came back. I tried to take it out again naturally but nothing worked. I was ready to get back on antibodics and a friend gave me a box of suppositories yeast arrest. It worked in 15 minutes and has changed my life along with acidophilus. I take 2 a day for maintenance and my life is changed."
02/09/2012: Dede from Idaho Falls, Id replies: "I have been trying to find the website for the acidophilus that Shampoo from LA uses. Can you give us a better clue? Nothing comes up."
02/10/2012: Marina from Chicago, Il replies: "I am responding to a general thread on bladder infections and uti- to say that we keep coconut oil ovules made with a drop of lavender essential oil in our women's health care clinic, and they seem to knock out bladder infections - best to address at the earliest symptom, which is generally a slight burning upon urination. Taking a few glassfuls of water to which 1 t. of cranberry concentrate (unsweetened) is added is also a helpful adjunct to this treatment- along with rest!"

[WARNING!] 04/08/2010: Erin from Tuttle, Ok, Usa writes: "I have suffered from recurring UTI's and kidney infections my whole life. I do all the right things, but my anatomy lends itself to frequent infections. I have been prescribed C***o in the past, a very harsh antibiotic that's given to anthrax patients, many times and was just fed up with having to take so many expensive pills. I got a UTI two weeks ago and decided to try some of the cures on this site. I will admit, Alka Seltzer (taken as directed) almost immediately got rid of my urinary pain. However, 3 days later I was in the emergency room with severe lower back pain, fever, and fatigue. The UTI had traveled to my kidneys. I was "forced" to get a shot of an antibiotic and take a round of antibiotics to get rid of the infection. I am currently doing a detox to remove the toxins from my system, but I just wanted people to know that the Alka Seltzer may make it easier to urinate, but it will not cure the infection."

So through Gods mercy and wisdom. Tried something and it truly relieves, maybe it could help. Try cran apple juice no added sugars, and aloe juice. I found tht as my system got worse too much acidity made it worse. So the aloe juice may create a balance of acidity to the cran juice. Hope it helps. 12/01/2009: Michele from Spring Grove, Pa - Usa writes: "YEA!!!!! I haven't had a bladder infection for years, but got hit with one tonight - of course, after all the drugstores locally were closed . I immediately came to this site as it has been very helpful for other things. First tried the ACV, but the pain was getting worse, along with shakes and chills. Frequent urination with little result and increasing pain finally got me to go wake my husband up and send him to an all night gas station/store for Alka-Seltzer.
By the time he got back, I was nearly on the floor with the pain - and I have a very high pain tolerance. Took 2 tablets in water and then took a hot - steaming hot - shower. By the time I got out of the shower the pain had subsided and I was able to urinate a more normal amount. Took another dose about 2 hours after the first and am also drinking cranberry juice and my normal mix of ACV and honey.
I am absolutely AMAZED at how quickly the Alka Seltzer worked. I'm sending this site link and the info to everyone I know. Thank you so much!!!"
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 12/04/2009: Michele from Spring Grove, Pa replies: "Adding to my previous post of 12/01/2009:
Alka-seltzer worked great at relieving the pain and immediate symptoms. However, I want to note very clearly it did nothing for the underlying infection. Continued use of it was actually masking the symptoms while the infection was getting worse.
Today, realizing I was not getting better, I went to my Doctor and ended up on antibiotics.
The Alka-seltzer is GREAT to get you through the night (or day) until you can get to a Doctor - but it will not cure an actual infection. Using it for more than a day or two could actually make things worse.
I'm still glad I used it though - I could not have gotten through the night with the pain I was in and I could go to my Doctor rather than the ER."
12/12/2009: Jerry from Frederick, Md replies: "If you read the ingredients on Alka Seltzer, you can save yourself a lot of wampum. The two active ingredients are aspirin and bicarbonate of soda."
[YEA] 09/22/2011: Chris from Oakland, Ca replies: "I have had a recurring bladder infection for a couple of months, but yesterday after it struck back with a vengeance I got desperate. I got no sleep last night, up at least a hundred of painful times, and could not even get to the bathroom in time so I had to start walking with a towel shoved between my legs. YUCK! This morning I found this thread, and while the person's story about kidney infection is scary, I immediately took two Alka Seltzers, got into a warm bath, and by the *time I got out* I was peeing normally. I'll go to the doc. But I'm amazed. How can it possibly work that fast??"
01/21/2012: Nonie from Toronto, Ontario, Canada replies: "After years suffering with UTIs that have crippled me with pain I have realized how to treat them AND to understand what helps and why.Alka-seltzer was the first remedy that helped me. My bladder infections cause me to bloat so parents and doctors thought it was gas. Alkaseltzer every day and the pain was gone. It turns out that this is because it changes the acidity of the urine. It alkalinizes it, as does bicarbonate (baking soda), for a period of time after taking it. This helps with pain but it will not cure the underlying infection unless the pain is due to overly acidic urine, and not a true infection. Alkaline urine can actually assist an infection in spreading.
Cranberry juice does the exact opposite. It renders the urine more acidic. This does not help with pain for me at all, but it ensures that bacteria can't grow and hence it's more of a long term approch. But it must be pure, unsweetened cranberry juice or pills, and no apple or other sugary juice in it. Sugar feeds any infection in the body. I prefer the pills if I take it, but I prefer other methods that I feel work better.
Probiotics ensure the body has the proper intestinal and urinary and reproductive bacteria and is a great preventative. The best is bio K, after that I like the pearl brand - extra strength.
Instead of salt, I use miso. It's naturally salty and also loaded with probiotics and minerals because it's fermented. You add it to hot, not boiling water and drink as a broth. It's tasty and better for you than commercial yogurt, some of which is pasturized after they add the probiotics, and most of which has sugar added.
Regarding recurring infections, there are triggers I have found in myself and don't know if they apply to others. Sexual activity, sugar, orange or citrus juice - even fresh pressed, dehydration, and coffee or tea or any caffeinated drink. The reason caffeine brings it on is that it dehydrates the body and you have to drink so much more water to compensate.
Lastly, antibiotics NEVER work for me to clear it completely. They are garbage, in my opinion. I use colloidal silver as an antibiotic, and it works better. But I use it for at least three weeks when I get it. The reason people get them in repeatedly in a short time frame, as in my case, is sometimes because the infection is not actually gone. It can be low grade and they don't pick it up on their tests at the doctor's office but in a week you have a bonafide infection again. I am sure I had low grade infections for years. Here's what helped:
Tincture of marshmallow root, uva-ursi, and goldenseal or drink marshmallow root or slippery elm powder and take goldenseal tincture. I do this as needed throughout the day when I have any signs of infection, even just the urgency. An epsom salt hot hot bath with a drink of bicarbonate in water for pain management. Colloidal silver for a full blown infection, with the above. I can't touch citrus juice or caffinated dinks if I have any sign of infection, and I have to drink 12 glasses of water a day. I always use probiotics and take miso regularly. I take zinc supplements (picolinate works best for me) daily, and I do not use any soap but Dr. Bonner's liquid soap diluted. Oil of oregano did not work for me, but olive leaf at the same time as colloidal silver helps. I also drink pau d'arco tea at night on a regular basis, which is an antifungal and will really help if yeast is involved.
Vitamin C did nothing noticable either way, but I take 3000mg night and day for other purposes. I do not know if it helps.
The herbs and natural remedies can be gotten at health food stores. There are no exact amounts to use... I just take what I think and if that doesn't work, try a bit more. As with any med, the dose has to be in the therapeutic range to work. This is my cumulated knowledge after 20 years suffering and then studying holistic nutrition. Hope it helps someone!"

I was prescribed this treatment as 3 cups per day of pure cranberry juice by a VA doctor after trying every antibiotic available and it worked for a chronic urinary tract infection when nothing else did. It cleared the infection in about one week for me....Oscar"
07/07/2011: Bess from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Hi Barbara - Here's some information on using D-mannose for bladder or kidney infections. It's by alternative health expert Dr. Jonathan Wright. You can get D-mannose at most health food stores - I'm sure they can order it in if it isn't in stock.http://tahomaclinicblog.com/d-mannose-for-bladder-and-kidney-infections/
Here's an excerpt:
D-mannose is very safe, even for long term use, although most women (or the very occasional man) with single episodes of bladder or urinary tract infection will only need it for a few days at most. Although D-mannose is a simple sugar, very little of it is metabolized. It doesn't interfere with blood sugar regulation, even for diabetics. It creates no disruption or imbalance in normal body microflora. It's safe even for pregnant women and very small children. If you read the comments after the article, you'll find how it's helped people. Cheers, Bess"

07/07/2011: D From Canada from Waterloo, On, Canada replies: "I have the same problem!I really don't know what to do anymore. Last year I was 7 times on antibiotics for UTI and this year 5 times already. I did do all medical tests, all is perfect. I had a procedure-a camera into my uretra-ouch, and that doctor told me I am unlucky. I will not see him again.
Cranberry did not help, d-manose did not help, goldenseal did not help, teas with uva-ursi and marshmallow root, not helping. I have to refill my antibiotics because if I have a little discomfort when I pee and I still hope that is only my imagination, in hour time I have blood in my urine. I am very clean. Tried ACV with baking soda, and I vomit 10minutes later. ACV is OK by itself for me. If Ted(btw, I am on this website for two years already to try to cure this UTI and I see that are lots of wonderfull people with knowledge and willing to share ) or anyone else who has an advise please do share. My doctor put me on Premarin-estrogen) thinking that maybe I am dry and iritated. I inserted two doses of cream and after reading how this medication comes to us I decided to stop. My diet is mostly veg. And fruits, very seldom fish. No dairy! Thank you"
07/07/2011: Gavin from Manganui, Northland, New Zealand replies: "With regards to bladders. Dont forget they need zinc, far more than any other area of the body, that includes the reproductive system as well.. You can take all the herbal wonders in the world but if the essential elements are not in the body, they will just be builders waiting for the cement to arrive."
07/08/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "I used to have bladder infections a few years ago but not anymore. I did several things, I started drinking more water because I noticed that if it was very hot and I didn't drink enough I would get one. I also started peeing and washing myself after intercourse, I do it every time now. And using lube..... When I did a kidney and bladder scan to see if I had any problem, which I didn't, the doctor told me to wash myself with a French soap called Savon de Marseille which I have been doing ever since. No idea what helped exactly, maybe several things? By the way, I eat normally, fish, meat, eggs, everything except milk which I don't like! I hope this advice helps you because bladder infections are awful! And the antibiotics are awful too! By the way, peeing at regular intervals helps too, don't keep the urine inside! The cranberry pills or juice never helped me but I do take quite a bit of Vitamin C."
07/08/2011: D From Canada from Waterloo, Canada replies: "Thank you, Francisca, for your advise. You are very nice! I am doing the lube, pee and wash every time. Somehow I can not get rid of this bacteria. The last urine test did show lots of white cells (infections) but no growth on the culture. I will stop having fruits for breakfast for a while to see if I feel a change. Maybe the sugar from fruits is the culprit. And, OMG, I loved my breakfast- juiced all king of berries with hemp/chia/flex seed, milk thistle, clorela, kelp, and a pinch of clove powder.
I will replace the fruits with vegetables to see.... I do not take vit C. Should I? I take: multivitamin, asthaxantin, D3, q10, b12, probiotic and baby aspirin 1/day. I need to find the source of keeping this bacteria still alive.
Thanks again"
07/08/2011: Ti from Houston, Usa replies: "Some things that helped solve my bladder infection and which may help you are:- Cranberry capsules
- Garlic (raw or from olive bar) 3-4 times dily 4-5 cloves each time
- 2 Tb ACV in 8 Ounces warm water 3 tie daily (away from meals)
- Good quality probiotics daily
- Yoghurt with active cultures
Changing underwear 3 times daily."
07/10/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Hi D, I stopped having bladder infections before I started on the Vitamin C, so I can't tell you whether it helps but it won't hurt as Vitamin C is a very important supplement! Nowadays if I get any it is once a year and I cure it with either a lot of water or else, if that doesn't help, three days of antibiotics, not the ten days they usually recommend here (this lower dose was recommended to me by a doctor). Filling yourself with antibiotics will only make things worse. I don't know your age but with me the lube really helped as I started noticing that I never had any bladder infections if I wasn't in a relationship, so it had to be related. I think vaginal dryness also causes them. And washing myself with a very neutral soap, the recommended one being Savon de Marseille but that is a very French thing, you might not be able to find it. Usually you are told not to use soap but well, that was recommended to me by the doctor who did the kidney, bladder scan. He also suggested that the infections might be caused by the soap I used to wash my underwear which changed when I came to live in France but I don't believe that because I had had one years earlier in Holland, where I had lived for a number of years already and one in the USA where I didn't live and was just visiting for a short while, so washed no clothes. You have to try everything and find what works for you! "

I took magnesium and zinc, tried to drink sea salt in water (didn't make it too far, since burning pee is bad enough w/o drinking an emetic), and then took the alka seltzer. So, it could've been a combination of these remedies, but as soon as I took the alka seltzer it was GONE. Woo-hoo! Just thought it needed more emphasis as a possible remedy, it's something you might have around the house (b/c these things always seem to hit at night! Why is that?!), and it won't hurt anything to give it a try, as compared to trying to drink salt water or ACV, either of which to me are worse than the infection. Oh, and I just remembered I also drank some lemon juice in water last night, so maybe that helped some too. Hope this helps somebody!"

[YEA] 04/09/2008: Jess from Riverside, NJ writes: "I've had a reoccuring bladder "infection" for a month. My tests came out negative for an infection and show to be yeast related. I suffer from chronic candidiasis with systemic symptoms. My pain is fine during the day but in my sleep my body goes acidic very quickly and I painfully wake at least 2x per night to pee. The things I find most helpful for pain releif are listed below...
Eat lots of Celery and cucumbers! Very alkaline, and helps releive pain w/in 20minutes. Drink lots of water to flush out your system. Eat all vegetables (be creative, yes asparagus helps too) with no meat proteins and use generous amounts of ACV along with EV olive oil or my choice, capryol (coconut oil). Oil of oregano helps a bit if you can stomach the awful taste. Oh yeah, NO SUGAR, carbs, or Dairy. Get unsweetend cranberry juice concentrate & mix a small amount with a glass of water, not the store brand juice.
Try replacing milk with Almond milk and a tiny bit of Stevia sweetener with some cinnammon...mmm.
Alkaline diets will help with the pain and if your problem is related to yeast, it helps prevent an overgrowth of the fungus. There are plenty of websites with lists of alkaline/acidic foods. Check em out.
Hope this helps!"
Replies10/31/2008: Aimee from New Brunswick, NJ replies: "I am very curious after reading your comment. I have suffered from chronic (and I mean chronic) bladder infections for nearly 8 years. They totally control my life. My "infections" are not always infections as years of tests have often shown negative results. I drink more water than anybody I have ever met, I am religiously hygenic when it comes to intimacy, I wear loose clothes, etc. but I still get a bladder infection or at least all the symptoms about once a week. It's awful. My symptoms are tied to stress; if I cry or clean the house or sweat or stand up too long or don't get enough sleep, I am sick within hours and I have to sit with an ice pack between my legs, drink tons of water and wait it out. I have been prescribed seriously strong antibiotics for this condition, which I have recently stopped taking due to horrific adverse reactions. I took them for years though (sometimes they helped, sometimes no) I also have a related condition called vuluvadynia, which is an irritation of the skin and nerves in the vaginal area. I have no STD's, have been to many specialists and participated in university hospital studies. They told me I have a pelvic floor disorder.
I am 29 years old and beside myself with grief and frustration in dealing with this problem. I currently live in Mexico and it is difficult for me to find many of the remedies listed here, although I have been experimenting with some herbs. I know this site is to discuss treatment, but if you or anyone reading this could help or point me in the right direction, I would be sinserely and enormously grateful."
02/02/2009: Whinny from Cache Creek, B.C., Canada replies: "Reply to 10/31/2008: Aimee from New Brunswick, NJ .... you said: They told me I have a pelvic floor disorder... vulva soreness, etc.
My reply - any chance your bladder and/or uterus have prolapsed? with prolapsed bladder you can get much irritation of vulva and labia. as one or both push down, especially when the bladder is close to pushing it's way out of you, or has pushed out, you can get very sore, raw, and achy.
'Things' rubbing on your clothes and the extra pressure, in general, can change the blood flow and put pressure on the nerves all around your genital area.
I hope you get this as your post was several months ago. The type of doctor you want to see is a gynaecologist. A good one. you can read about these problems on the web. the more information and awareness you have of your body, the easier it is for them to find what is wrong. you should be examined while you are standing and pushing, like you were lifting something, as this problem can go on for many years before it is detected if all they do is give you an interal exam while lying down and asking you to cough. GOOD LUCK."
04/14/2009: Cynthia from Kitchener, ON replies: "To reoccurring bladder infection sufferer:
All your symptoms seem to be related to candidiasis...the crappiest thing on earth to have, but often, reoccurring bladder infections, skin rashes, extreme fatigue, moodiness... all can be related to this condition. Go on a strict diet for 2 weeks and see if your symptoms are allieviated. There are two amazing books you should read, which I can't put on here because no brand names. But if you google CANDIDIASIS, you will find which ones I'm talking about...
Good luck!"
05/12/2009: Been There from Kerrville, Texas replies: "To Aimee of New Brunswick: I have found personally that hormones, specifically low progesterone, can mimic bladder, yeast or any pain or tenderness of the female organs. The doctor never tested for it, a nutritionist told me about it. Finally, a female doctor well versed in naturopathic medicines wrote me a prescription to have a high dosage compounded. It is particularly common when you are under stress, or your body thinks you are. The precursers for the stress hormone are the same precursers for the progesterone, so when stress goes up, your body essentially "robs Peter to pay Paul", as the saying goes. You can try the stuff at the health food store and put in directly on the offending area. I hope you have already solved your problem and don't need my advice."
08/10/2009: Connie from Manitowoc, Wisconsin replies: "I had the opportunity to try taking a progesterone pill some months ago. I felt fantastic the day I took it, but the next day or so I had terrible pain in the areas of my ovaries. I then took estrogen to counter it, mimicking a birth control pill, and the pain went away. I would love to be able to keep taking the progesterone. Maybe a lower dose would be better? Or is this just a bandaid for a larger issue? Any ideas?"
[YEA] 01/11/2011: Aimee from New Brunswick, Nj replies: "It has been a while, but I wanted to say thank you to all of the kind people who had responded to my post and to EarthClinic. I also thought that an update might be helpful for anyone else suffering from similar issues.I have been feeling much better and though I must devote some extra energy to keeping myself healthy, the relief is well worth it! Here's what has helped me so far:
ACV- This has been a life saver!! I couldn't find the organic where I live in Mexico, so I just got the regular kind and it still worked wonders. I add a couple tablespoons to a large bottle of water which I sip over several hours. During an acute attack, I would drink a more concentrated solution and continue to drink a lot of water. I say would drink because I seldom experience the severe kind of pain that I used to feel. I can say pretty confidently that ACV has been one of the most helpful things in combatting these issues.
Water- I try to drink about 3 liters a day.
Probiotics- I take a strong probiotic everyday- helps to keep the general area in order, limiting vulvadynia symptoms and also keeps me more regular.
Fiber- speaking of regular... This helps with my bladder and female issues. If I am ever constipated, pushing at all can cause problems down there. I try not to push.
Kegel exercises- I contract the muscles and hold for a few seconds. I do this pretty regularly, but also when I am in the midsts of pain or discomfort. It really does seem to help.
Loose clothing- I used to wear tight jeans, sometimes a thong... Not anymore! I wear lots of skirts or dresses, cotton underwear and I make sure to wear pants and leggings that don't have big seems right through the crotch.
Stress- I know that avoiding stress is difficult at times, but it is paramount to reducing the severity of my health problems. So, I just pay close attention to what my body is telling me. If I am cleaning and start to feel a bit of pressure or stinging, well guess what- its time to stop for the day or maybe I just need to move slower. Lower back strain can make things worse, so I will try to sit more frequently, bend with the knees, that sort of thing. And I only cry when it is really worth it now. I think about whether or not what I am crying over is worth the pain it will cause a short while after. Usually its not. I am not a robot and it may be strange to say I choose not to cry-- but when you cry or worry or panic, the body tenses up and puts pressure on those nether regions. Sometimes the onset of my symptoms was enough to start this chain reaction of worrying and stressing and honestly it made it all much worse. Thinking too much about my symptoms never helped. I do what I know has worked for me and then try to keep calm and distract myself.
Things I try to avoid: sugar, lots of bread, alcohol (I immediately feel stinging in my bladder), really spicy foods, strong chemicals (bleach is the worst for me), pollution, cigarette smoke, lack of sleep.
Ice- I have several ice packs- I wrap one in a hand towel and place it down there when I start to feel swolen or stinging. It's instant relief.
Intimacy-Anything that touches down there must be clean. No after the game, after a long day anything with my husband. And right after, I make sure to pee and then rinse everything off. Maybe it hinders spontanaeity, but not as much as several days of pain.
I hope this is helpful. It's my arsenal and I'm sure that everyone needs to find what is specifically helpful for them. I have gone from having weekly bouts of severe pain, sometimes for several days... To having a problem once every couple of months. The first hint of discomfort and I am combatting it with everything Ive got. I really feel for anyone experiencing ongoing discomfort or pain of any sort and I wish you much peace and relief."
01/12/2011: Kp from Hanover, Nh replies: "Aimee from New Brunswick : I had ALL of your symptoms for years. Finally a urologist diagnosed IC (Interstitial Cystitis)- google it;lots of info/suggestions there. However, in my case the root cause was wheat/gluten. I eliminated it COMPLETELY (even hidden sources like soy sauce) and my bladder completely healed. All my symptoms have been gone for years now."
[YEA] 07/10/2011: Erin from Tacoma, Wa replies: "Here's what I do when I get a bladder infection:Little to no sugar during treatment
Raw veggies/juice and a little fruit only
Unsweetened cranberry juice, sip throughout day
Every two to three hours, take:
one chopped clove garlic
one tsp coconut oil
2 Tbsp acv
If you are not used to lots of garlic, you might want to throw a gas-aid in there per instructions on the box because it can get pretty painful! Once I can wake up in the morning with no discomfort (usually day 2), I continue this regiment for another 24-48 hours to make sure there are no lingering bacteria.
Hope this helps!"

[NAY] 06/28/2009: Sy from Scottsdale, AZ writes: "Question - 3 different occasions (2 at my Dr. office and once at home)I took a test with test strips to determined a UTI and they all came back positive. My Dr. has recently had my urine cultured but it came back negative.
HISTORY*** May 12,09 I got a UTI, not diagnosed by a Dr. but by knowing what it feels like. So, I started with an over the counter cranberry med. that has worked for me in the past. After a couple of days the UTI felt better but it was obvious I still had it. I then added pure cranberry juice to the remedy but that did not change a thing. I read on this website to try apple cider vinegar, so I started with the pill form ( I can not drink it) again it felt better but still did not cure the UTI. I then went to my Dr. 7 Jun 09. That is when I was tested for the first time at the Dr. office and the test came back positive. The Dr. put me on a 7 day antibiotics at the end of the 7 days I still had the UTI. Thinking it was all in my mind, 2 days later I took an over-the-counter UTI test and it came back positive. I then made an appt with my Dr. once again, the Dr. took another UTI test and it came back positive and started my on a 10 day antibiotic. In the mean time the Dr. had my urine cultured and to our surprise it came back NEGATIVE. I am still having pain and AT A LOSS!! CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME?"

Turns out i had endometriosis over my bladder, quite severely. I went to the gyno for what i thought was an unrelated problem who sent me to an endometriosis specialist who did surgery and found that my bladder was covered. Endo on the bladder can cause symptoms that mimic bladder infection but you will get a negative culture. After the operation the problem went away although it can return as there is no cure for endometriosis. Just a suggestion on a possible cause."

11/22/2011: Linda from Okotoks, Ab Canada writes: "To whom it may concern; In desperation I began searching the internet tonight for natural cures for UTI's. I have a long frustrating story with bladder infections. Today after being on anti-biotics for a week, I still have an infection. Dr. doesn't know what to do? I still feel sick and want off this merry-go-round. I'm out of options. I have tried a natural way to cure myself and these now seem to be failing me. It has been a long, long year.
Please, please can Apple Cider Vinegar help and what is the protocol? It's a little confusing reading everyone's stories. Thanks Linda"
Replies11/22/2011: Bess from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Hi Linda - In the book Apple Cider Vinegar by the Bragg family (of the famous Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar brand), they recommend the following for bladder infections:Drink at least 8 glasses of pure water daily.
Drink the ACV "cocktail" which is 2 teaspoons of ACV in 8 ounces of pure water - you can add a little bit of raw honey or maple syrup but that's optional (if you're diabetic, use stevia). Drink this first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, one hour before lunch and one hour before dinner.
Drink marshmallow herbal tea - two or three times daily. (I would imagine you could get this at a health food store)
Add one cup of ACV to a daily warm sitz bath (a large basin or a few inches in a bath tub).
Hope this works for you! Bess"
11/22/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "Dear Linda, I have a friend who's daughter has always gotten very bad bladder infections throughout her life. She was on antibiotics pretty much every 3 weeks. She would take a 10 day course and within a week she would have another infection. I suggested she take her daughter to a naturopath to see if she had any food intolerances. It turns out she did. If she stays away from Gluten she doesn't get an infection at all. I think it's been over a year since her last infection now. There is some studies on why people get bladder infections when they are gluten intolerant and there is evidence that it effects the lining of the bladder which makes it easier to irritate. Alot of the reason why antibiotics won't work in this situation is because there is no actual "infection. " There is irritated bladder lining which will keep being irritated unless the antagonist is removed. So you should get a food allergy test and find out if this is the case or just test the theory out by removing gluten and see if it helps."
11/22/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Linda, it would be interesting to know your age because I think that my bladder infections came from dryness of the vagina. When my husband and I started using lube during intercourse the infections stopped. Also peeing afterwards and washing yourself helps. When I took antibiotics my doctor told me not to take the ten day cure, she said that 3 days were enough and that was true. And drinking enough water, that helps as well! I haven't had any for almost 18 months."

[YEA] 10/04/2011: Jennifer from Sunrise, Fl, Usa writes: "Another big YES for ACV as a urinary tract infection remedy. I get these all the time unfortunately, and not just little ones - really bad ones. I've urinated blood and had kidney infections from them before. The key to treating UTIs is to treat them FAST. If you think that you are getting one, treat it immediately - don't wait. The infection spreads fast and in a matter of hours, you can be in serious pain. You may notice that your UTI clears up after just one dose of ACV - but this is very important - DON'T STOP TAKING THE ACV - take it 3x per day, for one week - EVEN IF you feel no symptoms! Just like a UTI can come back if you stop taking antibiotics, it can come back if you stop taking the ACV, and with a vengeance. I keep a bottle of ACV with me at all times - I even bring a bottle with me overseas when I travel, and it has saved me through quite a few UTI episodes!
Please note that this remedy is only for mild UTIs. If you don't see an improvement in symptoms, or if you are urinating blood, have symptoms of a kidney infection, or are in serious pain - GO SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY. UTIs are very serious if left untreated - the infection can spread to your kidneys and cause permanent scarring. If you don't have health insurance, a lot of drugstores in the US (and even some Targets now) have health clinics that diagnose and treat urinary tract infections for under $100. A UTI clears up extremely quickly with the correct antibiotics."

[YEA] 09/20/2011: Rockgur14 from Candor, Ny United States writes: "I woke up a couple days ago with a terrible pain and realized immediately that I had a bladder infection. UTI's are seriously one of the worst and most uncomfortable sensations a person can have- very annoying! I am away at college and had no clue what to do (without a vehicle to drive to the doctors, mind you). I immediately panicked and looked up at-home remedies to find a quick solution. I have always known about unsweetend cranberry juice but that's about all I have heard. This is only my third UTI ever, so I don't really know a lot about what can help, treat, etc.
After frantically searching through some random websites, I came across Earth Clinic and... HALLELUJAH!! Probably one of the best things I've ever done. I noticed right away all of the users who vouch for ACV so I decided I would give it a shot. However, because of the no-car situation I am in, I had to wait for one of my roommates to come home so I could hitch a ride to the grocery store. In the meantime, I mixed up a solution of about 3 tbsps lemon juice and 8 oz. of water. I started feeling relief almost immediately. By the time I picked up some ACV, I already felt well enough to focus on things other than my UTI. I mixed up my own recipe of cranberry juice, lemon juice, ACV, and water that works absolute wonders.
Seriously... UTI's suck, and it is the worst feeling when you don't have the time/circumstances to rush to the doctors. If you feel one coming on, or if you've been suffering from one, just STOP! Drink some ACV and if you have it, lemon juice, and you will be returning to normal in no-time! I promise, this stuff is a MIRACLE!! It really works!! I still have a slight UTI but because I've only been drinking it for a day now I know I just need to give it some more time. Also, DRINK PLENTY OF WATER!! ACV works beautifully, but you need to be constantly flushing your bladder to fully rid yourself of the bacteria. Thank you so much for reading this, and thank you SO MUCH for all of the combined posts that recommend ACV! IT'S AMAZING!
Here's my recipe that works for me, hopefully it will work for you too!
2 tbsps Apple Cider Vinegar
2 or 3 tbsps 100% Lemon Juice
8 to 15 ounces of Water
**I also have tried the ACV and Lemon Juice with unsweetened cranberry juice. Just replace water with that. It makes it taste a little better!!
Good luck! :)"

It has so far worked twice for me. As a person who gets uti"s cronically, I am so happy to finally be rid of antibiotics for this ailment."

I feel like it has gotten rid of it, but still a little soon to know for sure. I was wondering if anyone can tell me why I am getting stomach burning after I drink it and also what are the benefits using this long term?"
Replies[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 05/25/2011: Tj from Palatine, Illinois, Us replies: "My stomach burns occasionally as well when I drink ACV. It's highly acidic so if need be I will take an antacid with it to balance myself out. Try it!"
05/25/2011: Randy from Jersey City, Nj, Usa replies: "don't use an antacid.... I don't think those are good for you, and might cause upset stomach.instead, mix the ACV with baking soda before ingesting. it will bubble up, which is the acid and alkaline mixing. after the bubbles have receded, ok to ingest"
11/03/2011: Johnna from Lawndale, Nc replies: "Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) should not be taken on an empty stomach as it can cause burning. Take it with food each time. This method is also an effective acid reflux/indigestion treatment for many. As far as long term benefits/issues, one should drink ACV with a straw to limit frequent acid contact on teeth. How to take: 1-3 Tsp ACV (unpasturized, unfiltered) to 1cup water. You may add 2-3 tsp honey (preferrably raw, unfiltered) to make it more palitable.
Drink 1 cup, through a straw, 3 times per day with food.
Honey dissolves much easier in warm, not hot, water Hot water over 130 degrees will kill the good enzymes which make this treatment effective. If you prefer cold drinks make a large batch and refrigerate after dissolving the honey."
01/05/2012: Bella B from Boardman, Ohio replies: "I usually get cystitis. Have been on a lot of antibiotics which now I seem immuned. After much reading, I am now staying away of acidy drinks, green tea, chocolate and especially wine. Also, even though I have no discharge bought a yeast kit. Within three days, burning was gone. STAY AWAY FROM ALL FRUIT JUICES."
