BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  12/05/2009: Dylan from Phoenix, Az, United States writes: "Hello all,

I just wanted to let you know that taking 2 oz. (or so) of Aloe Vera before meals really helps coat one's esophagus and throat. If you have esophagitis or Barrett's esophagus caused by GERD, this is for you.

Before Thanksgiving, my esophagus was getting worse by the day. My chest was sensitive to touch, and I was getting a tickling cough. After only a week of taking aloe vera gel, my cough is gone and the burning in my esophagus is going down. My chest still feels sensitive, but not like before.

I also think aloe vera helps acid reflux, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts on this or any other GERD/esophagitis treatment? Let me know at shub542@yahoo.com. Also, if anyone knows how to get FRESH aloe vera gel, PLEASE e-mail me as it would be very helpful."

Aloe has amaizing properties. I hope this is helpful."

If I have a symptom I find it works - and I add a tsp. of honey. Also, use a good digestive enzyme with first bite of food and a probiotic each day. Don't eat fatty foods and avoid wheat and dairy. Get adequate sleep and exercise a bit. These measures can be difficult but it's absolutely worth it. I don't have to take the worthless and dangerous meds and haven't had heartburn for months. (My doc says it's okay unless my bi-annual scope tests shows further damage -- which they haven't. )"

BETTER BUT NOT CURED

10/05/2006: Rebecca from Houston, TX writes: "You asked for information on people taking medication and its correlation to GERD. I have taken, for 20 years Excedrin to treat headaches and migraines. There have been other meds taken over the years as well, both RX and OTC. Approximately 5 years ago I was diagnosed with GERD after an "attack" so severe that I had to seek treatment at the ER. It took me until about 2 years ago to figure out that the meds are at least in part contributing to my condition. I am scared now because after a respite from the disease for a few years, GERD is back and in full attack mode. I walk around all day every day with a feeling like I have a peanut butter sandwich STUCK in my throat. I feel stuff backing up in my throat. Faltering voice, sore throat, hoarseness, etc. etc. I am SUPER intrigued about the ACV and hopefully will be trying to purchase some either tomorrow or over the weekend. My insurance company is not allowing Nexium, which my doctor has prescribed; the insurance company will allow Previcid, but even with insurance consideration I fear that I will not be able to afford it. The only concern I have is the repeated comments I see on other web sites stating that individuals should not self treat or attempt to self treat GERD. I am at risk for Barrett's syndrome (or whatever it is called). Does anyone have a comment on the preceding paragraph concerning self treatment, or can anyone offer advice? Thank you and GOD BLESS!"

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Rebecca: Just take ACV 1 tablespoon plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. There is a difference between treating oneself and just making changes in eating certain dietary supplements.

Often most diseases are simply an issue that the body is due to pathogens, vitamin and mineral imbalances, or pH imbalances. I make sure whenever I get sick from an unknown causes, I must correct all the imbalances.

Mineral imbalances can be corrected by just taking 1/4 teaspoon of dead sea salts or any good sea sea salt to on liter of water as a normal drinking water. Sea salt is unusual in that it has trace minerals that is not found in our food. So this is why they are so important. Maybe drinking more of this (as they done a century ago) can help with a great many conditions.

Sometimes buffer is the issue. Then take ACV but with sufficient buffers. Often for adult dosages ACV 1 tablespoon plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to 1/2 glass of warm water, taken twice a day, one in the morning and once in evening on empty stomach should help correc the buffer imbalances.

Pathogens are the cause of lowered immunity and as a result, taking licorice extract, glycine, selenium, garlic, zinc acetate (50 mg/day), magnesium chloride, 250 mg/day and some good electrolyte salts packs they sell in drugs store (sometimes called hydration salts)will correct the potassium and sodium imbalances.

The most important nutritional imbalances I have found associated with GERDS or Barrett's Symptoms is an imbalances or deficiency in vitamin B complex. So taking vitamin B complex, where B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B8 at 100 mg. each, except for B12 at 100 mcg, for example taken 3 times a day is often seem quite helpful. All these are just an attempt to correct nutritional imbalances. Additional Bs can be taken from Brewer's Yeast (B13) and royal jelly (high in B5).

Barrett's Symptoms seem to be more in line with supplement more on selenium, zinc, garlic, magnesium, B5, B8, and silicon (from oatmeals) then most GERDS and have more to do with the rebuilding of cellular structure, electrolytic correction then most GERDS. The other issue is the importance of vitamin C, especially sodium ascorbate, about 250 mg./day. Most simple reflux are usually best handled just taking any kind of buffer solution where you take twice a day. Such as 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water once in morning and evening. It will correct most pH imbalances needed.

If parasites is the cause of the Barrett's symptom, then a simple 10 drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide with only 1/8 teaspoon of borax to 1/2 glass of water sipping slowly over about 30 minutes. If relief is not obtained within an hour or so, then parasites (or nanoparasites) is not the issue.

If you are doing the right thing, it won't take weeks, or months, or years to get to notice improvement. It takes only hours. SO just keep an eye to the ball and see what is making it worse, but especially what is making you better. The list that I prepared is where you should start as being a good candidates to get improved health, by dietary supplements of course, not a treatment of medical conditions. Correcting imbalances of course might make you feel better, but I have seen people get cured so often that sometimes imbalance may be at issue here. As an example, of someone being cured of acid reflux, I have to look no further than my own mother, who was cured after 3 days of my own intensive research to cure her. It was serious since she COULD NOT SWALLOW ANY FOOD FOR THREE STRAIGHT DAYS.

Even water she could not drink. By a stroke of luck, I have bought frozen royal jelly before, and being very rich in Vitamin B5, I gave her 1 teaspoon and within minutes I noticed an improvement. She was permanently cured from that one teaspoon and the acid reflux never came back. It was triggered when she ate sea food, so pathogen were the issue but somehow the B5 rich frozen royal jelly did the trick. My home might have B5, but at 100 mg. it was hardly enough.

I also have a friend who had acid reflux, but it was bought about from a medicine allergy. Again, back to the old drawing board, and she was cured within 30 minutes after taking magnesium chloride. For her condition it was a magnesium deficiency triggered by a drug allergy. Sometimes drug allergy will often trigger across the board vitamin B deficiency. This is why brewer's yeast is used, it also have B13, but you can't find that in drug stores! Neither will you get B17, which is found in apricot seeds. So changing your diets is not even treatment, it is changing your habits to get a broad spectrum of nutrition to achieve a balance, holistically anyway. I have another friend of mind, also from acid reflux and she lives in Cholburi, Thailand. I told her about sea salt, sodium thiosulfate (6-12 drops in one glass of water), and some fulvic acid. It was gone in one day. And to think, she spent years finding the cure! I guess she was looking at the wrong place. For her condition it was a simple mineral imbalance.

I can list all the acid reflux I have seen, but whatever the name, you may call it, it is either pathogens, mineral imbalances, vitamins, electrolytes, or the pH. Should correcting imbalances don't work then you should consider what "conventional medicine" calls treatment"

YEA

[YEA]  04/04/2011: James from Savannah, Ga Usa writes: "I cured my Barrett's. After 3 years of regular upper GI inspections, on my 4th I was declared free. It was during the 2nd year of my Barrett's that I followed this 'regimen'. Here it is:

EATING (behavior)

First and foremost, DO NOT EAT AFTER 5 AT THE VERY LATEST.

You are probably on some proton pump inhibitor. Although a good thing, it does a number of what I believe are contrary effects. By lowering your stomach acids, food takes much longer to digest. Thus, you can't expect your stomach to be clear of food for at least 6 hours. Secondly your stomach enzymes are now out of balance due to your lowered acidity. So your food isn't digested and absorbed fully either.

Keep all meals small.

You probably already know this. Large meals aggrivate hiatal hernias, GERD.

If you must eat a large meal, make it breakfast. And have it before you have coffee. And if possible, keep the coffee under 2 cups.

For the first 6 months of my regimen, I was in the strange habit of making large dinnerlike meals upon waking. I found it very soothing, and was of course very hungry! I made mild curries, stews, mild mexican dishes, and traditional breakfasts.

Never, ever have a large meal with alcohol.

Nothing against alcohol, as I will later disclose. But wine, beer along with an even medium size meal seems to 'shut down' the digestion. I was in misery many times from this one-two combo. If you must do both the same night, drink alcohol either a couple of hours before, or a couple of hours after the meal. I don't know why.

Cocktails seem to be easier on the system, in moderation. Less yeasty, filling.

Chew gum.

If you get that gnawing, hungry feeling that many HH and GERD sufferers get, I found chewing gum helped a lot. It gets the saliva flowing, and saliva seems to calm the stomach.

EATING (food)

You can eat hot food, but not very hot, and not too often.

I was addicted to super-spicy food. I love it. Learn to love the flavor of those spicy foods, not the 'intensity'.

Eat tons of Broccoli.

I ate broccoli in my stir fries, omlettes, mexican dishes, indian food, salads - whatever. I became addicted. If you hate broccoli, it's probably because you grew up in a household where it was cooked to an awful olive drab. Buy FRESH broccoli, and just steam or stir-fry until it is a richer deep green. Still crunchy, not mushy. I believe broccoli is a very, very powerful food.

Eat tons of Onions

Same as above. You can cook the hell out of the onions if you want. Put em in every cooked dish.

Same with Garlic

See above.

Avoid prepackaged meals/mixes/sauces

This stuff is industrial poison when taken in quantity. Use spices with tomato sauce,

ethnic sauces as a base. Yeah those sauces are prepackaged, but they're to be used lightly and 'doctored' with garlic, onions, spices.

Eat Yogurt.

Yogurt will make you fat if you eat too much. So every day, just have a cup of it. It's full of 'friendly' bacteria for your stomach. Just to supercharge the yogurt, I would take vanilla yogurt, and add a teastpoon of spirulina to it, mix it in. Spirulina is a powerful source of exotic and crucial nutrients, and smells like hell. But mixed in vanilla yogurt, trust me, it tastes downright good! I called this mix 'The secret weapon".

Quinoa

This stuff is great. It's a grain, you cook it like oatmeal. Add broccoli, garlic, onions and some boullion, (add Bragg's Amino's) you've got a great 'salty hot dish'

I know people who cook this up in the morning, add milk, honey and cinnamon, and they've got a sweet breakfast porridge.

Granny Smith Apples

I read somewhere online that eating even half of a GS Apple can reduce the gnawing HH symptoms. It often worked.

Sauerkraut

I know what you're saying. No. Way. Hear me out: I hated sauerkraut. I hated that mushy awful crap they put on hot dogs. I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

I happened onto some at a fancy restaurant, when I was presented with a salmon on a bed of sauerkraut.

It is great. It is also loaded with digestive enzymes and is a GREAT snack food when you are hungry. I urge you: Get some, try it cold. Try to find the unpasteurized kind if you can, like PowerKraut if you can find/afford it. I have the feeling this stuff is a healing food of the Gods, like Quinoa, Aloe, Broccoli, Papaya.

Avoid Sugar and Sweets

I'm lucky this way. I don't like sweets at all. But I thought I'd mention it because

it may have been instrumental in my recovery.

If you must eat out, just order an appetizer.

I know it's tempting to 'live it up'. Yeah, you'll have to live with it later. If you have to order an entree, try for the love of God to just eat a little and take the rest home. NIBBLE at the restaurant.

LIQUIDS

NO CARBONATED BEVERAGES!

I cannot emphasize this enough. I drank quarts of diet coke every day. The damn stuff expands in your stomach and creates the whole problem. Additionally you ingest Phosphoric Acid, burning away at your esophagus. Run like your hair is on fire from all cola products, and avoid carbonated as well.

The 'two tea" combo

Every morning I would load up a giant tea ball with a combination of green tea and 'red berry tea' (this is available at coops and health food stores in bulk form) and make about half a Mr. Coffee pot of it. Three mugs. It wakes you up, and you are bathing your esophagus in antioxidants and "red plant phytonutrients/cancer fighters". I believe this is VERY IMPORTANT>

Later in the evening, an hour before retiring, I would make a cup or two of just the red berry tea (don't want caffeine then! ) and substitute the green tea with aloe vera juice. I think this is even MORE IMPORTANT. I believe that my Barrett's was primarily caused by 'upper GI sloshing" into the esophagus at night while asleep.

-if I'm going to have stuff sloshing all over my Barrett's, why not make it something that fights it and sooths it? This tea and nightly regimen may be the most important part of the whole regimen.

Ginger Tea

This wasn't intended to treat the Barrett's but seems to help combat they gnawing HH feeling you sometimes get. Heat up some water, pour some powdered ginger into a glass, add honey, stir. Let the ginger settle to the bottom if you like.

Apple Cider Vinegar.

I went on occasional 'binges' of drinking AC Vinegar diluted in water, once daily for weeks, then would discontinue. Just too much to do, and not much fun. But I did this enough to note. It seems to alleviate HH symptoms as well.

POSTURE/BREATHING

I have a theory: I'm a 'sloucher'. And I sit in a slouchy chair in front of a computer a lot of the time. Or while watching TV.

If you look at a crowd of men (women too but men seem more pronounced) you'll see two types: "slouchers" who seem to lean over their chests, and 'belly pushers", guys who stick their guts out and lean back in a way. I've also noted that 'slouchers' tend to be quieter, restrained people, and 'belly pushers' more aggressive, outspoken people.

I think that 'slouching' is more than physically conducive to HH/GERD. I think the body is 'building and holding stress' in the lower esophageal region. Muscles are tensing, nervous system excited, but it's all staying there.

So, every day I would do this before exercise or yoga, or just by itself.

The Belly Pushing Exercise

A note of caution: keep very aware of potential dizziness, feeling faint.

If you feel that way, quit and kneel down and let the feeling pass.

1. Stand normally. Notice your breathing. You're probably breathing into your chest.

And your shoulders are leaning forward. Pull your shoulders back!

2. Take a deep breath INTO YOUR BELLY, making the area around your belly

button stick way, way out. RELAX your stomach muscles. See how big you can

make your belly! Pretend you are a fat guy, and this air in your belly is your fat. Do this several times, making sure to hold in the air for a while. Remember the shoulders.

3. Now do it again just the same, but this time pay attention not to your belly, but to

your Solar Plexus - that's the region above your belly but just below the center of your ribcage. Note that it isn't relaxed. Try to do the same breaths, but once you've relaxed the belly, relax the Solar Plexus, as if you are 'expanding the air' into that region. This actually takes a lot of practice to do, and you'll often get dizzy from it.

If you're holding your shoulders back, you may notice a tension on either side of your neck, near the collarbone. THEN you know it's working. It's working as a stretch/tension/massage on the region and you'll know it if you repeat this, because eventually it relaxes. Internally, you can visualize a sort of 'thoracic push'. Do this a few times if you can. Remember, just duck down and take a breath if you feel faint/dizzy.

After doing this for a few months, I've gotten to the point where I can 'move' my musculature outward almost like a wave - from belly out, then upward to solar plexus, and chest and then back downward - with little effort, even sitting in the office.

I try to do this exercise regularly - almost daily - because the old 'slouching habit' is a lifelong imprint that returns quickly.

The Reverse La-z-boy.

This isn't really anything but a short-term fix for when you have a HH 'gnaw attack'.

If you have a recliner, set it in front of the TV facing AWAY from the TV. Now, set it into full recline position and sit BELLY DOWN in the recliner, so that your chin is at the head of the recliner, and watch TV. This seems to rearrange things inside so that you have some temporary relief of the HH, and you can watch TV while doing so. I have read books this way, I just put a footstool below the head of the la-z-boy.

SUPPLEMENTS

I consumed an awful lot of supplements, but I have for years before my HH. I will simply list the ones I took specifically for this regimen, then follow it with my 'normal' heap o' supplements. That said, there's no reason to assume that my normal supplements weren't instrumental in my recovery as well.

HH specific:

Candida cleansing supplements.

I think this may be the most important supplement you can take. The symptoms of this fungal infection are varied and elusive. But I'll tell you: I got on these and not just did the HH symptoms lessen, I felt great. I thought candida was one of those hypocondriac diseases, but now I am convinced. I believe that Candida is a very powerful antagonist that may enable Barrett's.

DO IT. Take these for six months along with...

Drink Metamucil or equivalent every day. IMPORTANT!

I tended to drink it in the EARLY evening as a 'snack', believe it or not.

Never take it at the same time as vitamins. It just soaks 'em up.

It keeps it all moving DOWN, not up.

MULTI-DOPHILUS

PAPAYA ENZYME

I also take a wide variety of vitamins, the 'alphabet variety' plus aminos ahd antioxidants as a lifetime practice.

EXERCISE

I've done basic yoga for years: Sun Salutations, a few other things.

But at the beginning of this enterprise I took up running. It not just is good for your cardio but you are always 'bobbing', pushing stuff downward. I do three miles a day.

If you're not a runner,

Try three miles, but just run a block, walk a block. Then two blocks, one. Then three, one. After a month you'll be fine, able to run it with just a few half-block walks.

VICES

I smoke. For six of the 12 months I was on Chantix. I smoked very, very lightly on Chantix. One or two a day, max. Many many days with none. It worked. Got off Chantix, smoked again. There is utterly no doubt that smoking is a strong factor in Barrett's. Try to quit. You know they're relaxing your stomach sphincters. That's real bad. If you can't:

1. If you eat, don't smoke. If you smoke, don't eat. In other words, no 'after dinner smoke'. Keep them separated by hours at least.

2. If you are drinking in the evening, and a smoker: try to smoke as little as possible. Alcohol multiplies the smoking/GERD syndrome.

3. That morning smoke. If you must have it, skip breakfast. Otherwise, you'll be suffering all day. If you have breakfast, don't smoke for at least two hours after breakfast.

If you feel you are drinking too much, do something about it like joining AA. Or follow the 'European Model" and learn to drink reasonably and not declare yourself 'diseased and must abdicate to God'.

I found that if I was suffering from HH symptoms most DURING THE EVENING, that two alcoholic drinks relieved my symptoms immensely. Note I said IN THE EVENING. I do not advocate 'medicinal drinking' during the day.

If I was out on an evening of drinking, I always made sure to drink some water at the end of the night, then drink some red berry tea/Aloe or just chug some Aloe before going to bed. This, again, made sure that whatever was 'sloshing over my esophagus' was healing more than damaging. I think fermented beverages are a bad thing: the fermentation enables candida and is generally impure, and also fill you up, providing a 'toxic esophageal slurry' for bedtime. Beer and wine are 'dirty' liquors.

I switched to distilled mixed drinks, asking for seltzer water rather than tonic.

Careful though, those mixed drinks can carry a punch! If you're a beer drinker, don't down them like beer.

To you beer drinkers: Craft your buzz: don't get carried away and become an alcoholic or fool. Mix your drinks weak, then you can have lots of them.

TO THOSE OF YOU WHO GO OUT AND SMOKE AND DRINK (COMMON VICTIMS OF BARRETT"S)

Think about it: A night of drinking and smoking. You go home to sleep. Your throat is coated with nicotine, your stomach full of alcohol. That combo sloshes around in your upper GI all night. No wonder you have Barrett's! Do yourself a favor, no matter how tired/drunk you are: try to taper off in your last hour, and then go home and drink the red berry/aloe mixture or just aloe, and drink a good size glass, not a sip. Turn the slosh into a healer, not a killer. And brush your teeth and tongue first!

ONE MORE THING

I got one of those wedges to sleep on that raises your upper body. A great investment. It takes some getting used to, but after a while you prefer it.

It really, really helps! It keeps the 'slosh' downhill."

QUESTION

11/29/2010: Evelyn from Lakeland, Florida writes: "I was diagnosed with chronic Acid Reflux, Hiatal hernia, Barretts esophagus and mild gastritis and was prescribed 2 Omeprazole 20mg a day. The pills don't seem to be working; In fact it is getting worse. I have a pressure in my chest all the time. My heartbeat is irregular. I have been experiencing hair loss. I am also upset that I was told that I would be on these pills for the rest of my life. I have not tried the ACV and worry that it will upset the Barretts. If anyone out there has any suggestions I would really appreciate your feedback. I have also suffered from chronic cough but have been using Saline nasal spray every night before bed and in the morning. My cough is completely gone. I lived on cough drops. It is worth a try. Thanks to everyone on this site. I will certainly try some of these remedies."

11/29/2010: Mike from Montreal, Quebec replies: "Evelyn its always nice to hear from someone with almost identical digestive issues I had for the first time in my life that started about a year ago. I am now completely free from the symptoms you mentioned BECAUSE I DECIDED NOT TO TRUST DOCTORS AT ALL!! . I am in no way attempting to sell a specific product so use your judgment and DON'T BE AFRAID TO EXPERIMENT. That is so important!!! Because doctors are well known to prescribe drugs that is the result of a completely wrong diagnostic of your disease. When you trust ANY doctor and decide to take his or her prescribed medications then you are at very serious risk of making your disease get worse. If you really care about your health then don't be afraid to EXPERIMENT. I have done so towards my medical problem that was similar to yours which took me about a year and you would not believe how many natural products I have tried until I was able to find the right combination!!! Here is how I cure my problem:

(1) I started eating RAW fruits and vegetables at least twice a day. This would include carrots, beets, romaine lettuce, spinach, parsley, radish, cucumber, broccoli (yes in raw form),
And all the fresh fruits available at the supermarket including fresh pineapple. MAIN RESULTS: huge impact in completely getting rid of my heartburn.

(2) Lots of fresh salmon cooked in olive oil.

(3) Chicken soup everyday (chicken fat builds the immune system)

(4) 4 cups of green tea with peppermint. It was hard at first to keep eating fresh fruits and vegetables but in the end it was all well worthed because I feel I now have the same energy level I had when I was a healthy 20 year old.

Evelyn, whether you realize it or not you may be on course to a complete disintegration of your whole digestive system so you must rebuild it like I have done so from scratch. The way to do so is at mealtime you must consume enzymes and especially Betaine HCL to help the healing process of your whole digestive system. It is similar to wearing a cast to mend a broken leg rather than continue to apply pressure on it. Enzymes and Betaine HCL will act as a supporting agent for your whole digestive system giving your stomach, liver and pancreas a much needed rest after every meal. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables will provide the necessary minerals and vitamins desperately needed by your body to rebuild your digestive system. I hope you take this advice seriously because I can never picture myself in a hospital bed under extensive sedation rotting away in unspeakable pain because of terminal illness that could have easily been prevented from eating the right kinds of food that my body needed all along. I was very fortunate that my disease did not reached an uncontrollable state because in total I only suffered 2 quite major heartburn and immediately took severe action to avoid the endless cycle of heartburn followed by antacid until your body becomes at risk of reaching cancerous stages. One heartburn is too many and is clearly signs of a deterioration digestive system I would not want to picture myself as a means of passing away in unbearable pain. I am not trying to scare you Evelyn, but rather hopefully help you recognize the warning signs that a significant change in eating habits is in order before irreparable damage to your whole digestive system is done.

It worked so well for me with no more heartburn, back to normal liver enzyme levels, cholesterol levels in the normal range and above all having disappointed my doctor who insisting that I have my gall bladder removed. Based on my ultrasound test just completed last week the radiologist in her own words stated "... Your gallbladder is not quite 100%". Again I am not trying to sell any products here and have no reason to lie about my remarkable recovery at the age of 58. I hope you will find this account of my personal experience with severe heartburn a motive to experiment with natural products until a cure is found. DON'T PUT IT OFF!!!! Everyday you allow to continue may add one more nail in your coffin. That is what got me paying attention to eating the right kind of food.

As a last remark I would say the greatest contribution in my opinion for completely restoring my health had to be the result of mainly consuming large quantities of Betaine HCL. This in combination with as many fresh fruits and vegetables along with plenty of salmon and chicken fat was the magic bullet for me. I always say that each heartburn is equivalent to a heart attack for a patient with a weak heart. The end results always lead to further deterioration and eventually... Well you can take it from there. Mike"

Your post is very informative. Can you educate me how does chicken fat help with immune system ? Whenever I make my chicken stock, I always skim that off, maybe I should not do that in the future."

07/13/2009: John from Ft. Defiance, Va writes: "barrets esophagus and acid reflux

I along with my father suffer from heartburn. I'm 60 and he's passed away. I had terrible pains in my chest for years but thought that was the way it was. Went on a flight, that night had great thirst, drank oj in the am and had a bad esophogal rupture, nearly fatal. Cauterized and ok. Put on nexium, full fealing, then protonix about 8 years ago. Then got rocky mtn. spotted fever. At first not diagnosed even though I'd seen the red bullseye. Thought it was lymes but that was negative. Finally put on antibiotics which made me extremely ill, nausea etc. Still had problems and went through another round. Terrible nausea. This went on for about 1 1/2 years and still current. At some point I became extremely nauseated by protonix and all other similar drugs. I'd rather take a chance on dying from barrets than live like that. Any alternatives to nexium, protonix, prevacid, kapidex? Any info greatly appreciated. My gastro dr. says there's no other way to go. Thanks"

12/17/2009: Galina from Lombard, Il replies: "Hi John,

You could try to coat your esophagus by taking a intestinal powder that contains L-Glutamine, N-Acetyl D-Glucosamine, Gamma Oryzanol, Cranesbill Root, Ginger Root (Zingiber officinale), Marigold Flower and Marshmallow Root with the scoop there and a glass of water. You could find this powder at Whole Foods. Also, for softening of esophagus try MSM, buy it at Whole foods. Try to drink fltered or baby water and keep drinking a lot, a gallon a day. B vitamins may help. Also, elevate your bed 6-8 inches, where your head is. Try to buy at Whole Foods probiotics, __________, and take a half pack in the morning and and half in the evening with a little bit of water to just make a solution. May also take a pill probiotics. Check your gallbladder, do a HIDA scan and ultrasound and on the HIDA scan see if your ejection rate is above 50-60%. If so, your gallbladder may be overactive and it may cause lots of gallbladder reflux. Also try herb pills like Bee Propolis, Cod Liver Oil or Fish Oil, Biotin; they are all natural, buy them at the Health food Store, like Whole Foods, cause you do not know what is in the other pills sold at the regular pharmacies. No coffee, cigarettes, juices, spicy, fried, acidic and fast food! Try to eat soft lean meats like chicken, rice, potatoes and FISH! Hope it works for you."

06/02/2009: Susanne from Seattle, WA replies: "Eva and Marla, I feel for you. I was diagnosed with Barretts almost three years ago. I'd seldom had heartburn until I woke in the middle of the night with that terrible burning sensation all the way thru to my back. Doctor prescribed Omepresol, then doubled the dose, but it didn't help. I stopped taking medications (despise them and their side effects), instead taking digestive enzymes and an HCL with pepsin tablet with first bites of food. Also take a probiotic and avoid fatty foods. THIS WORKS for me! What a RELIEF! I had a second (whatever it's called when a camera is put into the throat/stomach) and the doctor told me to continue doing what I'm doing. If I ever do have indigestion I take a couple tsp. of apple cider vinegar (with the mother in it) in water followed by a tsp. of honey. (Get local honey that hasn't had all the good stuff ruined by heating to too high a temp.) Marla, I can tell you just the thing to bring your body to the proper alkaline/acid balance, but it involves a product name, so email me Susanne@WaterHarmony.com if you are interested. Good luck to you both!"
12/17/2009: Galina from Lombard, Il replies: "Hi Susanne, I was diagnosed with Barrett's as well, have chronic acute gastroesophagitis, hiatal hernia and GERD, to name a few of them. I would appreciate if you could e-mail me the product to bring my my alcaline/acid balance in e-mail. My e-mail is galinasg@gmail.com Please write down any other information about what you do, so that I could try that as well. Thank you very much Susanne!"
06/09/2010: Mitzi from Portland, Tn replies: "Hi Susanne,

Yesterday I was diagnosed with Barrett's and am trying to find a natural remedy. I only drink filtered water and try to eat mostly oragnic foods. I don't eat a lot of fatty foods, but I do love spicy foods. So I know that I have to stop that. As well as my coffee every morning (UGH!!). Would you please email me at mitzirs@yahoo.com with the product to bring my alkaline/acid balance back to normal? I am going to pick up some aloe vera juice and DGL Licorice today as well. THANKS!!!"

I had thrush several months ago and was prescribed Nystatin. It was like a miracle drug. My fatigue, muscle pain and joint pain all disappeared. I had energy that I haven't had in years. I started making the connection that I had an yeast issue. I have been on antibiotics and steroids on and off for years and I believe the candida is extreme. Now, I have been diagnosed with Barrett's Syndrome and read that acid both feeds yeast and causes this condition. Can anyone help me? The candida diet seems VERY extreme. Thanks!"
