<description> Nat from North East, Australia writes: "Has anyone else looked into the link with Vit D Deficency &amp; BV? I have found from personal experience that when I don't keep the raw milk up the Hypoglycemia &amp; BV flares up again. Also treating it with outside remedies is only temporary if your gut bacteria is unbalanced so you need to commit to a full diet change (like treating Thrush, No sugar, yeasts ect) for a period of time to get lasting results.

<description> New York from New York, United States writes: "I don't know how this started but I've had this problem for as long as I can remember but I didn't realize it wasn't normal. I'm 16 now but I really realized that I had bv 2 years ago. I went to the doctor and they gave me the pills saying its help but it doesn't. It will go away for a little bit and come back. I'm so tired of bv, the odor is horrible and is so strong. It's so embarrasing because it prevents me from doing a lot of activities because after school the scent is unbearable. I tried eating the yogurt and drinking this probotic drink called goodbelly but it hasn't worked and it's been three weeks. So now I'm lost and I'm scared to take all these pills and on top of that I don't know what pills to take. Can someone help me please? I don't wanna live with this for the rest of my life!!"</description>

<description>[YEA] Kathy from Loganville, Ga writes: "When I was 17 and sexually active I began noticing a horrible smell from the vagina area. I would have sex but would never have an orgasm. I would douche but the smell would come back. I would go to the OB-GYN and get antbiotics and it would clear up until the next time I had sex. This persisted for several years.

I got married and with experimentation and becoming more comfortable with my own body I started having orgasms. After the first orgasm I never had another infection. When you are sexually aroused but never achieve release the body will protest with an infection. Learn about your own body in order to achieve orgasm. Buy a vibrator if you have to. I believe the OB docs know this is the problem but won't tell their patients. I am 55 years old and have not had a problem since. I hope this helps someone.

<description> Laura from Central, Va writes: "I enjoy reading all the stuff about BV but when the metronidazole didn't work my doc grew out a vaginal culture and found that I not only had the regular BV, I had vaginal E coli causing mine. Keflex didn't work.

BV from E coli doesn't stink but I am such bad discomfort sometimes I have to soak in the tub or I cry and I swell up terrible and I can never wear pants or underware for that matter so I am stuck in a long skirt without panties and that isn't my style.

I am having the best luck with oil of oregano 4 times per day by mouth put it in a veggie cap and only buy the pure expensive stuff and goldenseal vaginal suppositories however it is a very slow road and it seems if I stop or slow down one or the other bam I am sore again. No sex for almost 2 months just hurts too much and I also am taking refrigerated probiotics twice a day on an empty stomach and lots of Vit C.

Is there anyone out that that has battled BV caused by Ecoli and how did they get rid of it?

Thanks sore, sad, and going insane in Va.

<description>[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] Annie from Brooklyn, Ny writes: "I wanted to share my wonderful experience with earth clinic and all the great posts. I had been suffering for about 2 years. And intially the problem was not too bad so I ignored it. However, as time went on it progressed and got worse. That horribe smell and soaking through all my undergarments even at time my pants. So I finally made the trip to the GYN, she confirmed that there was no sexually transmitted disease (which I knew, because I wasnt active). All she could offer was to wear cotton panties and use hypo allergenic soaps and detergents. Yeah!! This was only part of the solution. I began a regimen of folic acid, acidophilus and washing with the hydrogen perixode. At first, I saw no results and was disappointed. But I came back to earth clinic and read more and more posts and learned to be patient and give it time. Also I worked on my diet, as I learned this was a factor as well in changing things. I began to eat more ruffage, yourgurt regularly and decreased my sugar intake. The information was so helpful and encouraged me not to give up. So I didnt, and it took about 3 months before I saw results. And I am so proud to say that I have it under control. The symptoms will reappear if I forgot to take the acidolphilus or dont eat the ruffage that my body so needs. So now, no more foul odor or wet undergarments. Why dont the doctors tell us about this ideas? Thank you so much to all the wonderful ladies of earth clinic for sharing your stories and information!!!!

<description> Finally Free Of Bv! from Newark, De writes: "I'm 42, 5'4" and 170 lbs. Five months ago I thought I had a yeast infection, but the OTC meds did not work so I went to see my gyno. I was diagnosed w/ BV. I was prescribed Metro-gel, Flagyl, and Tindamax one after the other. Nothing changed, in fact, my discharge got worse. It was a raging case. Fortunately, I did not have a fishy smell. Unfortunately, I had to buy pantyliners in bulk and wear them 24/7. The worst of it was the raw irritation and swelling.

I was really discouraged after reading blogs (this site is my favorite) and finding that so many women are having the same problem. So I started trying many of the home remedies. I went to my local nature food market and bought Garlique, Cranberry, Vit. C, Vit. D3, Beta-carotine, Vit. E-400, B-Complex w/ 400 mg. Folic Acid, Zinc, tea tree oil suppositories, and the most helpful (I believe) was the Fem-dophilus. I even took baths with 2-3 cups of organic apple cider vinegar which gave me relief only for a day. I NEVER douched. I also tried RePHresh gel, but I was leary b/c of the parabens in it. Five months was long enough... I didn't want to be one of those women who suffers with BV for years. I've seen 11 different doctors and NPs about this. The last one I saw was an NP at my Gyno office. She told me that my vagina was not just irritated - it was ANGRY!!! So true!

She gave me one more antibiotic thinking that maybe my infection was coming from higher up than the vagina and this a/b would be better at reaching it if that is the case. The name of the a/b is Doxycycline. I took 100mg capsules 2x/day for 10 days. I have another day and a half to go, but the discharge is GONE!!! I think it is key to take Fem-dophilus b/c yes, ABs will kill the good and bad bacteria so the Fem-Dophilus keeps feeding the vagina the good while the bad is being knocked down by the AB. I will keep taking the Fem-Dophilus 2x/day for several months and then wean myself to hopefully one/day. I will also wean myself off of the supplements except for the B-Complex w/ 400mg Folic Acid. (I also threw away all of my old underwear and bought all cotton new undies. ) I use to mix my undies in 'Lights' and 'Darks' in the washing machine, but from now on I will wash my undies separately with Woolite in hot water. Also, I gave up coffee and have severely limited my sugar intake. I think this is extemely helpful as well. Best of luck, ladies... I know how frustrating this is... Never give up!

<description>[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] Marina from Grants Pass, Oregon writes: "I want to thank everyone for all of their posts. It's too bad people don't actually follow up after a "24 hour miracle cure". I would like to know more about long-term results.

I am 43 years old and only just found out about this BV - I feel terribly about all the mean thoughts I've ever had in a public restroom over the years. CLEARLY, you do know when you smell that badly. It is horrible to be stinky from your V. One thing that surprised me is, I have had a terrible phobia of having odor 'down there' because of a girl I knew in college. When BV took over my life and sex life, my WORST fear came true, only worse because my stench was far nastier then I ever imagined was possible. It made me gag one night after sex and I had to wonder, how in the world does my bf even want to get near that foul grossness ? ? ? ? He never complained once and it honestly does not bother him like it does me.

One thing I have noticed in the posts is that I think too many people, like with antibiotics, stop too soon when then notice results. It is bacteria you are trying to manipulate so it is very much like antibiotic treatment and needs to be followed for 7-10 consecutive days. The study people reference is a peroxide solution douche 1 time per day for 7-10 days. This is the treatment time I am going to follow.

After you do the peroxide wash, wait a few minutes and then insert a high quality probiotic. Do not use flavored wafers or anything that contains sugar, read the ingredients. The first time I used a pro-b I had on hand. The capsule is thick and it basically stuck to the side of my who-ha, I did not like this. I found the refrigerated kind have thinner gel caps that break down more readily and don't stick or cause grittiness. I like to sterilize a needle and poke several pinholes into the capsule so that I know it is releasing faster through the capsule. I insert it as far as I can. I do a 50/50 peroxide solution wash at night only and insert 1 probiotic 5 minutes later. I insert another pro-B in the morning. I'm all about organic cotton panty liners at the moment.

I also started taking a high quality, easily digestible pre-natal once-a-day multi-vitamin that can be taken without food. It does not make me sick like others. It has 800 mg of Folic Acid, probiotics &amp; other goodies. It is a great multi-vitamin in general for women no matter what your fertility interests are. It will not hurt you in anyway if you are not pregnant or post menopause. For the 10 days treatment I am taking 1 vitamin in the am &amp; pm and I am also taking 1 capsule of a refrigerated 10 billion, 6 strain probiotic orally twice a day. I intend to drop down to 1 a day for the vitamin &amp; probiotic after the 10 remedy phase. I have actually been wanting to add both of these daily but I just didn't stick with it. NOW, I especially have reason to stick with it.

My diet is very healthy and I still got BV. I believe somehow when my bits mix with my man's bits (DNA, sweat, skin cells) it somehow creates some kind imbalance inside me or an acid???? I say acid because of the burning/itching feeling after sex. Neither of us has an STD.

I started the process only 4 days ago. So far so good. I'm posting now because I wanted to add my tips and observations. I feel grateful because the man is gone for one month so I have time to rebalance and not get my new environment distrubed. I think you must abstain from sex during your treatment. You have to get the upper hand on the bacteria and sex just keeps encouraging replenishing the bad environment.

I plan to use the syringe with a weaker solution after sex in the future when I go pee. It's probably a good idea to toss a pro b up there once in awhile for maintenance as well if this is a reoccurring problem. If you ever use a syringe type thing, (needle without a needle) be sure to go S-L-O-W-L-Y &amp; don't force the plunger. You will create too much pressure &amp; can possibly push the infection up higher by blasting in the solution with force. You want to slowly flood the V-canal with the solution and let it do its thing for a few minutes then release it. I put a towel in the bathtub and lay back with my legs up.

<description>[YEA] Gin from Bristol, Connecticut writes: "My doctor told me to open a acidophilus capsule, mix it with water to make a bit of a paste, and insert it. I have to do this after sex because that's when I get issues. So far it has worked wonders. I've been doing it for about a month or so and have no adverse effects. Only problem is that the powder in the capsule DOESN'T mix with water so I mix it the best I can, and use a small plastic tongue depresser type thing and insert it that way.

<description> Buffy from Newport News, Va, Usa writes: "Hi ladies. I'm just 18 and Iv had BV for about 3 months now, at first I didn't tell anyone it was so embarrassing and I assumed it would go away on its own, not knowing what it was. After awhile I started spending my own money on stuff for yeast infections thinking that's what I had as I had never heard of bv before. I told my mom I thought I had a yeast infection and she told me I was "dirty" making me feel so much worse and resulting in my not telling her about the BV.

After 2 months I was fed up and saw a doctor, I was so excited to know what it was and that there was a simple pill to cure me! But I was lied to, I took the antibiotic she prescribed for 7 days, it's been almost 3 weeks since then and it hasn't gone away at all, didn't even blink in the face of that medication. I've been researching this all night as I cannot deal with it! My sex life has only just started recently and already I had to give it up because I'm so embarrassed. This site is amazing, I've been reading people's comments and stories all night, I've been crying with you guys and feeling your pain and gotten alot of suggestions. I'm going to the store tomorrow to get treatments.

<description> Kelley from St Louis, Missouri writes: "SO glad I found this website. This is something I have been battling for years now and my doctor even told me 3 years ago that maybe it was my husband that needed to be checked out instead of me, and as of this last year I can see that she was definantly right. It is probably him and nothing I am doing wrong after such an embarrassing problem all this time.

The longest I have been "odor free" after taking flagyl has just been 3 months. Very frustrating. As of right now the yogurt is working for me. I am eating it and also putting it in vaginally and got relief within 48 hours so now I ask, do I do it symptomatically or do I need to do it for so long?

Also very interested in the soaking in apple cidar vinegar and the tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is amazing product that we always keep in the house for multiple things, so I was thrilled to read this was one thing that would help.

Also. a question to see if anyone else has a thought on this. Another friend of mine and I had this discussion to shave or not to shave. We both shaved off our private areas, and that is when our vaginal problems became progressively worse.

We both honored no shave november and are waiting to see if this changes our occurence of vaginosis since the body is meant to have hair and may be a natural protection in the bad bacteria over growth.

Does anyone know anything about this?

<description> Lady Garden from Manchester, Uk writes: "Hello ladies, I may have to take back a few of the things I said previously. I admit that I may have been wrong about one or two things but...

I think I've found a something which will keep BV at bay and is not too messy and not expensive and seems to do a very good job indeed and there's no douching involved!! It's called lactobacillus Sporogenes and it's a supplement which comes in tablet form. I have been using it as a vaginal supository and a suplement for several days (one week after my period when things usualy get bad) and there has been no odor whatsoever. You can get a particular 'daily' one from a particular supplement brand with the initials 'H. N. ' (google it). I have been using one a night vaginally and also taking one/two a day. However it feels like I could use the one vaginally less regularly and things would still be fine. I intend to try that out and experiment after I've continued with my current dose for 14 days straight. I've read about lots of studies in which BV was cured after using two of these particular types of supplement two (morning and night) a day vaginally for 14 days. The tablets disolve completely with minimal sticky leakage. If you put one in at night it's completely dissolved/absorbed by the morning.

Even if it's necessary to use these tablets for the rest of my life at least I know I don't ever have to deal with the awful symptoms of this horrible condition.

Lactobacillus Sporogenes is a particularly hardy probiotic which, unlike many, can survive harsh stomach acid and colonise in the colon. I truly believe that probiotics are the things we need to focus on if we intend to conquer this problem and stop it from consuming our lives. More studies need to be done in this area as all the ones so far have shown very positive and promising results.

I really hope this helps others the way it seems to have helped me.

I stopped going to school cause of my anxiety about the smell which led to truancy fines and bad grades. But now I am doing better and in homeschool. But If this would've never happened to me I know for a fact I would be in normal school able to socialize. &amp; it's like doctors don't help me and my family doesn't understand how much this effects me no matter how much I tell them. <description> Kaleialoha from Pocono Summit, Pennsylvania, Usa writes: "Hi, I was just recently diagnosed with BV. The only symptom that I was aware of was the horrible discharge, and usually only after intercourse. I always thought that a yeast infection was coming about, but then the discharge would go away, and I thought nothing of it. My doctor gave me a script of METRONIDAZOLE, told me to take it accordingly and everything would be ok. Well, come to find out, my mother-in-law was perscribed METRONIDAZOLE about 20 years ago and then found out that she was pregnant. Because there isn't/wasn't enough studies done with the antibiotic during pregnancy, her Dr. faced her with the decision to carry full turm or to abort.

So now here I am 20 something years later, pregnant with her second gradchild (my second child), and not knowing what to do. I haven't taken any of the meds and decided not to, but this decision leaves my BV untreated, and from what I've been researching, this isn't something that should be left untreated.

I've been reading alot of what other women with BV have to say about treating BV with natural remedies and am wondering if there is anything out there that is safe for pregnant women.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! ?!

<description> Bella_vista2 from San Mateo, Ca writes: "I'm so thankful for this website. I tried the remedies I read and I just had to post my own story.

A few weeks ago I was at work and I noticed a putrid smell. After sniffing around my desk, I was mortified to discover it was coming from my crotch. I haven't been sexually active in months and I hadn't changed laundry detergents or soaps. I also haven't been sick or changed my diet. I don't even take pain relievers when I have headaches. The only changes I experienced in the prior two months was excessive watery discharge, but my body does things like that from time to time (excessive discharge, occasional spotting) and I just wear pantyliners - no big deal. It usually goes away after a couple of cycles. I figured my body is just doing it's thing since I am in my mid-thirities and I've read that in midlife hormone levels change as a natural process of aging.

Anyway, I noticed the odor would penetrate everything - it was absolutely disgusting. I decided to go onto the internet and self-diagnose. I don't normally recommend this, but I've always been an information hound and I research EVERYTHING and the earliest I could see my gynecologist was a few weeks out.

Based on the symptoms and what I've read, I'm pretty sure I have a mild form of BV.

I researched the postive/negative effects of Acidophilus, Folic Acid, vitamin B-Complex, effects of excess sugar (I realized my soda consumption had increased significantly the last two months due to free drinks offered at work, etc. ). I read up on whether or not too much is good or bad for you, etc. Do your research and I'm sure you will come to some of my same conclusions.

From everything I read, I decided my diet was the first place to start. The first day I took 1 multivitamin that I had onhand. It's the brand that starts with C and I took it because it had 400mg of Folic Acid in it. Within an hour or two I noticed the smell had significantly gone away. I was super excited to see these results, so the next day I decided to go out and purchase Acidophilus and a bottle of just 400mg Folic Acid. I started a regimen and I am happy to say there is no smell and no excessive discharge.

This is what worked for me:

Day 1: 1 multivitamin that has 400mg Folic Acid plus B-vitamins (taken at noon)

Day 2: 1 multivitamin, 1 400mg tablet of Folic Acid 1 Acidophilus 25 Billion CFUs inserted vaginally (taken/inserted right before bed). I wore a pantyliner since some people had posted there might be discharge from the capsule. Also, be sure your Acidophilus has multiple strains in it. I read somewhere that not all Acidophilus products are the same.

Day 3: 1 multivitamin 400 mg tablet of Folic Acid 1 Acidiophilus tablet taken orally (I took these at noon on an empty stomach and waited about 20 minutes before eating lunch. My research concluded it was better to take the probiotic on an empty stomach since food can affect the absorption and potency). I also had no discharge or smell this day.

Day 4: 1 multivitamin 1 400 mg Folic Acid. I skipped the Acidophilus altogether. Today my vagina discharged what was left of the capsule I had inserted. It was no big deal - just some granules (the mucous was kind of gritty), but it was noticeable when I wiped after going to the bathroom.

During this time I also cut back on soda and drank more water and soy milk. I can't exactly go cold turkey with the diet, you know? Baby steps and small changes!

I'm not sure if I will continue taking all of these pills daily, but I'm certainly paying more attention to my diet and what it's doing to my vagina. I'll probably continue with the multivitamin every few days and maybe throw in the additional Folic Acid from time to time and take an Acidophilus occasionally too, for maintenance purposes.

Thank you all for posting your stories. I'm a firm believer in natural remedies and that knowledge is power.

Good luck!

<description> Erin M from New Orleans, Louisiana writes: "I am starting my third round of Yeast &amp; BV throwing party in my Vagina.

My doc prescribed me Flagyl (ugh) and cream for my yeast infection. Tonight (I went to the doc yestserday) I bought Garlique, Culturelle Probiotic and cranbery pills. My doc suggested that after this round that I should stick the Culturelle Probiotic up in my who-ha twice a week for six months.

Other changes:

I'm changing from the Pink Dove soap to the White Dove Soap

I am buying all new panties - WHITE cotton (I typically wear colored cotton panties).

One I HATE FLAGYL so much... so so soooo much.

Fun fact - I haven't had sex or any type of sexual activity for a year and a half and this started in August 2011.

I want this to be over.

<description> Lou10bus from Charlotte, Nc writes: "Hi. I have suffered with BV off and on for over 15 years. I have tried many remedies, from this site and other sites, none had a lasting effect. I read a research article (can't remeber the site) but it stated that the effects of gycerol monolaurate on BV had positive results after conducting a study of 39 female subjects. I ordered some from a company on line "lauricidin." So far, so good.

Here is what I did. The study suggested using 5-50 mg/ml every 12 hrs vaginally for 2 days along with taking 2-5 bil probiotics everyday. After day 2 no smell at all! I took the ointment and filled an empty gel cap and inserted it vaginally. Day 2 no smell!

Good Luck!

<description>[YEA] Christina from Ny writes: "I've been battling bv for nine years. Feeling very tired, annoyed and ashamed of the problem I decided to permanently rid myself of its annoying presence. The prescriptions that my doctor gave me were too expensive and did nothing to cure it. So I decided to take a more holistic/nonconventional way. My first nonconventional approach was a douche bottle filled with 50 percent water and 50 percent hydrogen peroxide with a little tea tree oil. As well as taking orally acidophilus, vitamin c, folic acid, echinacea, golden seal, iron, vitamin b-12, and vitamin, d-3. It did subdue some symptoms but it did not completely work for me. So my next step was filling a douche bottle with 50% Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and 50% water, along with the same long list of supplements previously mentioned. This method still didn't work for me, however it did help cleanse the vagina.

Finally what rid me of the problem completely was inserting boric acid using the vaginal applicators from my previous prescriptions as well as taking 3-6 fenugreek 610mg pills orally a day. I'm blessed to say that I have been bv free for a year now. I would like to thank this site and its contributors for giving me what seems to be a second chance at life. As well as opening my eyes to the possibilities, of hidden and secret cures. I'm very curious as to why there isn't much research in alternative medicine.

****Good Luck****

<description> Gia from Washington, Dc writes: "I had been in search of a cure for bacterial vaginosis for sometime.. &amp; I have yet to come across 1 until I read a post by 'bvfree from Walterboro, SC'. (second post) She recommended douching with freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. Just squeeze half of grape naturally without water and douche with it. If this was not a winner, I don't know what is! Works like magic ladies!! Trust. Thnx again 'bvfree from walterboro'!

<description>[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] Naomi Jane from Howell, Michigan writes: "I have had Bacterial Vaginosis for 6 years, after vaginal surgery where they had to give me strong antibiotics and it kill all my good bacteria. Of course went through all the the normal creams, 5 times, Flagli, douching with watered down yogurt, taking 25 billion iu's of acidopholis daily. Eating the new Choboni yogurt that has 5 different cultures. Finally got on the boric acid capules. I have to use this every night or it comes back. I wish there was a permanent cure but I just don't think there is. I have yet to find an applicater that is easy and smooth to us. The ones that come with the cream are rough around the edge. I am going to continue the boric acid since nothing else has worked for me.

I have been diagnosed with bv about 3 months ago &amp; was givin antibiotics for the bv it whent but then came back about a month and a half after the treatment. I said I wasn't going 2 continue 2 use the antibiotics cause that also destroys the good bacteria in the vagina. So I googled &amp; found many natural remedies for bv &amp; the one that caught my eye was the probiotics &amp; the organic plain yogurt &amp; I started using the probiotics capsules 2 times a day &amp; eating the yogurt I cup a day &amp; inserting the yogurt vaginally once a day &amp; I gotta say about a week in 2 the home treatment, NOTHING!!!! The fishy smell &amp; the vaginal discharge was Gone!!! I knew that it was helping &amp; I got rid of it with probiotics &amp; organic plain yougurt Thank God &amp; the home remedies. You just have 2 b patient when using home remedies, remember that it dosn't work the same way for everyone. For some it worked in just 3 days but for me it took a week in 2 b gone but hey it beats using anitiotics witch just helps for a while but dosn't treat it from the root. So try it &amp; c what works for u. I just keep eating the yougurt daily &amp; keep drinking the probiotics just 2 keep it from coming back. Good luck 2 you hope it works keep the faith :0)

<description> Strongmindset from Milledgeville, Ga writes: "I'm only 20 years old and I have been dealing with BV for some time now. I went to my doctor because I had a foul odor and a thick discharge (mainly after sex). She told me I had BV. I was then prescribed Metronidazole. It worked for about 2 to 3 months and then it was back again. I was prescribed the medicine once more, and now 2 weeks later it's back. I've been reading the posts and I think I'm now going to try some of the remedies; mainly the boric acid. My fiance' is very supportive and he makes sure that I don't get discouraged.
