BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  07/06/2009: Kennedy from Broomeville, SC writes: "Hi ladies I have to say thanks for all of your input. I thought I was the only one in the world struggling with this problem. I've also researched that if you have an IUD that may be the cause of the BV as well. I've been taking one garlic pill twice a day. One in the morning and one at night. I've also been drinking a probiotic drink that has lots of bacteria that's similar to yogurt. I consume one every morning. So far for about a month, I've noticed some changes. I have little to no odor after intercourse and after my cycle. The discharge has decreased significantly! Hardly any at all."

10/03/2010: Chandy from Aurora, Colorado, United States writes: "My ph within my vaginal area is getting back to normal. I have reaccuring issue with BV, then yeast. I am currently I believe fixing the issue I hope. I use regular (read the ingredients) plain yogurt to deposit within, as well as a clove of garlic. I have no yeast within but the outside of my vagina is having a problem. The garlic does kill off anything, the yogurt ( I freeze and use oil to insert) is keeping good bacteria witch is what I am missing. I have read, about making a paste for a skin yeast infection. So yesterday I made a garlic paste and oh boy! It was so painfull! Oh my!!!! I tired real hard to keep reapplying even with yogurt all on the outside, now today I have a total peel going on with my skin down there. I hope to reapply the garlic and yogurt paste I have curing in the frig. I seem to be keeping the BV at easy for today. Any suggestions on my yeast skin infection within the skin of my down there area? will the garlic, ever stop burning! ? ouch!"

One more thing, exactly how are you inserting the yogurt? You freeze it first? and how do you get it inside the vagina?"
10/03/2010: Izzy from St. Louis, Mo replies: "Thank you for posting this, I am having the SAME problem, the yeast infection seems to localize on my vulva, uggggghhhh how irritating, I am at my wits end..."
10/07/2010: Chandy from Aurora, Colorado, United States replies: "I have some dallops of yogurt that are in the freezer. I coat them with coconut oil and insert. My body temp. warms it right up. I try to relax and be gentle. This is crazy it is driving me bonkers. I am so irritated. I hav now tried otc fungal cream made it worse! I am now trying tea tree oil. I am holding a bag of ice to the area. I have gone to the doc and had BV, she said it looked like yeast on the outside but not in my vagina. I took the stinkin meds prescribed and right away this lovely red itchy bottom came back. I have been staying away from sugars! I do not know where to go?"

01/23/2012: Buffy from Newport News, Va, Usa writes: "Hi ladies. I'm just 18 and Iv had BV for about 3 months now, at first I didn't tell anyone it was so embarrassing and I assumed it would go away on its own, not knowing what it was. After awhile I started spending my own money on stuff for yeast infections thinking that's what I had as I had never heard of bv before. I told my mom I thought I had a yeast infection and she told me I was "dirty" making me feel so much worse and resulting in my not telling her about the BV.

After 2 months I was fed up and saw a doctor, I was so excited to know what it was and that there was a simple pill to cure me! But I was lied to, I took the antibiotic she prescribed for 7 days, it's been almost 3 weeks since then and it hasn't gone away at all, didn't even blink in the face of that medication. I've been researching this all night as I cannot deal with it! My sex life has only just started recently and already I had to give it up because I'm so embarrassed. This site is amazing, I've been reading people's comments and stories all night, I've been crying with you guys and feeling your pain and gotten alot of suggestions. I'm going to the store tomorrow to get treatments."

01/17/2012: Kelley from St Louis, Missouri writes: "SO glad I found this website. This is something I have been battling for years now and my doctor even told me 3 years ago that maybe it was my husband that needed to be checked out instead of me, and as of this last year I can see that she was definantly right. It is probably him and nothing I am doing wrong after such an embarrassing problem all this time.

The longest I have been "odor free" after taking flagyl has just been 3 months. Very frustrating. As of right now the yogurt is working for me. I am eating it and also putting it in vaginally and got relief within 48 hours so now I ask, do I do it symptomatically or do I need to do it for so long?

Also very interested in the soaking in apple cidar vinegar and the tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is amazing product that we always keep in the house for multiple things, so I was thrilled to read this was one thing that would help.

Also. a question to see if anyone else has a thought on this. Another friend of mine and I had this discussion to shave or not to shave. We both shaved off our private areas, and that is when our vaginal problems became progressively worse.

We both honored no shave november and are waiting to see if this changes our occurence of vaginosis since the body is meant to have hair and may be a natural protection in the bad bacteria over growth.

Does anyone know anything about this?"

01/10/2012: Angeleyes from Houston, Texas, United States writes: "I have been reading a lot on here and I must say while writing this I am in tears to know that other women can relate to me. I have been suffering with bv for like three years and it has torn my life apart in so many ways. I'm only 16 and this has affected my social life as well as at home. I stopped going to school cause of my anxiety about the smell which led to truancy fines and bad grades. But now I am doing better and in homeschool. But If this would've never happened to me I know for a fact I would be in normal school able to socialize. & it's like doctors don't help me and my family doesn't understand how much this effects me no matter how much I tell them. It makes me feel dirty and at times I have felt worthless. I never imagined this would've happened to me in fact I had never heard of it until I went through it and am still going through it right now. I'm a virgin and sometimes I feel like I will never have sex or even get married because I don't want a man to discover this about me. But all the advice on here from you guys has encouraged me to keep trying to fight this sickness. & tomorrow I'm going to talk to my mom about going to the store and getting the various products you all suggested."

12/16/2011: Erin M from New Orleans, Louisiana writes: "I am starting my third round of Yeast & BV throwing party in my Vagina.

My doc prescribed me Flagyl (ugh) and cream for my yeast infection. Tonight (I went to the doc yestserday) I bought Garlique, Culturelle Probiotic and cranbery pills. My doc suggested that after this round that I should stick the Culturelle Probiotic up in my who-ha twice a week for six months.

Other changes:

I'm changing from the Pink Dove soap to the White Dove Soap

I am buying all new panties - WHITE cotton (I typically wear colored cotton panties).

One I HATE FLAGYL so much... so so soooo much.

Fun fact - I haven't had sex or any type of sexual activity for a year and a half and this started in August 2011.

I want this to be over."

I am a widowed mom of 2- come on! I could afford the copper iud and got it inserted then instantly got vd. I got the copper iud removed due to bleeding and saved up for the mirena. Got the mirena and instantly got the bv back. I've been living with it off and on for the last 3 yrs. It's been a long haul. Well ladies thanks for all the input I read this morning. I sure hope they help. I have tried the apple cider vinegar and it did help but didn't cure and the pills from the doc don't work and so tastes like sucking on a t3 lol my opinion, thank you so much. Heading to the natural health store good luck to all of you and 16 yr old in new zealand my heart goes out to you."

11/29/2011: Taimy from Union City, Nj replies: "Hello Ladies,

I read somewhere that wearing leggings too frequently or during warm weather can cause BV. I think that may be part of the cause as well. This summer was particularly warm and for some reason I liked wearing leggings all the time, and yes I was sexually active at that time too, but before I started having sex with my boyfriend, I was getting unusually moist in that area all the time, even when I wasn't wearing my leggings. So, it would be best to just wear leggings less frequently to prevent BV from coming back."

10/07/2011: Melis38 from Greenwich, Ct. writes: "Hi Ladies! I have lived with BV for 5 years now on and off. I am so grateful for this site, Yay Earth Clinic! I have been on antibiotics at least 3 times for BV and it was sometimes a long "cure" ( no sex) and short term "cure" (sex & condoms do me in) and my period makes BV worse, all the padding & tampon use. I have dealt with yeast infections for as long as I can remember. Then tonight I was doing some research and YAY- I found this site with a lot of great testimonies. So this fish smelly woman had all 3 products in her home, who knew that all I had to do was put all three to use at the same time?! Ha! I am on day one, I will report back!

1st step: Hydrogen Peroxide/ Bottled Water in a vagasil bottle. Held it in for 10 mins x2- SMELL GONE.

2nd step: Iron pill 125mg (may need to bump this up)

3rd step: 3 Acidophilus (1biliion)

4th step: tampon soaked in plain yogurt for 30mins.

Feeling better already, little itchy, but NO SMELL.

I will post an update in 7 days. Wishing all of you and me luck!! *I am cutting dairy & white flour out of my diet. :(

As a side note: I was reading that sometimes a DR will treat your partner with antibiotics too to ensure there's no recurrence of BV. I found that they are sometimes carriers from having sex with just one partner that has BV OR partners too close together- sex with one woman one night and then sex with you the next or a couple days after, with them it's sex linked. Now off to reading about how to make your "juices" taste better and not bitter- I have a yo-yo with that too. Sometimes sweet my husband tells me and sometimes bitter. Vegetarian diet I hear, with lots of pineapple & red grapes- Ok, later!"

08/11/2011: Keephopealive11 from Mcdonough, Ga writes: "100mg (Cleocin) suppositories, insert ech night @ bedtime was my last treatment. It only works for a little while, but couldn't complete the whole 7 day prescribed treatment because it caused yeast that almost ate me alive, omg! Had to use yeast suppositories (Terazol) & (Diflucan) for the yeast it was so bad after using Cleocin. Have tried almost everything as well on this site. GYN always prescribed Flagyl which I think I'm immuned to now. Stopped having intercourse for months that didn't help. I am a faithful condom user I believe in safe sex... Switched from latex to polyurethane condoms because I figured being allergic to latex was setting it off, that didn't help. I have a physical exam yearly anything you can name I've been tested for. I am a healthy 35 yr old woman that's within my BMI for my age & height, excercise day eat healthy. But can't shake this aweful BV mess. I hurts your womanhood BAD, and is so embarrassing especially to have intercourse. I avoid it as much as possible, to keep from being shame. I'm always self conscience of my body odor because of BV. I was married for 9 yrs and one time my husband thought I was sleeping around because of this. I had to take him to my GYN for him to explain this beast. I've been divorced 3 yrs now & had only 1 partner since my ex. Again always use condoms started out no problems no smell... Then it came back with a vengeance. So I try avoid my boyfriend as much as possible. Nothing works to cure this monster. I was in awe when I ran up on this site. so many victims & sufferers like me. Maybe one day a cure will break."

07/27/2011: Cocoadreamgirl from Charlotte, North Carolina, United States writes: "I went to the gynecologist recently this past Monday because last week I was experiencing some weird symptoms such as a slight burn when urinating some back right pain. I wasn't sure if this was all due to some medicine that I had took before but I went to the doctor about it to see if it was another UTI but those results have been negative and he suggested that I go to a gyno because I've never been to one before. In the April, I also had "small" pelvic inflammation and took antibiotics for that as well. And with all the antibiotics I've had, I haven't had a good experience with them at all! I have really bad heartburn & taking Prevacid to try and manage or treat it and antibiotics makes my heartburn & pain soooo much worse. I really don't want to have to go through that again and this new gyno that I went to says that it looks like I have bacterial vaginosis and prescribed Flagyl, twice a day for 5 days. After day one, my heartburn is crazy and I'm fearful of making it worse & creating more heartburn related problems. The burning has gone away now but came again after taking Flagyl, I've had a weird vaginal odor & discharge for years but never knew what it was. I'm just really worried and am going through a lot of problems now already and I'm not one who likes to put foreign things in my body (i. e pills. From what I've heard also, antibiotics creates more problems as well when they kill ALL the bacteria. I'm wondering if there's ANY natural, safe way to treat bacterial vaginosis?"

I also have the damp, smelly, itchy Vag and I've been told by physicians that it's all because of the BV. I am so concerned about this probem and I'm refusing to take any more antibiotic as I've read that it's effects both the good and the bad bacteria in the body. 07/15/2011: Beyond Frustrated from Seattle, Wa writes: "OK, I've been fighting BV for 7 months now. Did 3 rounds of MetroGel, 2 of clindamycin. I've done 2 rounds of Yin Care, and I've been taking femdophilus for 4 months. I've been doing boric acid suppositories for about 3 months, 1 every other night or so. My bf has been treated. I'm really running to wits end. The symptoms are much reduced with the boric acid tx, but if I don't do it every other day they come right back. I did it every night for 2 weeks originally. How long do I need to do this before its gone for good? Or am I just stuck doing this the rest of my life?"

07/13/2011: Curel from Louisville, Ky writes: "I suffered with BV for several years. I've heard that it's not sexually transmitted, but I bet it is. If you really think about it, how else could we have gotten it? I bet it came from coming in contact a men that give vaginal to anal sex without washing his penis before going back into the vagina. Seems to me that something was mixed and should not have been. I've read elsewhere that oral sex is a culprit as well. There is no cure and these Dr. 's aren't trying to cure it... The money is in medicine, not the cure. Please stop sticking things in your vagina such a metrogel, garlic, peroxide and the like... It dosen't work and it only masks the symptoms temporarily. The only thing that should be inserted into the vagina is a penis. BV has to be maintained. If you have an infection, there are two ways to get rid of it... Choose your drug of choice; antibiotic or natural remedy. Remember, nothing inserted into the vagina. After doing my research, I decdided to take the antibiotic route one last time (flagyl. Yes it destroys everything but I figured I needed to start with a clean slate.

After I got rid of the infection, I rebuilt what was destroyed... My good bacteria. Fem dolphilus is what I used to achieve this, 2 pills per day with the flagyl and two per day for three weeks thereafter. I refrained from sex for 30 days to give my system time to rebuild. Think reboot, refresh, restart. Once the healthy bacteria is restored, you should be fine to have sex. You will know this if your vaginal discharge is clear and taste sweet, or no taste at all (ask your partner to assist with this part). I maintain using a regemine with the femdolphilus, 1 pill per day. If I miss a day or two I'm fine because my body is already full of the good bacteria. If your bv flared up around the time of your period, double up your dose before and after as a precaution. Golden Seal and garlic supplements are good to implement into your maintainance as well. I had to eliminate meat, poultry and dairy unless it's from the amish farm since commercial farms animals are fed antibiotics. BV is a DISEASE and we have to treat it as such. There will be no magic cure, we have to learn to manage it."

06/22/2011: Rachel from Greenwood, In writes: "I have been struggling with BV for quite awhile now like the rest of you. I really appreciate everyone's comments, it's nice to know that we are not in this alone! I was prescribed flagyl when I was first told that I had BV, but I had no symptoms so of course after about the third day of nausea and headaches I discontinued my prescription, because like I said I had no symptoms and didn't even know what BV was. To my horror I am now stuck with this embarrassing monster called BV. I started eating plain nonfat yogurt with live cultures, and even inserted some vaginally, but saw no real progress. I just bought some probiotic pills and am now on my second day. I also drink the kefir yogurt, it is very good and I figure it can't hurt. I will keep you all posted on progress..

Also I found that if I do want to be intimate with my man, which I KNOW many of us have become embarrassed or even ashamed of doing anymore, I started using Pure Pleasure lubricant by PURE ROMANCE. It is scentless but for some reason when we use this there is NO smell AT ALL! It is not a long term fix and the smell will come back later but just thought it might help some of you ladies if you just need a break and want to feel sexy again and not embarrassed. Thanks for all the feedback guys!"

[WARNING!]  06/10/2011: Lady Garden from Manchester, England writes: "LADIES!!!

Do I have your full attention? Good.

Now listen, I can totally appreciate the feeling of desperation and the frustrating vicious cycle one can get into with BV, but I'm going to give you a few simple pointers which I believe can hopefully help prevent and eradicate this upsetting affliction. Like you (I imagine) I have spent hours desperately trawling the internet for new clues and possible cures in vein. But I now truly think I've found a solution which works for me and it goes as follows-

- STOP STICKING THINGS UP YOUR VAGES!!!!!

This includes a finger to check out the situation! I know it's a difficult habit to break and we all would love a quick fix, but you will only be making things worse by disturbing the EXTREMELY delicate balance of bacteria inside your vagina.

- STOP USING SOAP, SHOWER GELS AND FEMININE WASHES!!!!

I mean completely and on any part of your body except your hands after the toilet - and make sure you rinse well with water in case your hands come into contact with your vagina. Try to wash your hair separately/over the sink/bath so that none of the suds/chemicals or perfumes have a chance to slip down below and mess things up. Washing with water alone is all you really need, but use aqueous cream if you feel you need to wash with something (This can be used like a shower gel and is safe to use on the vagina) Always rinse everything well after washing.

- STOP USING TAMPONS!!!

Now I know some people believe that blood can cause BV, but actually I have seen a lot of evidence which suggests that it is in fact the tampons which cause it. They absorb the blood but also all the good bacteria along with it leaving you open to the dreaded overgrowth of the wrong stuff. They also leave fibers in the vaginal wall which cause irritation. If you've been using tampons for years then STOP NOW. Instead use a 'Mooncup' (google it! ). Seriously the best thing ever! Don't be squeamish or put off by this little gem - TRUST ME it will help. It doesn't take anything away except the blood and allows the vagina to operate in the way it should, undisturbed. I've been using a mooncup for 3 months and am still all clear! I cannot sing it's praises highly enough. Also you always have it with you and you save money by never having to buy tampons again - bonus!

- STOP BUYING THING (SUPPLEMENTS) FROM THE INTERNET WHICH CLAIM TO CURE THE PROBLEM.

Including that bloody book with the hard sell adverts! God it makes me angry! Anyone who wants to sell a cure like that must be dodgy as far as I'm concerned. If she knows what it's like to suffer with BV then she should be more than happy to help with free information! Grrrrrrr.

- BEFORE YOU IMPLEMENT ALL THIS GO TO YOUR DOCTOR AND GET A COURSE OF ANTIBIOTICS!!!

I know people feel that the medical profession have dropped the ball on this matter but I don't believe this to be true. Antibiotics is thus far the only proven way of getting rid of BV and it's important to start by taking some. Also some sexual health clinics have consultants who deal specifically with recurrent thrush and BV and will work with you to sort the problem. I believe this is a good option as all women are different and will respond differently to different treatments.

- AND FINALLY I JUST WANT TO SAY..

However awful this affliction can seem please don't forget that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Many women will experience BV at some point in their lives, you are not the first and you won't be the last. It's very important that you get help for this problem and don't simply give up and hide in a dark corner! BV is unpleasant and upsetting but it's not life threatening! And those who care about you will be understanding. Think about it - if you love someone do you give a damn about the way they smell? I don't believe so. Anyone who's ignorant enough make you feel bad about things that are beyond your control is not worth having around wouldn't you agree?

Good luck ladies, stay strong."

05/22/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "I am 53, have had baths all my life, actually we always choose hotels with a bathtub as I can't do without my soaking most nights. I have had the occasional case of BV which is cured with a single wash with water and ACV so.... I wouldn't say that baths are the cause of it. I also don't think that bath water is that dirty or else we would have to consider our bodies as dirty something I refuse to do although I do know more people who think like you. A bath can have many, many benefits although the relaxation which comes with it is maybe not something the modern person would be willing to experience. As far as using much more water than a shower I also refuse to believe that. In many cases a normal bath may even use less because while you shower you have no idea of how much water you use. In any case..... it is baths for me!"

04/14/2011: Uawildcats from 1555620, Va, Usa writes: "I recently saw my Doctor after my new boyfriend and I smelt a horrible fishy smell during sex (protected) and found out that I have VB. She gave me a script and after taking it a few days later my symptoms went away. It has been two weeks after taking all of the meds and the smell has come back. I had no clue I had VB except for the fishy smell that I kept smell which I blamed on my period. I normally have some discharge but again didn't think it was a concern. I do have issues with my stomach (gas, bloating, pain) as well as requent yeast infections which after countless nights of research all of the issues seem to come down to ph balance in my body. I have been reading some of the feedback from this site and have bought all the ingredience to douche and take the suppliments. I plan on doing it tonight. I am afraid to have sex again with my boyfriend due to the horrible smell that we encountered the last time. CAN anyone tell me if the smell has come back while having sex? I am embarrased to ask but I cannot put myself or my boyfriend through that nightmare again. THank you!!!"

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  03/10/2011: Cece from Northern, Nj writes: "I had BV at christmas time and the MetroGel seemed to cure it. however, the lining of the entry of my vagina often becomes raw after sex, seeming from the friction. the skin seems to heal after a few days but most often returns after having sex. could the MetroGel have caused the skin to become thin and less tolerable to intercourse? My Gyn gave me something to balance the vaginal environment, suppositories for 3 days. had sex 3 days after the last dose and again experienced the raw skin. had to stop intercourse b/c of the pain. no discharge or odor as others have shared, so I'm not sure if it's BV again or whether this is an awful side effect of the treatment? if anyone has a similar experience, please share."
