ASTHMA AND VACCINATION CONNECTION

Susan from Morden, Surrey writes: "I was just responding to the lady which wrote about her two year old having asthma. There is very strong evidence that having the vaccinations at birth leads to this in many children. My own children seemed to become continually ill after vaccination. I to0 have used the hydrogen peroxide method for ears and inhaling and am so pleased with results.I now have three grandchildren and none are vaccinated. They are so well and spring back from any cold they may catch. Vaccinations are basically evil and have never cured one thing on the planet that is fact.

Helen from Gisors, France writes: "THIS SITE IS GREAT. I just want to let you know, as an asthma sufferer and having problems with dental plaque, I can't believe the great therapies I'm finding today on your site (never heard of oil pulling - AMAZING!)

And - just had my first bit of ACV honey!

Just a note: I know someone selling uncooked honey at fleamarkets in the Orlando area - they actually have the hives. Many people are buying their honey because of the supposed benefits of helping their allergies.

This is such a necessary site for providing information for alternative treatments. As an asthma sufferer, I believe I was partially debilitated by steroid overmedication in the week I spent in the hospital after a severe crises. Since then I have had no ablity to deep breath, meaning: can't even yawn!

We must promote the safer (and less costly) alternatives. Thanks to you and thanks to all the kind and helpful posters.

[YEA] Pamela from Newtown, Pennsylvania writes: "After suffering from asthmatic symptoms for over twenty years from various seasonal pollens, mildew and mold, I have found a natural treatment for immediate relief! An ER nurse told me of this remedy after being treated for an extreme asthma attack.

Using 8-10 drops of Lobelia tincture, found in health food stores, mixed into a small glass of filtered water and taken when any tightness or wheezing begins will stop symptoms immediately. Follow the manufacture's directions. I use 5 drops in water every morning as a precaution when the pollen count is high. I don't need inhalation therapy anymore! I have used this remedy for about a year, so I've been through each season. It's been a relief not to use streoids!
FYI I still carry my rescue inhaler in my purse as a backup just in case and haven't needed it!

Removing dairy products will help to reduce mucous, also helping asthma symptoms. ACV will balance the body PH which is beneficial to the entire body. The problems most asthmatics have when breathing is not usung the full lung capacity. Depressed lung capacity will create an acidic environment."

ALOE VERA, FRESH

[YEA] Dianne from Tampa, Fl writes: "I apologize in advance for how lengthy this is. I am writing to let everyone know about the incredible benefits we have experienced with Aloe. About one and a half years ago our whole family came down with whooping cough. I decided to try Aloe, as a friend I had known had had great success with it for treating a serious prolonged cough and my mother also told me that in Colombia SA they would use a beaten concoction of Aloe and egg whites to treat whooping cough when she was a little girl. I reaearched Aloe on the internet, and though I didn't find the egg white recipe, I found many things Aloe is good for. It did work very well for whooping cough, especially helping to calm the nightime attacks, and a friend tried it for her daughter's whooping cough and had the same results. When I looked Aloe up on the internet, the treatment for the ailment that interested me the most was asthma. My son had been struggling with it for several years- not severe, but mostly sports induced and it greatly hindered his ability to play sports. I have tried most home remedies for asthama and have had so-so results. He began drinking it every day and by the end of the second month his attacks were completely gone. As long as he continues to drink it daily, he has no attacks. If he stops it entirely he begins having attacks again after a couple of months.

I found that one of the reasons that Aloe works for asthama (and other conditions like arthritis and lupus) is because it is anti-inflammatory. So, it keeps the airwarys from getting inflamed. Another reason it works is because it is also excellent for treating allergies which many times are a trigger for asthama. One of the reasons it works for allergies is because of the collagen it causes your body to produce which thickens the the mucus linings of your repiratory system and intestinal tract (heals leaky gut) which in turn helps you not to be so sensitive to allergens. Another reason is that it treats systemic candida which is usually the root of asthma and allergies.

The funny thing I noticed, which is not mentioned in any literature I have researched about Aloe, is that it has also helped with his stunted growth. My son is really short for his age and in the two years before taking Aloe, he only grew six inches total. Once he began taking Aloe for his asthma he grew almost six inches in one year. The growth spurt coincided exactly with time he first began the Aloe. I've tried my own "experiments" to see if his growth is related to the Aloe or if it is just his time to start growing, and I've found that if he has a period of a couple of months where he doesn't take his Aloe at all or only takes it once a week or so, he only grows about a quarter of an inch per month or less. When he takes it every single day, he grows about a half inch per month.

My father has been really inspired about my son's story and began taking it himself about four months ago for his prostate. He has been on prostate medication for the past ten years and still gets up to urinate about four times per night. He has tried different prostate medicines as well as his own share of home remedies, and nothing has worked. Well, after drinking Aloe daily for a couple of months, he was able to get off of his prostate medicine completly. Now he only gets up once or twice per night and he's not on any prostate medecine.

I've heard some people make some type of Aloe tea infusion, but the way we take Aloe is this: We buy a fresh Aloe stalk from the produce section of the grocery store. It has to be at least fourteen inches long, or I've read it's not as beneficial. The Aloe has to be nice and firm. Don't use it if it is soft and squishy as it is too old and may actually agravate some candida problems. We slice off a three inch section from the base and peel off the thick green skin with a paring knife and discard it. We then take the gel (from the three inch section) and gently blend it with a drink mixer with some orange juice for palatability. The less you blend, the better as you don't want to destroy the beneficial properties.

You can buy bottled Aloe, but I DON'T RECOMMEND IT! While there may be some good Aloe products out there, I've read that sometimes the bottle can say 100% Aloe and it is actually 95% water, but for some reason the FDA allows them to say 100% Aloe even if it isn't. The other reason is that bottled Aloe is usually pastuerized which kills many of the beneficial enzymes that make Aloe so effective. Fresher is always better with Aloe.

Chas from Cincinnati, OH writes: "I have tried various treatments throughout my life. I have exercise triggered asthma. I am going to try ACV, Magnesium and Echinacea. I have had two serious attacks this past month for some unknown reason. My throat becomes very constricted to the point that it feels like strep throat. Then my chest tightens. I begin feeling really tired from improper breathing. Then my lungs start coughing up the typical asthma mucous, with a persistant, dry-like cough for days after. I have been very frustrated because I want to exercise and stay fit. I haven't been able to afford an allergy test to diagnose exactly what allergens are causing my attacks. But I hope this next combination of ACV, Magnesium and Echinacea will help."

Greenbeanz39 from Clarkston, Washington writes: "I have a 7 year old neighbor with asthma. She has been really ill for the last week staying up at night with a persistent unproductive cough. She coughs to the point of vomiting. Her parents have her on Claritin and give her breathing treatments during the day and at night. I would like to send them home with my vaporizer, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, rosemary oil that I add to coconut oil that they can rub on her chest and feet and in the vaporizer as well. Maybe some herbal tea with honey, probably can't sneak any ACV into it though as she is very picky. Does anyone have any more ideas? I have had the dry cough too for a week and take ACV with water everyday and honey when I have a cough attack, but this only works temporarily. Any advice would be so welcome, I can only imagine that this kid is so miserable. I need some help before her parents put her on steroids!"

I have been trying these natural remedies but so far I don't think any of them have really worked. I took the apple cider and it didn't work, I have been taking vitamin b-12(methyl) but I don't know if its working yet. I tried eualyptus oil but it worked just briefly. I stopped taking my allergie shots because I didn't feel they were working. On average every 2 months I go to the ER. Question: Should I be drinking the ACV when I am feeling good? I also heard about Boswellia Extract, I heard that is good, but I know it is good for your joints also, should I take this? I have also tried a hot shower, eating fruits, any suggestions would be helpful, thank you."

[YEA] Susan from Inland Empire, Ca writes: "My 10yr old son who wheezes with breathing in cold air had an attack and seemed to worsen as the day progressed. Labored breathing with wheezing sounds, scary. I already had a nebulizer machine in the house from years past using albuterol mixtures. I placed about 1/3 cup of water in a separate container and one drop of 35% food grade H202. Stirred it and then filled to capacity the nebulizer holding cup. After about 20 minutes he seemed to breath alot easier but not 100% to normal. He slept for an hour then was able to get up and guess what? No heavy breathing! A little wheezing but not as much as before. I was hesitant to try the H2O2 as so many precautions and warnings. I'm glad I only put one drop into a separate container with more water. One drop in the nebulizer cup (about 2 tablespoons capacity) would have been way too much."

[WARNING!] Clarice from Boston, MA, USA writes: "This is not just a Big Fat Nay for salt pipe inhalation therapy for asthma, but a complaint about the poster who is pumping their "Salt Rocks" site under the very very thin guise of "offering extensive compiled information" (which is no different than any other site selling salt rock pipes).

I actually went to the Salt Rocks site that the poster put in their post and bought two salt pipes for two asthmatics in the family. The people involved are both non-smoking males, one 43 years and the other 58 years, both have low-sodium diets that generally exclude asthma-trigger allergens; the younger is a vegetarian, the elder is not. I got the pipes at Christmas time, and three months later, no improvement or help whatsoever in either person, and in fact, the elder person is worse, now having to have a heftier dose of Advair. And, while all the "information" promises no increase in blood pressure, blood pressure was elevated in the elder, and in the younger blood pressure went through the roof after starting salt inhalation; both cases higher than when taking the Advair (which is known to elevate blood pressure).

So, consider this a double nay for salt pipes, both of which have been relegated to the trash bin.

If it sounds too good to be true, guess what children, it is...except for the person selling it, of course."

ASTHMA INHALERS AND MENTAL DISTURBANCES

[WARNING!] Frank W. from New York City, NY writes: "One of my relatives was recently diagnosed with steroid psychosis a year and a half after taking a steroid asthma inhaler for asthma (on and off). His family never knew, since he kept his delusions secret. However, it eventually came out in other ways. Please watch for this in your own family and friends who take steroids for asthma. I had never heard about side effects from asthma inhalers until now, but apparently its well known among psychiatrists.

Here is some information I found while researching the subject. I hope it helps someone:

"Asthma inhalers and nasal sprays that contain steroids are well known to cause psychiatric side effects such as depression, mood swings, aggression, irritability and insomnia. However, in rare cases, they can also cause a side effect called "steroid psychosis". People with steroid psychosis lose contact with reality and can appear to be crazy or insane. Symptoms of steroid psychosis can involve anything from incoherent babbling to psychotic delusions and hallucinations. The person may need to be hospitalized and treated with anti-psychotic drugs. The condition is usually reversible, although it may take weeks, months, or even longer to resolve. Steroid psychosis is rare with steroid asthma inhalers and nasal sprays (1 in 10,000 chance). However, it is much more common with oral (pills) steroid drugs, such as prednisone.

Examples of steroid asthma inhalers are Pulmicort, Flovent and Advair. Examples of steroid nasal sprays are Nasonex, Nasacort, Rhinocort and Flonase.

Steroid psychosis can begin with a feeling of being 'hyped up'. This can be followed by anxiety, tachycardia (rapid heart beat), pressured speech, increased blood pressure, loss of potassium, severe insomnia, depression, hallucinations, memory problems and delusions. The person can appear to have serious mental illness, such as bipolar mania or schizophrenia, which are mental illnesses characterized by the loss of contact with reality. People with steroid psychosis may experience suicidal or homicidal ideation (thoughts of killing themselves or others). They can have delusions of grandeur (a false belief they have great importance), such as believing they are Jesus Christ. They can also have paranoid delusions (a false belief they are being persecuted), such as believing they are the victim of a conspiracy. Also, the person may experience hallucinations or visual illusions. The hallucinations can be visual (seeing people or things that are not there), or auditory (hearing voices). Steroid psychosis can leave a person disabled and unable to work.

Note that the steroids in asthma inhalers are called "corticosteroids", and should not be confused with the steroids used by body builders called "anabolic steroids".

[YEA] Ellie from Charlotte, NC/USA writes: "My asthma is not severe yet I've required daily doses of Flovent and occasional use of a fast acting inhaler for years. Being without, even for a day is a concern. Recently I ran out of my Flovent and simply did not have the $180 necessary to purchase a refill. The congestion in my lungs began right away. Each day was worse. My lungs were burning and I knew I'd wind up in the emergency room soon if I didn't do something.

I searched the internet for any home remedy that would buy me some time and relief until I could purchase medication. There were hundreds, most of which required me to harvest it myself on the bottom of the ocean or something. Then I found this site with the ridiculous suggestion to consume apple cider vinegar! This made no sense but I was desperate, it was late, I was miserable, and I had some in my kitchen cabinet.
The first night I drank 2 TBS and slept through the night without waking to use my emergency inhaler. I hadn't done that in days.

The next week and a half I used 1 TBS two to three times a day mixed in juice, holding my nose, followed by chocolate (or raspberries which I suddenly developed a craving for) and I've NEVER used anything that broke up my congestion faster. EVER.

I've now gone three weeks without the use of an inhaler at all! I've been on medication for years! I'm still stunned.

Thank goodness I found this site.

[YEA] TOmmy from Tallahassee, FL writes: "I have grown up with severe asthma and while in the hospital for a collapsed lung, I decided to read up on the long term effects of using Advair. After my reading, I decided to wean myself from this prescription and focus on exercise and diet changes, which within a month I didn't use my Advair nor Albuterol. Until I had a reaction to my girlfriends dog last Christmas. I just couldn't breath so I rushed back to my Dr and the albuterol....and after a month, I backed away completely. Until tonight when I went to my now fiance's parents house....with the same dog. I am going add Apple Cider Vinegar to my diet, but since I didn't have any at home, I pulled out the honey. Added several teaspoons to a 1/4 cup of water and heated it up in the microwave for a nice Honey Steamer. It put me at ease for about 30 minutes. I was comfortable enough to try another suggestion from this site...so I just cut up a large Florida lemon and ate it, adding a little bit of the juice to my honey water...hmmm I am now breathing again, I think I will finally go to bed (6am)I think I might eat another lemon for breakfast."

[YEA] Fluffy from Warwick, RI writes: "First of all, thank you Earth Clinic. It was through here I first saw a reference to salt inhalation as a remedy/relief from Asthma.

It was from KR's post that I started researching salt pipes and salt inhalation. Sounded interesting, so I made one (how to make your own below.)

My brother started suffering from Asthma about ten years ago, and started with serious prescription meds about six years ago -- and he doesn't like the side effects (or the idea of inhaling steroids twice daily) at all. To make things worse, he was wounded in Vietnam, and as a result of surgery to remove the shrapnel, he is missing part of a lung, and his diaphragm doesn't function well, ergo, bad breathing to begin with. While retraining himself to breathe correctly has had minimal success, breathing with the diaphragm is exceptionally difficult and painful for him. We have handled as best we can the environmental issues (taking up carpeting, not using the wood stove, installing air cleaner, shaving the cats...)but that has only helped minimally. So, we started searching for INEXPENSIVE alternative and natural treatments (that for the most part can be paid for by food stamps).

After looking at a plethora of salt pipe websites, I thought it would be easy enough to make, and it is. I have a large mini-teapot collection, and chose a nicely shaped porcelain pot (size would be 1-cup, or it would be considered a child's or doll's teapot)where the spout curves a little and sits low on the pot. Strainer holes are preferable, but can be worked around by stuffing a little sterile gauze in the bottom of the spout. I then went to my cupboard, and sure enough, there in the back was a box of Morton's rock salt which I use in the ice cream maker. Dump salt into pot, and bingo, a salt pipe. If the steam hole in the lid doesn't allow enough air, manipulate the lid a little with your hand/fingers. Use the spout as your mouth inhaler. It takes a little practice to consistently breathe in thru mouth, out thru nose, as there is no valve to prevent contaminated air going back into the pot/pipe. But, just starting with a little salt, if it becomes contaminated, just dump it out. Now, I mention Morton's specifically, because I tested it. One of the inhaler sites stated that THEIR salts were the best because everybody else's had fluoride or chlorine or other nasty stuff in it. I dissolved some salt in distilled water and tested it with a water test kit I got from my garden center. The ppm levels of "stuff" were somewhat-to-significantly lower than are naturally found in my municipal drinking water, so I don't see any big problem. Just a word of caution about mini-tea pots...porcelain and china are no-brainers; ceramic, stoneware, or other pottery may not have suitable glazes, or glazes that may react with the salt so dissolve 2 tbsp of salt with 6 ounces hot-to-boiling water and see if there is any discoloration after 2-3 hours; and, of course, NEVER use a metal pot, even if it has a porcelain finish. A little teapot that may be labeled "not suitable for use" more than likely means the glazing is not suitable for food-stuffs or tea tannins (which can leach out contaminants), however, it simply may mean the pot is not be able to stand up to heat, so do a test first, and if there are any problems, don't use it.

In any event, it has been 3 weeks now at generally two 15-minute sessions daily and a few minutes when he feels like an attack might be coming on. He began to feel better after a couple of days, with steady improvement. My bro has used his Advair only five times (instead of twice daily), and his inhaler only a few times. Overall, he feels an improvement in his breathing, and if nothing else, he is able to sleep more soundly at night. I am convinced that were he able to do breathing exercises properly that would even help more, but that's going to take time.

Based on results thus far (with zero side effects other than an occasional salty taste in the mouth), we certainly would recommend trying it.

BTW....just kidding about shaving the cats."

ENVIRONMENTAL TRIGGERS

[SIDE EFFECTS] Lauren from Memphis, TN writes: "I just wanted to make all those asthma sufferers, including Liz from Wisconcin, a little more aware of their environment and possible triggers that they may not be aware of. I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, and developed asthma 18 years ago, when I moved into my sister's new townhouse. I thought her cats were making me sick, including the asthma, but they weren't. It was the townhouse.

Many elements of our home and work environments are overloaded with synthetic chemicals, which are the main trigger for my asthma. For example, carpeting is processed with a number of toxic synthetic chemicals, including formaldehyde. Much of the manufactured furniture is made of composite woods, which also contain formaldehyde and toxic glues. Our interior environments are loaded with many synthetic chemicals, so I suggest you learn more about them. Many manufactured components take months or years to outgas and can silently make a person ill. Furniture, carpet, cleaning solutions, health and beauty aids are loaded. Fragrances, including perfumes and air fresheners are nothing but synthetic chemicals that you and your family are breathing in, and those toxins are building up in your bodies.

With my condition, I try to be very careful about what comes into my home, as it is my safe place. Recently, I purchased a dehumidifier for our basement, which produced some kind of gas that floated up through the floor boards (I couldn't smell anything). It never occured to me that this would be a dangerous piece of equipment, but it was. Just beware of the unknown....four years ago, I took doxycycline which caused a severe asthma episode that lasted for 4 or 5 weeks. You never know!

In addition to the asthma I am currently experiencing,I have also had an annoying cough at night. That's what brought me to Earthclinic tonight, as I needed to deal with this. I figured the most effective concoction would include AVC..I wasn't dissapointed! I can tolerate ACV, but don't like honey, so I heated 2 Tablespoons of ACV, 1 Tablespoon each of honey and lemon in 1 cup of water. With the first sip, it calmed my cough and I think it has eased my asthma some too. This mixture was almost tasty, and I will definitely keep it up! Thanks everyone!"

[YEA] Liz from West Bend, WI writes: "I developed asthma when I was pregnant with my daughter about two years ago. I think I had it for much longer as dust has always bothered me and caused me to have lung infections. I was taking meds, not religiously, but on occausion for the first year. I finally decided to see an allergist in March 08, and had reactions to the 6 most common indoor and outdoor allergens in varying degrees. I know the scale is from 0-4 and I'm a 4 for dust and cat dander. I'm also allergic to different tree pollens. I was trying to find the sheet that listed them all but I'm not sure where it is.

I believe my asthma is caused by my allergies and have been oil pulling two times a day for 5min, taking 2TBS raw organic ACV twice a day with 1/8tea of baking soda, 1 TBS raw honey, and have also recently added 1tea cinnamon and 1-2 tea lemon juice. I know these things help with my overall health but they haven't largely helped my asthma.

I also drink tea on a regular basis and have tried peppermint, licorice root, green tea, black teas. They seem to help while I'm drinking it but the effects are short lived.

I have also tried green tea with ACV and Cayenne pep during a cold, which did seem to help but didn't completely eradicate it.

Basically I'm looking for other alternative treatments to try. I have been having asthma attacks more frequently and I'm not sure if its my indoor air quality or what. I live in WI and its getting cold so all the windows are closed. I want to buy more plants to help filter the air which I think would help some.

I was also thinking of trying to do a clinical study by Dr.David Hahn. He believes that asthma is caused by a bacteria in your lungs I posted the links to his website under a post for azithromycin. I think that may be promising for some asthma sufferers.

Also,my asthma acts up when I excercise (which I try to do every day) and the highest I can blow on a peak flow meter is 300, lowest I get when having an attack is 90-150. Avg person gets between 400-700. My husband can max my device out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have twin boys and a daugther all under the age of five and my asthma takes my life away. Plus, I want to be able to help my kids if they develope asthma/allergies.
Thanks for your time,
Liz

[YEA] Betty from Plant City, Florida writes: "Raw organic apple cider vinegar has helped me so much, I feel like a vinegar evangelist!! I tell everyone about it. I heard about it in 2003 after having been in the hospital for chronic broncitis three times that year and had develped asthma, was on a nebulizer and inhalers. I have always had allergies.

After I started the raw vinegar mixed with raw honey - I have been drinking 1/4 cup mixed with a glass of water at night.- I have lost 55 pounds, which I learned was due to the vinegar daily - have not had bronchitis or asthma and have quit taking acid reflex meds, lung meds, singular for asthma, don't need the nebulizer or inhalers. I also quit taking nexium and just learned it is also good for leg cramps. I am a much healther person. I take mine at night, but think I will try taking smaller doses three times a day. Even my lung doctor agreed ACV was good for your lungs. He said his Mother raised them on it for sore throats and colds. Too bad the drug companies don't agree. Thanks for your site
