Angular Chelitis Remedies
"Angular cheilitis (also called perleche, cheilosis or angular stomatitis) is an inflammatory lesion at the labial commissure, or corner of the mouth, and often occurs bilaterally. The condition manifests as deep cracks or splits. In severe cases, the splits can bleed when the mouth is opened and shallow ulcers or a crust may form.
Although the disease has an unknown etiology, the sores of angular cheilitis may become infected by the fungus Candida albicans (thrush), or other pathogens. Studies have linked the initial onset with nutritional deficiencies, namely riboflavin vitamin B2 and iron deficiency anemia, which in turn may be evidence of poor diets or malnutrition (e.g. celiac disease). Zinc deficiency has also been associated with angular cheilitis." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angular_cheilitis

[YEA] 07/31/2010: Catscradle123 from New York, NY writes: "Bee Propolis cured my Angular Cheilitis. I had a painful rip at the corner of my mouth that would not go away for a week. Last night, I added three drops of Bee Propolis tincture and slept on it. The next morning (today) the rip healed significantly. Will keep adding drops today!"
Replies09/13/2010: Jack from Boston, Ma replies: "The Answer - This took some digging as to the cause, but first I will tell you the cure:Rinse & topical: For morning before work routine rinse with 1 cup water 3 tblsp white vinegar 1 tsp salt, then take cue tip wetted with hydrogen peroxide and dab infected area & then spread antibiotic ointment that is in a petroleum base over lips and affected area.
For night do same rinse, dab with peroxide and then pat infected area with baking soda and allow to dry - leaving it on over night. The baking soda more than anything I believe to help keep area dry. Don't go picking at the area or rubbing it with the cue tip or your fingers. Actually, just try to leave it alone.
By morning 2 you will be on road to recovery. Now along with this take a multi vitamin, a b-complex, folic acid, b-12, iron, vitamin C and acidophilus supplements. Take one acidophilus with each meal.
Now the cause: sucralose (artificial sweetener). A Duke U study whose results were disqualified (squashed) found that in tests with rats that Sucrlose taken in acceptable quantities proportional to their size decreased good intestinal bacteria by 50% by day 10. So, so much for the immune system; let the canker sores and angular chelitis begin! Let the Candida run wild! I was having 2 glasses of wine a day that kept the bad bacteria at bay but I stopped drinking and within two weeks things went out of control. For the 3 months prior to that I had been religiously eating Activia Lite which contains sucralose. The cracks in the corners of my mouth on a few occasion during that time tried to get a foothold but the wine stopped that from happening. I have now switched over to that Greek yogurt (plain). I take my vitamins. I still do not drink but I will soon now that the cankers & angular chelitis are behind me. Oh, and I should point out that the sucralose had other effects on me. I was having bad insomnia and couldn't figure what the heck was going on. I would say within 48 hours of stopping the Activia my sleep returned and the Chilitis started to improved. I guarantee also the sleep had a big effect on helping me get cured of the chelitis. I also had an odd rash on my torso. All this crazy stuff. I really thought it was from alcohol dependence though I really hadn't been drinking enough or for that long to have any problems.
In the end I think in an odd way the alcohol was keeping this thing at bay. It was crazy, I hadn't had a canker in a couple of years and I had never had angular chelitis before - and who knows what that rash on my torso was all about. I thought it was from my tried & true laundry detergent that suddenly decided to turn on me. I have vowed never to consume any artificial sweeteners again. I have almost cut sweets of any kind out of my diet. I have switched to whole grains, lightly steamed vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruit, and healthy protein sources. No more simple carbs. I was always kind of healthy but now I'm a little over-the-top but why not."
[NAY] 07/11/2011: Woundcarept from Tucson, Az replies: "I just tried Jack from Boston, MA's rinse with baking soda and found my lips burning, burning, burning. I am a medical practitioner who specializes in wound care and am pretty open to alternative methods of healing. I also have a pretty high tolerance for discomfort and am willing to try pretty much anything at this point to assist with my itching, cracked lips (unsure if it's angular chelitis or really tiny cold sores d/t what I believe is exposure to gluten--undiagnosed celiac disease is my suspicion at this time). When the burning continued, I decided to wipe everything off my lips, soothe them with an ice cube... And they feel so much better now.Unfortunately, I didn't have a good experience with this remedy and wasn't able to give it much time to work. Perhaps I'll try it on a smaller patch... Or try the other suggestions. As most of us know, for successful results, it's best to treat the cause and not the symptoms."

CASTOR OIL AND BAKING SODA

[YEA] 01/15/2010: Bryan Martin from Dayton, Ohio writes: "I have suffered with angular cheilitis for many years. I have tried many things including, antibacterial cream, cortisone cream, fungal cream, tea tree oil, oregano oil, hydrogen peroxide and more. I had some success with tea tree at keeping the sores from getting larger but nothing has helped to diminish them until now. My angular cheilitis was a pretty severe case with a raise "sore" at the corner of my lips that was at least the size of a dime, and then raised up somewhere between 5-7 millimeters. The condition has really hurt my self esteem. Thankfully I finally found a way to rid myself of angular cheilitis. I made a paste of castor oil and baking soda and applied it over night. After just one application my angular cheilitis was reduced by half, several more and it now almost completely gone! This remedy has been easy, cheap, and it's the only thing I have ever found to be effective. Just mix some castor oil and baking soda until it makes a thick heavy paste and leave on over night. It will burn some but it really really really helps!"
Replies01/20/2010: Soremouth from Vancouver, Bc replies: "Has anyone else tried this? I bought Oil of Oregano for my angular chelitis and it's now really bad. Before I had a sore, red rash in the corners of my mouth. Today, my skin is completely split and open on both sides of my mouth. I want to try the castor oil & baking soda but I don't want to make things even WORSE."
[NAY] 05/12/2010: Tamara from Des Plaines, Il replies: "Castor Oil and Baking Soda didn't help me heal my mouth cracks. I think it just made it worse. May be I wrong. I started taking multivitamin and the cracks started to heal."
10/30/2011: Lkslive from Vancouver, Bc /canada replies: "Try marigold cream - this helps with healing and with bacteria etc. You may also be in a vitamin b or e deficiency- take a good multi along with vit e and b complex-b12 and folic acid this regime daily will help."

DAKIN'S SOLUTION

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 11/16/2009: K.A. from Cape Town, Rsa writes: "First, thank you all a million --and especially to Ted from Thailand, as my terrible oral Thrush started going away as soon as I started his protocol. Very severe case, as I had no idea what it was and treated it with Corsodyl mouthwash for bacteria.
But, the angular chelitis on my lip corners has been very resistant. That is where the infection started, but until the Thrush went inside my mouth and turned white, I thought I had cut myself with dental floss, or burned my mouth on coffee and maybe it had gotten infected--therefore, I treated it incorrectly until the entire inside of my mouth, tongue, tonsil area and palate were covered with white plaques, and the corners of my lips cracked so that I could not talk for 4 days-- until I started the Apple Cider Vinegar, Hydrogen Peroxide anti yeast diet heavy acidoplilus.
Even when this was clearing up well, the lip corners did not respond. That is when I tried OTC antifungal (some result), tea tree oil (no result), lavender oil (very soothing but no rememdy)...the application of ACV did not help, nor did (name brand) lip ointment with alantoin (sp?) to reduce keratin formation.
But, this Dakins Solution has worked a treat...so I wanted to let you all know, in case you have a similar problem.
I found a recipe for Dakins Solution: 1/4tsp household bleach (sodium hypochlorite only) in 1/2 cup water. Pinch of Bicarbonate of Soda optional.
I rinsed with this and within a few hours the inflammation was noticably reduced, and the cracks were less "oozy". For the first time, I feel that my lips are actually healing, rather than just not getting worse.
I wanted to put a little lavender oil on them, but I am just holding off and letting them dry out a bit.
I will continue on the anti-yeast diet and ACV, H202 tonic--because I have had such a bad sinus for years that I think I might have had a long-term yeast problem and not known it. I catch every flu around, and my sinus infection is chronic and I don't treat with antibiotics anymore for fear of developing resistance.
BTW...
Does anyone know how to get the Allantoin that reduces keratin formation in some other form other than that popular ointment? It is very expensive here in Africa, and it works so great on anything chapped or scar forming?
Thank you all again for all the great advice and I have sent this site to several friends, whom I know will love it!"

My dog has had cracks at the corner of her mouth and her lips are inflammed and they have been that way for over a year. I have had her to three different vets and they don't know what it is but they want to give her prednisone. I'm not happy with that. One vet did say it was a yeast or fungus but hasn't been able to help and I just go around and around trying everything I can think of. I think I am going to try the Dakin's Solution on her. I have nothing to lose. I'm wondering if a dog could have angular chelitis. Thanks for giving the instructions for making the solution. I do have a question though. Did it really hurt when you put it on open cracks. Her mouth is really pretty raw. Thanks again."
05/01/2011: Jmiller46656 from Troy, Al replies: "Jack from Boston, thank you so much for your post. I've suffered this condition for four years. I research angular chelitis daily, and have read almost every and any blog about it. Your comments are among the few I've found of people who are actually trying to help others altruisticly. From my personal experience one of the worst scammers on the net is Katherine Sage. She used to charge from 70-90 dollars for her "so called" cure, but now is charging around 30$. This cure I paid 70 dollars for about two years ago was to clean the affected area with anti-bacterial soap then apply vaseline. What a scam! I hope she burns in hell for taking advantge of people. Enough of my ranting. Your post was a breath of fresh air compared to the many out there. They all say the same thing. Apreciate it."

Only 4 years ago I finally realized my toothpastes are doing it to me (having changed many over the years). For some time Crest whitening Scope worked just fine, now - I am getting a reaction to that too. My lips dry out and peel all the time even with herbal toothpastes like Tom's, Peelu, Vicco (some being Ayurvedic)!!! Please help with a TOOTHPASTE SUGGESTION that does not harm lips. Currently I am brushing my teeth with Baking Soda, Orange Grind & Indian Mustard Oil. This isn't helping much either!!! I've also started with Zinc & B2 supplement. Let's see what happens. Also bought Lysine cold sore treatment today. Will report later how it goes."

12/22/2008: Terry from Westport, Connecticut replies: "I have had this many times in my life. I believe it to be an allergic reaction to some preservative in foods, but I haven't yet pinpointed which preservative it is. Some brands of hot sauce cause this to happen. I also just bought a new brand of toothpaste last week at the grocery store from Arm & Hammer and within an hour the right corner of my mouth started to peel. The toothpaste had touched my lips when I was brushing. It's happened before with toothpaste so I need to use natural brands - I just forgot until it happened yet again! The fluoride isn't causing it because the natural brands I use like Tom's of Maine have fluoride in them (ha, not so natural!). I am guessing you are also having an allergic reaction to either food or toothpaste and it's something you keep using! One more trigger for me is certain brands of lipstick. I don't know what they put in them but it causes the cracking and dryness at the corners. Let us know what you discover!"
12/23/2008: Amanda from Trenton, Ontario replies: "Dear Terry: please read up on fluoride. It is a toxic Chemical left over from the smelting of aluminum. It is used as a poison. It has the ability to attach to the DNA in the place of hydrogen atoms (simular atomic structor but more reactive). If your aim is to kill oral bacteria you would do better to rinse your mouth with clove tea!"

HEAVY METAL DETOX
10/20/2009: 007rg from Sherman Oaks, Ca writes: "Heavy metal detox: i've been battling angular cheilitis for years... think it started when i was pretty young and got a mouthful of silver/mercury amalgams. from all of my research which has been extensive bc need to finally get rid of angular cheilitis forever. turns out that heavy metal poisoning causes the body to farm candida to bind with the metals which in turn can cause angular cheilitis. basically get rid of the metals in your system then start to eliminate candida. they seem to go hand in hand with me. also caused health issues like hyperthyroidism, loss of hair, brain fog, muscle & joint aches... i've recently removed 80% of my amalgams and waiting for financial stability to get rid of the rest. wish the process wasn't so expensive but so far it's helping. hope this info saves some of you a lot of time and despair."
Replies12/09/2011: Bcutts from Portland, Or replies: "You do realize that once an amalgam filling is placed in your mouth, it only releases MINISCULE amounts of mercury? You would get more mercury from eating a tuna fish sandwich than you ever would from all your amalgams over a lifetime. When the amalgam is placed, and when it is removed are the biggest times of risk for ingesting amalgam. Bits can escape the assistants suction (I know, I am one) and as vigilant as we are, we can't catch it all. In fact, when an amalgam is being removed, it's ground into a fine dust all over your mouth, which of course is impossible to completely remove. Don't swallow, haha! Basically, don't bother getting your amalgams removed. They last years longer than composites (unless you're replacing with gold inlays, which could last forever) and you'll be exposing yourself to MUCH more mercury than you would by leaving them there."
12/10/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "As an ex-dental assistant I used to fall for that line too. Until I started having so many problems that I realized there was only one other option left, it had to be the fillings. Don't listen to your dentist who says you get more mercury from a tuna sandwich then you do from a filling over your lifetime. They are just as misinformed as you. Amalgams break down and over the life of the filling (usually 10 to 15 years) little tiny toxic pieces break away. At that point they aren't getting sucked into the suction from the dental assistant they are going into your body and usually parking somewhere deep in your cells to cause havic with your health. If you take charge and have the ability to remove your amalgam fillings I say do so. You will be toxic for a shorter time than if you leave them and let them slowly deteriorate. Not to mention if fillings last for 10 to 15 years guess what happens when its time for a new one. The dentist drills the old one out causing toxic fumes to cause problems for the dentist, assistant, and definatly for you the patient. So go for it now and get rid of the poison while your still healthy enough to detox the mercury from your system.I used to sit there and listen to my boss who was a dentist give the same bs line to every patient who asked. I feel terrible having been a part of that now that I know differently. I fell for it too. Dentist's do not perform any studies on mercury and how much goes into your system through your life time. Nor does anyone else for that matter. They are using data from short term studies. There is no way to get that information on a human without constantly testing the persons blood, hair, saliva, urine, etc... over thier entire lifetime.
If you are ill and you don't know why and you have amalgams I would suspect them if I were you. Composites are much stronger now days than they used to be. You can even get composite build ups for crowns that last almost as long as amalgams. There are also inlays and onlays as well as glass ionomer fillings. Any dentist who tells you that your health is not in danger by getting the amalgam fillings is just as much a fool as the rest of us. Many dentists are becoming aware of this. You can google Biological Dentistry to find a dentist who removes amalgams in a safe manner. They have all been trained on the dangers to them, you, and thier employees so they practice safe removal. Here is a site to check out.

[YEA] 12/16/2009: Barbara from Toronto, On, Canada writes: "I occasionally get cracking in the corners of my mouth whenever I eat any foods with vinegar or soy sauce. This is because they both contain yeast which causes chelitis. I avoid using these ingredients and all yeast but sometimes it's unavoidable. I also get redness above my upper lip.
For the cracking I use a little of the cream I get with my yeast infection treatment capsules. It is a miconazole 2% cream. Within 1 -4 days the cracking and redness is gone without fail. It really works. I apply it morning and night.
For my upper lip redness I use a common clotrimazole cream used for athelete's foot and an antibacterial non steroid cream from my doctor and apply them both to the affected area four times a day. I also tone my face and upper lip with pure witch hazel and a few drops of tea tree oil every second night or so, rinse it off and use no moisturizer. I also avoid all yeast foods. This works after about 4-10 days and after a few treatments of this the redness now is virtually gone. It will return if I eat more yeast containing or causing foods but now goes away on its own after a few days when I stop. I will appply the atheletes foot cream a couple of times a day to speed up the process.
I also eat a very healthy vegan diet with no sugar, salt or yeast and take a vegan yeast and salt free vitamin and 2 500 mg l lysine capsulses a few times a month. This all has really done the trick for me and I can now happily say I am no longer bothered by this upsetting ailment."

The crustiness just kept getting worse and it hurt to open my mouth. I actually figured out why I was getting this problem, which was due to a new mouthwash that had all kinds of really strong essential oils in it. The mouthwash works great on my mouth and gums, but the oils seep out of my mouth and into the corners causing severe irritation, redness and crustiness. I finally tried using Carmex, I had a little jar in my medicine cabinet from like 15 years ago. The crust peeled off within hours and it was healed completely after a day or two. The little tub version works, not the tube kind though."

[YEA] 12/26/2011: Alison from Syracuse, New York, Usa writes: "I started to have cracks in the corner of my mouth about 3 months ago. These cracks were not only annoying and painful, but embarrassing as well. They seemed to appear out of nowhere and for no reason. I would literally begin bleeding from the corner of my mouth sometimes, and there seemed to be nothing I could do to heal it. Every time that I opened my mouth wide to eat I could feel the corner of it splitting. I was completely unsure of the cause of this issue. I thought that I may of had some strange case of a cold sore. Therefore, I began soaking these cracks with organic Apple Cider Vinegar (since it seems to be the "cure-all" for everything. ) However, the ACV did not seem to help. In fact, the cracks started looking worse and began to scab over. At first, I thought that maybe the scabbing was a healing process and that the cracks would soon be gone. Nevertheless, even if they began to heal, inevitably they would split again. I began researching my condition and from pictures and related articles I determined that these cracks in my mouth were not cold sores at all, but in fact Angular Chelitis. I learned that angular chelitis can be caused by a few different things, but is common to those who have a Vitamin B deficiency. I tried many natural remedies that I found on various holistic websites, but nothing seemed to help. Finally, I bought a Vitamin B complex from a local health food store. I have been taking this vitamin for merely 2 weeks and my angular chelitis has not only healed completely, but there is also no evidence of it reappearing. In addition, this vitamin seems to give me an amazing amount of energy throughout my day, helps suppress my appetite, speed up my metabolism, and improve my overall attitude and stress management. I normally wouldn't post on this website, but I feel that I must spread the word on this amazing natural vitamin. Hope this helps!"
