06/22/2012: Christine from Nottingham, England: "Do give marshmallow root, it worked well for me. I opened two capsules into a cup and added a little water three times a day. I had tried most of the other remedies and this one worked best for me. We are different but it may be worth a try."
06/21/2012: Brad from North Providence, Rhode Island: "Dear "diet not helping acid reflux", you need to Proper Food Combine. Its been around for I think 100 years. Google it, buy a book, whatever. The foods you eat are not digesting the way you are combining them, Good luck. Harvey diamond is one good source for a book. Brad"
06/21/2012: Leeopia from Lawrecnceburg, Ky, Usa: "Im a 40 yr man that has had acid reflux or gerd acording to my doctor, for about 10 yrs. At first I would eat tums when I would get it. Which I usually got it from baked goods, like bagels, cookies, cakes, pies, dounuts, things like that. Spicey food never bothered me. Well over time it got worse and my Dr put me on Nexium and then Ive been taking Prilosec OTC for a good 5 years. Well now everything gives me reflux! So Ive come off of the medicine and I am trying natural ways to help it. I have cut out all junk food and fast food. No sodas of coffee or tea or anything like that. I eat 5 small meals a day. (I had a bad problem of overeating and the food wold sit in my stomach for hrs) And Ive tried to just about every natural remedie I can find and nothing is working. Here is a typical day for me:
Small breakfest: Usually small bowl of oatmeal with 1 egg and 1 piece of whole wheat toast I also started taking a digestive enzyme with each meal for about a week.
Snack: A piece of fruit
Lunch: Turkey and cheese sandwich on rye bread with mayo.
Snack: Apple
Workout for about a 1/2 hr after work
Protein shake and then a sensible dinner small portion fish or chicken with rice and a veggie and nothing else for the rest of the night.
Heres the problem. After about 1-2 hrs after eating I get reflux. Sometimes its bad sometimes its just one burp and then goes away. Sometimes water triggers it! And I have a physical job so I bend over alot and thats when its really bad! My stomach always feels bloated or crampy all the time. I think from taking the prilosec for so long has really messed up my stomach and is the root of the problems.
Ive tried everything and I dunno if I have to much acid or not enuff. Ive taken ph test and my saliva is usually alkine and my urine is acidic. But its not to bad just over or under the normal range. Physical activity seems to bring it out the most. If I just sit around it doesnt really bother me to much. If I dont eat anything for the day it doesnt really bother me. I have been eating this way for about a month now and working out for only 2 weeks. Im not obese. Im 5'10" 180lbs. Ive always been in ok shape. Hardly ever sick. I just want to get this under control and any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this post."
05/16/2012: Etta from Tustin, Ca: "I have always had issues with nausea. A couple years ago, I was throwing up all the time, lost alot of weight. At the time, I had insurance and they told me I was lactose intolerant, and I had a severe sensitivity to acids. I gave up smoking cigarettes, dairy, coffee, candy, acidic fruits/veggies. All seemed well, gained 40lbs back, gained muscle.
But now I am getting sick again more often that I would like to. I do not have insurance. I am wondering if a written, planned out diet would be best? I am really confused and uneducated in nutrition. I am a bad pill taker, but have been hoarding prescription Prilosec for the worst times. Don't really know how else to describe my symptoms, PLEASE HELP!"
Replies05/17/2012: Lori from Birmingham, Alabama replies: "Low Fodmap is hands down the best EVER... Its all about food sugars, wheat, lactose, fructose;Lactose as you know is a sugar; you must look at Fructose Malabsorbtion, this has saved my life along with stopping ALL presriptions, they are loaded with fillers, binders and colors that will worsen your condition not make it better;
Stop the prilosec, this is very bad; symptom treating is no way to live... Find the cause, or further disease will develop... Take my word on this one; stop all meds and only use dye free benedryl or dye free gluten free ibuprophen; use sparkling mineral water, (like Perrier, PLAIN one) a few shakes of salt and fresh lemon or lime for indigestion... You will find that one week medicine free and low fodmap will cure all your digestion issues! I was belching night and day until I changed the foods I ate!
Here is a very basic guide: Wiki Fructose Malabsorbtion.. Low fodmap has saved my LIFE! Eat only real butter, hard cheeses (cabot white sharp cheddar has no lactose) lactose free milk, avoid apples, garlic, onions, chemicals in food like INULIN, eat nothing fat free or sugar free, no sorbitol or nonsense, pure fructose will sicken... every time; Hope this helps: http://www.ibsgroup.org/brochures/fodmap-intolerances.pdf"

03/29/2012: Gary from Edmonton, Alberta, Alberta, Canada: "Hello, I'm new on here and I think that after much investigation I may have GERD. I have most of the symptoms which just started a few days ago. I have not been able to lay down at night to sleep as the acid reflux burns my throat and esophagus. Last night I found this website and after reading the countless logs of other people who are experiencing what I am, I feel I have finally found some help. I have taking antacids and stuff like nexium for probably 20 years. After reading many posts last night which kept me up until 330 in the morning, I think that I need to try this HCL with Pepsin. Can anyone tell me where I can get it as I do not want to continue with this very hard to manage problem of gastric reflux. Email me at Garywyurchak@shaw. Ca please as soon as you can. I am desperate!!!!"
02/01/2012: Deborah from Herts, Uk: "I have been suffering with reflux since May last year and it gives many symptoms, feels like a bubble in my throat, constant clearing throat , choking feeling, difficulty breathing, swallowing problems etc. My Dr say I have a spasm in esophagus which he felt when he was doing endo but nothing showed on Barium. I take Omeprazole 80mg and Isosbate 10mg to try and help the spasm. My osteo thinks all caused by such a tight diaphragm which causes the reflux. Not sure who to believe or what to do but am miserable as cannot eat etc. Do you think I dare take ACV- it sounds too good to be true and I am so bad I can't risk being made worse."
01/30/2012: Linda from Marshfield, Ma: "I have an autoimmune disease called scleroderma. I have had this now for 17 years. I am a 54 year old female and am looking for some help. More recently I had been struggling with ulcerations on my fingertips and major acid reflux. I went to a Dr. of Holistic medicine and was on a brown rice, soy, fish, chix, turkey, veggie kind of eating. I lost a lot of weight and then the weight loss became a little uncontrollable. I got some kind of an intestinal thing and the next thing you know I am in trouble. 3 weeks of diarrhea and I am away on vacation. When I came home they did tests and found out I was anemic. All stool samples came out fine. I didn't have any fat on my body so a friend suggested me to read Jordan Rubin's story and read the Makers Diet.
Since then I have been drinking Kefir Probiotic and adding whole raw dairy to my foods of choice. At the same time I am experiencing acid reflux which had gotten better on the rice and soy plan. I do take 1/4 tsp. of baking soda with 2 oz. of water before bed. Can I take this more? Should I add anything to it? My acid reflux can really be bad at times and feels like a fire in my digestive tract all the way up to my ears!! I am looking for any advice that you can give me. Thank you so much. Linda"
01/26/2012: Lakanush from North Brunswick, Nj, Usa: "Hi, I am looking for natural remedies for esophageal spasms. I tried to look under ailments under E alphabet but unable to find it. Could someone please tell me where it is under ailments?
Thanks, Lak."

01/17/2012: Caz from Maldon Essex, England: "I have just had a bout of diverticulitis. I normally recover from this with little side effects, not this time though.. I've been left with the most awful acid reflux. Nothing seems to work and I'm getting desperate for ideas. Please any suggestions will be more than welcome.. Thanks, Caz"
Replies01/17/2012: Michelle from Cambridge, Cambs Uk replies: "Dear Caz, these are my remedies for acid reflux, which just about ruins my life! At least half an hour before you eat or drink in the morning, take a glass of warm water with juice of a lemon and half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. This helps stop acid burn for the first part of the day. It helps to put the body into the right PH state. Look up Ted's alkalising Carb bicarb remedy for use throughout the day as well.Try non acidic fruit, and protein for breakfast, but try to avoid bread and coffee, both cause extreme discomfort/pain! Chew a few whole almonds after meals, and if still painful, I find eating up to a head of lettuce kills the burn. Eat smaller meals, and leave longer to digest as shovelling another meal on top of an already part full stomach is guaranteed to burn! I try to do all these things as a regular part of my day, so I can manage without ppi pills, and only take antacids as a last resort. Other desperate measures I have resorted to are, A glass off milk, drink half and sip the rest as reflux occurs, you should eventually achieve relief, and taking milk of magnesia. some people think acid reflux is magnesium deficiency, but don't take too much MOM, it is a laxative! Hope this helps and would appreciate anyone else's tips to deal with this miserable affliction."
12/12/2011: Bubbles81g from Trenton, Nj: "I need help I have acid reflux so bad I can't eat or drink anything- it all comes up and right out. I'm eating the smoothies, tums but in eating 10 a day and nexium 2 a day when I can get them and prevacid 5 or more a day and they help a very very LITTLE for me. The coumputer said there is 13 foods that help with an acid but if you eat them and I can't keep the food down. What am I to do- I need help and no one will point me in the right way. Doctors think there's nothing wrong but it's not like they care either. It's been month after month and many more months and they still won't stick a coop down my throat."
Replies12/13/2011: Karen from Los Angeles, Ca/usa replies: "My story: I had acid reflux for approx. 15 years. I kept toms by my bed at night. After a few years, I went to my doctor. I was prescribed an antacid. I asked my doctor what was the prognosis (expecting a way to cure it). Instead I was told that the acid reflux would get worse, and that I would need more and more medication to heal it; and perhaps eventually an operation. My doctor was absolutely correct... It did get worse and more medication was needed (2x, 3x... 6x's).
One day I walked into the kitchen of my church, where one of the monks was preparing finger salads for the other monks. He gave me a 15-20 minutes lecture on ORGANIC VEGETABLES. Prior to this I thought that those who ate these were WEIRD.
I didn't increase my salads, but instead substituted them with deep green ORGANIC SALAD VEGETABLES. It wasn't until approx. 4 months that I noticed that I wasn't needing to take antacids as much, my regular signal to take them wasn't being activated (volcanic acid rushing up my throat). Sometimes, I would fall asleep without medication and wake up the next morning without having been awakened around 2 a.m. with acid racing up my throat. It was then I realized that sometime positive was happening to me.
It's been three years now without regular antacid medications, and I eat a lot of spicy foods. Every once in a blue moon I'll need to take a minimum amount of antacids... But that's only when I eat especially atrociously... Holidays, etc.
I think that the ORGANIC GREENS which I'm told are fortified several times more in vitamins, minerals, etc. allowed my body to heal the root cause of the condition. Most vegetables are made with the Monsanto seed and are genetically modified to look and taste GREAT!!! Nutrition may not be the first priority... Also these seeds are infused with pesticides which we the consumer eat.
GOOD LUCK."
12/13/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Bubble81g the best thing you can do for your acid reflux is to STOP taking Nexium, Prevacid and tums!!! . Acid reflux is caused by too little stomach acid and the Antacids further decrease acid in your stomach..Start taking 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in water (you can add a few drops of fresh lemon juice to taste) in water and wait for the difference.
You can even have a small glass of fresh lemon juice every morning. It is acidic but turns alkaline in the body. Rinse your mouth out with water after drinking these to save your tooth enamel.
People are being deceived in thinking that acid reflux is caused by too much acid - it is the opposite."
11/18/2011: Suchita from Panaji, Goa India: "My mom is sufferring from acidity problem. She gets the problem of long heartburn, chest and stomach pain inflammation in chest, gastroephageal reflux."
10/09/2011: Chris from Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey, U.s: "I get heartburn frequently. About 45 minutes ago I woke up outta dead sleep to my chest stinging where I felt I had to throw up. I only threw up real tangy phlegm. Now I just drank 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar and poured honey in my mouth. The heartburn is a little better but it's still too bad to go to bed. What else can I do? I'm on prilosec otc I took 2 of them too. I'm almost 30 years old and almost in tears this is crazy!!!!"
Replies10/09/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Chris, acid reflux is caused by too little acid in your stomach. Prilosec decreases stomach acid... the opposite of what you actually need. If I were you I would stop taking it straight away - you can do your own research on the dangers of it.If you take ACV it will help you because it will add back the acid into your stomach.
You should start taking iodine, because iodine will regulate your stomach acid. Most people are deficient in iodine. Read the iodine section on the website and research iodine. Search Dr. Brownstein, iodine on youtube. He has some excellent information."
10/09/2011: Donna from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia replies: "I used apple cider vinegar with baking soda in boiling water to get off of nexium (twice a day), zantac, and gaviscon. I drank it like a tea. Take it before eating. Within a week I had major improvement. You probably have not enough acid and the prescription drugs are making your situation worse. I also used deglicerized liquorish when needed. Hope this helps.... I've been where you are and I don't need anything for reflux now. I was referred for surgery but didn't need to have it by the time I saw the surgeon."
09/11/2011: Saravanan from Doha, Qatar: "Hi Ted,
I am expecting the reply from you since I have posted this question long back, but I didn't get any reply on this problem. Please kindly help me. I am having silent reflux. No heart burn, but my throat is getting affected a lot. I feel like sore throat for more than 10 days now. I don't know what to do? Initially I was on nexium 40 mg, but later it doesn't work. Now I am on Losec 20 Mg. I tried ACV with Bakingsoda, but it aggrevates my reflux. I tried Aloe vera juice, I feel better with reflux, but still my throat is very bad. Please give me some solution to get rid of this.
Regards, Saravanan"
Replies09/12/2011: Helpyourself from Houston, Texas, Usa replies: "Try 20 drops of Tabasco (orginal) in 4 oz. of water. Swallow. Use as needed. A few times a week is enough, then use as needed."
12/14/2011: Mike from Yonkers, New York replies: "Reader from Houston suggested using tabasco sauce mixed with water for a sore throat caused by acid reflux. Does this heal the sore throat?.. And if so how... Since the contents are spicy?thanks, mike"
03/28/2012: Berni from Jackson, Nj replies: "Regarding the post saying to use tabasco sauce in water is nonsense! Yes it is spicy and spicy is the #1 worst thing for anyone with gerd."
09/09/2011: Elliejay from London, Uk: "I have been having reflux problems since I finished breastfeeding my son in 2009. The symthoms seemed to come mainly just before my menstral cycle which indicated to me that a change in hormones triggered it. Has anyone else experienced this?
I am now pregnant with my second child and the symthoms are relentless but I can't figure out how much is reflux and how much is morning sickness! I have been prescribed Omeprozole but was never tested to see if I had too much or too little stomach acid and the more I read on this amazing site, the more I think it must be too little. I stopped taking the meds as they were not really working and yesterday tried ACV and a change of diet (low carb) which made me feel much improved until I had an evening meal which left me with the worse reflux I have had of an evening even after sipping ACV in water. I am keen to perservere with the ACV, aloe vera, probiotics and change in diet but would like to know if it is safe to try HCL with pepsin whilst pregnant? Has anyone else expereinced similar problems with hormone change?
Keen to know all your views!"
06/23/2011: Rrindia from Delhi, Delhi, India: "Hi, I am a 27 year old male. I have just discovered that I have been suffering from Acid reflux for last couple of years.
