Apple Treatment for Acid Reflux
Home Remedy Options
- An Apple or Apple Slices
- Apple Juice
- Apple Sauce
An apple (or two) a day is reported to prevent acid reflux and can be used to stop an attack. A small dish of applesauce or a glass of apple juice can sometimes work as well.
[YEA] 10/05/2005: Tomm S from Indpls, IN: "I stumbled onto your site thru a lot of searching for relief because I've come to believe that there isn't a cure for Acid Reflux! I'm yet to try the ACV thing but for now I will stand on my aide. A simple slice from an apple. Any color. I've noticed that the vinegar suggested here also is to be "Apple." Try it and I guarantee that you will be amazed."
[YEA] Parag from India: "I have tried this and it works. I am a singer and acid reflux is really a curse if u r a singer. But lately I have started eating some apple slices before going to bed. And it helps a lot. But the main thing is to have 5-7 small meals during the day instead having 3 large meals and eat at regular periods. Don't have late nights. and this will help to cure acid reflux a lot. than u can try other things like ACV or whatever works for u. But always try something natural instead of medicines. I myself tried taking anti-acid pills for months. But it won't cure the problem completely and worse, the day u stop taking pills, it will come back with a vengeance. so I stopped taking pills from many months now. And try to be regular with my sleep and meals and also workout regularly. It has helped."
Artichoke Extract, Aloe Vera
[YEA] 06/20/2012: Maryb from Virginia Beach, Virginia / USA: "I cured my acid reflux in 5 weeks. I had gone the route of apple cider vinegar (hated the taste and burning in my throat), then Prilosec, and Nexium. Then I met an Herbalist. She had me go to GNC and get the Artichoke Extract. I took two capsules right when I finished breakfast and two capsules right after dinner every day. She also had me get Aloe Vera juice extract (wildberry is my favorite). I would take two shots right when I woke up an two shots right before I went to bed. Sometimes I would take a shot mid afternoon ( not very often).
I quit the Nexium after being on the artichoke and aloe for 24 hours and had no burning I still followed the bland acid reflux diet. But at five weeks I forgot to take the artichoke one morning and had no burning, so I decided to back off the artichoke and aloe Vera in the next couple of days. Then quit it. I slowly started eating spicy foods again and had no issues. It has been a year now. I told one of my husbands customer about it. (she had been on Nexium for around a year). She called me the next morning an said she slept all night for the first time in ages, she stopped the nexium that day and was cured in 5 weeks with no more issues. My daughter told a coworker about it and hers is cured too. The artichoke help control the bile. Please try it. IT WORKS!!"Replies
07/05/2012: Ten from Bloomington, Mn replies: "Are you fully cured from gerd?? Are you able to eat anything you want??? Are you still taking artichoke and aloe regular???"
08/05/2012: Charmen from Tagbilaran City, Bohol replies: "hi I also want to cure mine, pls reps, what shot means, quantity?"
[YEA] 11/26/2011: Sergio Rossi from Mansfield, Texas: "Have had acid reflux since I am 12 years old. Tried all kinds of things thoughout the years, I learned that my stomach changes with time. ACV is good and I add it to most meals when possible. Pickle juice is also very good. The one thing that provides me with almost instant relief is avocado. The curious thing is that I didn't see it in the list and makes me wonder why? Hope it can provide some sort of help to some. Best luck!"
[WORKED TEMPORARILY] 01/02/2010: Mike from Perth, Western Australia: "I found the best cure for reflux is to stay off the piss!! Probably the most unrealistic remedy, considering I play in a band but it does help. Consequently I still get it real bad thats why Im on the net trying to find an alternative to my favourite past time!"
EC: To our US readers who might not have heard this phrase, "stay off the piss" means "stay away from alcohol"!
[NAY] 03/25/2012: Jen from Rock Hill, Sc replies: "I wake up almost daily with acid indigestion and I don't drink alcohol."
Avoid Non-Fat Dairy
[YEA] 12/31/2012: Tracy from Charlotte, Nc: "I stopped having acid reflux episodes when I stopped consuming non-fat dairy products. Try going to 1%. If that doesn't work, go to 2%. 2% works fine for me.
I used to think the episodes were a result of eating acidic foods (e. g., tomato sauce, etc. ), but found that consumption of non-fat dairy actually was the underlying cause that made my system intolerant of those foods. I can eat the other foods now with no problem.
Be sure to read labels, because skim milk and skim milk powder can be found where you least expect. I rarely get reflux now, but can trace it back to accidental ingestion of non-fat dairy every time it happens.
Hope this helps someone."Replies
01/01/2013: Larry from Fairfax, Va replies: "Your adverse reaction to non-fat milk is probably due to the highly heat treated milk protein that is added to replace the solid content lowered by the fat removal."
[YEA] 03/26/2010: Dianec from Los Angeles, Ca.: "Hello, In my 20's I had a constant case of Acid Reflux. I never had this problem anymore since I gave up
beef steaks. The only beef I can eat without problem is ground beef. This works for me.
06/11/2010: Erin from Tampa, Fl replies: "I've got to agree with this, to an extent. Every time I eat something with fried beef in it, I get terrible gas, the shooting pains kind, even if the beef is extra lean browned in olive oil. OTH, I can tolerate a small lean steak cooked on the grill, so long as the rest of the meal is nonfat. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the way the fat in the red meat reacts to certain cooking methods."
01/28/2011: Don from Whitehouse, Ohio replies: "Funny you should say this since hamburger is on the list of foods to avoid!"
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 05/24/2009: Nate from New Orleans, LA: "Hey, I tried everyting from this site. I was on Aciphex and Malox. This helped but did not cure anything. Then I saw these emails about apples and apple cider viniger. I have been taking apples for months before I read this. It did not help. Applecider vineger did not help. Probiotics did not help.
So what did? One guy posted here saying that Acid Reflux is a B12 deficiency. I had liquid B12 and put it under my tongue. Within 30 minutes I felt relief when I was previously having a bad reaction. I also had a nuropethy thing going on in my scalp that started after I got on blood pressure meds. My head tingled as my sinuses got bad. Even this partially but significantly went away. Not completely but a significant change. Much relief. 5 days later, I am feeling even better. I have to take B12 daily under my tongue but major results. Better than when I was on Aciphex. I feel that I will be cured in a few weeks as long as I stay on B12. I hope this helps some of you."
[YEA] 04/04/2008: Christine from Virginia Beach, USA: "Acid reflux is often caused by a Vitamin B12 deficiency. Since you need B12 to make enough intrisic factor and enzymes to absorb it, perhaps just taking ACV will help you absorb Vitamin B12 better.
Nevertheless, I have found that as long as I take 4 B12 dots (500 mcg) under the tongue once a day, I am fine. When I don't, the reflux comes right back."
[YEA] 01/30/2007: Jennifer from Blainville, Canada: "I started to get acid reflux at the age of 16yo in august. When i couldn't sleep due to these painful burns and throwing up all the time, and burping like a crazy m-f'er i thought I had cancer at the age of 17yo they told me it was A.R.D. i got 10 ulcers, two hernias pushing on my lungs... made a research and i will get cancer younger than normal! doctors told me that i got this old man sickness, old man meaning a man that is in debt, has kids, a heavy job, a stressful wife etc... well if they only knew that i was a beaten child and i always took care of my sister and brother since i was 7yo... i got an operation at 19yo because it was dangerous for me to continue on medications... A HOME REMEDY I HAVE NONE!!! I TRYED ALOT LOW FAT MILK, LESS SALT, LESS FAT ETC... EVEN JUST EATING CRACKERS FOR A MONTH NOTHING!!!! BUT MY UNCLE FROM ROMANIA BELIEVES THAT EATING BABY FOOD CAN HELP REGROW THE STRONG THAT YOU BODY NEEDS TO HEAL! THAT IS HOW HE GOT RID OF HIS STOMACH CANCER (THIS IS WHAT HE TOLD ME!!!) THANK YOU JENNIFER FROM QUEBEC!!!"
Baking Soda for Acid Reflux
Home Remedy Ingredients
- 1/8 - 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate)
- 6-8 ounces Filtered Water
Mix 1/8 - 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink. Usually taken after a meal, this simple alkalizing drink can quickly stop the pain of acid reflux.
[YEA] 11/02/2013: Shata from California: "I haven't had a episode of acid reflux, and been this uncomfortable in years. So I've been gambling with the things I eat and so forth. Had to do a quick look up of measurements of baking soda to water. Having a episode to any degree of discomfort is torment. I immediately remember my first epic episode with acid reflux. A whole month of not being able to hold food down for more than 30 mins, felt as if I had food poisoning for 30 days. Being in so much pain I just laid in bed and cried and couldn't move or sleep. Being woke out of my sleep violently from sharp pains as if someone was cutting me. Losing about 100 lbs in 3. 5 months and being mentally scared really turns a light on. Don't over look acid reflux DISEASE as just heart burn or something to take care of when symptoms are present. Really make a life change. Detoxing periodically, eating healthy and exercising is the closest you will get to a cure. My 20 mins are up so back to sleep for me."
[YEA] 01/23/2013: Will from Memphis, Tennessee : "Baking soda for acid reflux - I can't believe how much this helped me out tonight. I am a 27 year old man, and I when I tried to go to bed I was almost in tears and could barely stand up the pain was so bad. I have never had a spell like this before in my life. It was even hard to breath. After the unbearable pain came back a third time in 2 hours, I was on the verge of going to the hospital. I started googling symptoms on my phone and eventually figured out my problem. Thank God I found this site and tried the baking soda. It was almost instant relief. Baking soda worked like a charm. Thanks so much for this site."
[YEA] 08/11/2012: Joshua from Lebanon, Pennsylvania: "Hi everyone suffering from acid reflux. No need to for expensive medicines. Two things are necessary: take bicarbonate of soda, which is simple baking soda (not baking powder), and reduce your acid intake by cutting down on acid-rich foods such as alcohol, meats, fish, sugars, oils, fried foods. No need to cut these out completely, rather just cut down and take at least a level teaspoonful of baking soda daily (best in the morning) in a glass of water or juice. Oh, also drink plenty of water each day. Three quarts (liters) of water a day for adults. Sounds like a lot of water but once you start taking more water, you will crave it! Eat more vegetables which are alkaline-rich foods and very necessary for good health. Happy health!"Replies
10/22/2012: Drmikedo from Northumberland, Pa, Usa replies: "My favorite use of this is to make Sodium citrate to treat acid reflux. Works by neutralizing and then buffering the stomach's acidity. Does not cause the rebound effect of calcium containing solutions (calcium stimulates the body to secrete more acid, as acid is required for its absorption). Can easily be made by combining 4oz of orange juice with 1/2 tsp of baking soda.
This combined with a diaphramatic release (see accupressure) will cure most cases of episodic acid reflux."
[WARNING!] 06/03/2011: Axa from Newark, Ca: "My uncle, recently past away and he had regular acid reflux. He used baking soda as a remedy to ease his pain, however after 10-15 years of doing this he eventually went to the ER and it was discovered that half of his large intestines had deteriorated. There could be a lot of factors involved here, and I am no doctor, but I sure as heck am staying away from taking in chemicals like baking soda to try and alleviate a problem. There is a difference between trying to cure a symptom and a problem. Find the root of the problem and solve that for long-term impact."Replies
[YEA] 10/30/2011: Shivagreg from Kiamesha Lake, Ny replies: "There is not a more benign chemical on the face of the earth than sodium bicarbonate, and nothing is better to neutralize an acid stomach. A little carbon dioxide will be given off - you will burp - and that is that. You can't take too much - it's essentially non-toxic. And your stomach will naturally adjust it's pH to digest the food you eat. The idea that sodium bicarb would cause some disease is sheer ignorance. It's never happened.
The cure for acid reflux and an acidic stomach is a diet rich in green vegetables, tomatoe products, citris fruits, and milk or yogurt - in other words, basic reacting foods. Starches - which break down into sugar - are to be avoided. That includes especially potatoes and white flour, and, of course, sugar. Period. Shun oils, don't eat fried foods of any kind, and no alcohol. Beef is very fatty - You're better off eating a bit of non-fried chicken if you want some meat.
And that's how you cure acid reflux. If you think you might have ulcers, get checked for it. A quick course of anti-biotics should wipe them out; then treat your stomach well by watching what you put in it. If you're interested, look up Edgar Cayce's advice on diet - it's a good place to start. Good luck!"
02/26/2012: Dee from Cincinnati, Ohio replies: "I have to disagree about starches, I am a diabetic, I eat green vegetables, I do not eat flour, sugar, very limited dairy products, I drink water, and have acid reflux. I also eat tums, and take prilosec, nothing seems to work!"
[YEA] 03/12/2012: Brother Helper from Pittsburg, California replies: "My wife used it. And she's cured from GERD. Sodium bicarbonate is the best treatment for aciditis of all sorts. even cancer cure."
05/06/2012: Sickboy from Valpo, In replies: "brother helper how long and how much did your wife take to cure the GERD? I believe I have GERD (i heard it can cause asthma like symtoms) I took a little seems to help, but can you be detailed on the amount, how many times a day, and how long to take it. Thanks"
[YEA] 04/05/2010: Shotzie from Lynchburg, Va: "Last night I had such an attack of gastric acid reflux I thought I was going to have a heart attack and die. I am not exaggerating. I tried everything ice, tums, milk.... Then I went on line and googled your site. I tried the baking soda 1/4 tsp in 8 oz of water and what a difference. WOW I am singing your praises today. Did sleep upright in the recliner finally got some sleep. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Why hasn't a doctor told me this before? Today I do have some chest congestion ( I think I got some acid in my lungs) but what a difference. I have bookmarked your site and will be here again. Thanks so much!!!"Replies
[YEA] 10/02/2010: Jane from New York replies: "I have tried may home remedies but nothing has given me the relief that baking soda has given, I would strongly recommend this."
11/15/2010: Mckenziee from Bluefield Va, Virginia replies: "I have acid reflux so bad, that it bends me over double, feels like a ball of fire right in the top part of my stomach, I mix a teaspoon of baking soda and half glass of water, and drink it, and within a min a so it is totaly gone, no medicines the dorctor has perscribed me worked, I mean none, this worked a mirace!!!"
[YEA] 03/01/2011: Brian from Baltimore, Md replies: "I have pretty bad acid reflux. I've tried changing my diet, staying away from foods that are obvious starters for attacks. Nothing works. Somedays I wake up with it. A friend of the family, who is a doctor in rural michigan, turned me on to the idea of using baking soda and water. It kills the condition almost instantly when you have attacks. It is no cure... but man it is way cheaper than tums and boy does it ever work better."
[YEA] 04/07/2011: Trudy1989 from Waverly, Ohio replies: "Amazing, I just woke up with my most horrible acid reflux attack ever. was trying anything and everything to take away the burn and hurt. I started searching on the web for quick relief remedies. I came upon this one with the baking soda. WOW, WOW, WOW - I am amazed at how quickly it helped, literally minutes!!! Now I think I can go back to sleep - just 30 minutes ago I was bawling with discomfort!! Thank you for recommending baking soda in water - I know I will always have it on hand from here on out."
04/07/2011: Kareng from Sugarland, Texas, Usa replies: "I have suffered with Acid Reflux for a couple of years. In the beginning I could take these remedies and get relief as well. As it progressively got worse nothing would help and it would even occur when I drank only water or ate very little raw food. Through much research and experiments to find the CAUSE, I found that a good vegiterian Enzyme mixture, and a superior Acidopholis/Preboitics combo along with Liver and Gallbladder Support have solved the problem. I also found that I am sensitive to Nightshades (like peppers and tomatoes), these cause pain everytime! I believe this sensitivity along with my Gluten intolerance, Adrenal Fatigue and weight problems are just symptoms of Candida and Heavy Metal Toxicity. Through much Stress and poor health throughout my life I stuggle with these myriad ailments constantly. I have learned to look at everything as a symptom and then to search out the cause. So often we treat the symptom instead of the cause, which only gets us temporary relief."
[YEA] 08/31/2011: Cherie from Jacksons Gap, Al replies: "I honestly cannot believe that this worked! I was spending the weekend @ our lakehouse in AL. I woke up @ 2am with horrendous heart burn & relux. I have suffered from this condition on & off for most of my life, taking both over-the-counter & prescription medicines. Unfortunately, I was far far away from an open pharmacy or convenience store, and in desperation researched the internet for a possible home rememdy. Thank goodness I stumbled upon this site!!! The overachiever that I am, instead of using 1/4 tsp. of baking soda, I used 1/2 tsp. In 8 oz. of water. Though it was a little bitter, I drank all of it. After about 15 - 20 minutes, most of my reflux was gone. I was able to go back to sleep. This is truly a simple but effective cure. Yea!!!"
