[YEA] Thepointedhat from Sacramento, Ca, Usa writes: "I, too, have used baking soda (Bicarb Soda) as a remedy for acid reflux. As opposed to adding it to a full glass of water, however, I add 1/8 teaspoon to approximately 2 ounces of water, and top with two drops of peppermint essential oil. I can then down it in one go. The peppermint oil helps disguise the taste of the soda, and has the added benefit of also being a natural remedy for indigestion and heartburn - hence its use in a certain, pink, chalky liquid I'm sure we're all familiar with.

Since discovering this remedy, I've stopped buying commercial antacids altogether. Baking soda is so much more effective - and budget friendly, too!

[YEA] Janie Y from Mattoon, Illinois writes: "I have been suffering from Gerd for years. There are some foods that really irritate it the most. I find that by leaving the caffeine (anything chocolatey!), and tomatoes(the red ones as the yellow ones seem ok and aren't that bothersome) alone, I am fine for the most part and seem to suffer less. But, oh how I love to eat them both! Thank goodness I have discovered (because of your website) pickles/pickle juice and anything pickled! When I feel the Gerd coming on (because I am only human and vulnerable to these temptations,I have slipped and eaten those things to which I shouldn't have and thus pay the price),and... that is when I will grab a pickle slice or two. I also like pickled asparagus spears/pickled cauliflower, pickled beets, etc.(most of these are found at our local health food store. These things seem to really do the trick and with-in seconds after gobbling a few of these up, wa-la the Gerd has disappeared! I also drink a tab bit of the juice as well. Maybe a couple tablespoons full. Anways, thank you for your website and for everyone who contributes."

Andrew from Burnsville, Minnesota, United States writes: "Hi, i am 17 years old. ive had acid reflux for a couple or few years now. i started smoking cigs just about over a yearbefor this all happened. my acid reflux gradually increased in presence, amount, and pain over a few short months. so i talked to my doc and they just suggested or prescribed prylosect for about 2 months. and named off only a couple things that cause it and prevent it. i was told to get between 40 and 80, im not too sure sure, mg but the product for those conditions was like 200 bucks. so i just got 2 boxes both 15, or 20 mg's per box, maybe even 30, which together the boxes equaled my proposed dosage for about 40 bucks. so i got what i was supposed to just under half the price and in 2 packages. i took it, morning and befor bed and it worked, it all slowly but quickly disappeared. after the about 2 months on them i thought i felt it was better and i was just about out of the meds so i decided to go off feeling pretty confident, and to save the remainder of the pills for future use. i didnt ask anyone if i should or not though. its been 2 or 3 years since ive taken any and it gradualy has worsened like when it first showed up except quite slower sorta. thats about the only thing ive tried or heard of trying for a cure, besides like milk and pickle juice. keeping in mind that i am kinda realy poor. can anyone tell me what i could buy for present symptoms, and to remove this curse for good? and what kinds of food concoctions, or food groups, or food all on its own could be taken for both presently occurring and future preventing symptoms? THANKS ALOT for the help, or for trying to help!"

*vinegar (distilled or ACV)
*pickle juice (not the sweet ones)
*juice from pickled hot peppers (capsaicin is an anti-inflammatory)
*juice from pickled ginger (another anti-inflammatory)
*1/4 tsp sodium bicarbonate, 1/2 tsp citric acid in 4 oz cold water (like Alka-Seltzer without the aspirin)
*12 oz club soda with lemon or lime and a dash of bitters, no ice, quickly consumed with a straw (helps to prevent the ingestion of too much air)"

Alan from Anaheim, Ca writes: "I have been suffering with terrible pain in my chest that I didn't associate with the acid at 1st. After my doctor did an EKG and Chest xray and they were fine, he told me it was likely just from stress. Then the reflux starting getting really bad and I realized the pain in my chest and back is from my esophogus.

Now I just started the purple pill today because my doc gave me samples to last 2 weeks. I found this site and I want to try all of the remedies at once.

I just took a tablespoon of mustard and it helped. I am occasionally burping and at least the mustard taste is better than the acid taste :)

I had a shot of ACV two days ago and it also gave me some relief. I was looking in the cupboard for baking soda and wishing I had some green apples.

I am guessing it might not be a good idea to try 4 or 5 of these remedies at the same time. If I feel better, I won't know which one really helped...or does it matter as long as I feel better. But maybe too many remedies will have a negative affect. All I want is to feel better. I think it won't be better until my sore esophogus heals. I am also taking a chug of milanta a few times a day. Thank you for all the suggestions.

[YEA] Modern from Langhorne, Pa, USA writes: "I just wanted to weigh in on the subject of Acid Reflux & Gerd. At the end of my statement, I have another idea that I have tried that seems to work on the same principle as the Apple Cider Vinegar, so read on. I am 48 years old and several months ago I started getting these symptoms that puzzled me. This eventually evolved into losing my regular voice and experiencing chronic laryngitis. I finally broke down and went to see a doctor. He scoped my esophagus and saw all the redness and a polyp/cyst. With this, I was diagnosed with Acid Reflux/Gerd. First thing he did was subscribe prilosec for a month, one tablet before bedtime. This did nothing, in fact I got worse. Then the Doctor subscribed prescription Zantac AND an inhaler used for asthma. The inhaler has removed the polyp and my voice is back after 6 months and the Zantac has helped reduce the redness but not eliminated it. The Doctor wants me to take the zantac for 3 more months. But like so many of you, I don't want to be ingesting meds for so long. I started researching other remedies and I came across one that seems to be working nicely. Instead of the vinegar, all you have to do is eat a few slices of Apple before meals and before bedtime. It seems to accomplish the same results as the ACV but much easier to ingest and easier to carry along with you. I think I will use the Apple method before bedtime because it seems to be more of a time released effect and perhaps drink the ACV before meals that are suspect for acid reflux. Even though I have cut out coffee which was real hard to due and now I drink herbal and green tea and I try to watch what I eat."

[YEA] Van from Sa, Tx writes: "Keeping this short so as not to repeat information -- I stopped taking my meds for a couple days till symptoms appeared. Tried the ACV, and it didn't really work (for the reflux). Tried the almonds, worked slightly. Ate the apple...worked almost immediately!!! I was amazed. Since then I have been eating on average 2 apples a day, drinking apple juice with my meals (which seems to work also). I still am experimenting with the ACV though...but for my sinus clogs and allergies...too early to tell but that seems to be working slowly as well.

Thanks to all who post here and to the site owners for helping people try to find more healthy ways to live. The part that really chaps my hide though is that doctors HAVE TO KNOW that these remedies exist and work and yet they still try and sell us on those prescription meds."

Evelyn from Ogden, Utah writes: "I have had acid reflux for years and I hardly ever feel the symptoms of heartburn, I only have that irritating tickling on the left side of my throat, followed by lots of coughing and then mucus that I'm clearing my throat for minutes afterwards, it is very troublesome. I can only lay on a certain side at night and cough all of the time. I have a book that lists some common alkaline ash foods and some common acid ash foods. Eating the foods on the alkaline food list help control the acid while the acid ash food list leave strong acid in your body, so by eating the alkaline foods such as apples, almonds, apricots, bananas just to name a few, versus bacon, beef, bran, wheat, cheese, chicken, crackers, these foods are on the acid list. Just an example of how we really have to watch our diets if we want to help control our acid reflux. I am going to try the ACV (apple cider vinegar) tonight, wish me luck, because I have been suffering with this annoying cough for years!!!"

[YEA] Aara from Washington, Dc writes: "I'm pregnant 32 weeks, and had started to feel GERD-like discomforts from 2 weeks before. (I didn't know it was GERD then of course - until yesterday) I thought it was gas, as that was what the Ob-Gyn had said it was, and abstained from eating my favorite Fuji Apples - (apples supposedly cause more gas) only for the reflux to become increasingly worse, especially at night when bile and acid would travel from my stomach up through the esophagus and lodge its acidity into my throat. (Sleeping on both left or right side didn't matter at this point)

It had gotten so bad at one point that I thought I was drowning from my own acidic bile/saliva that would travel up my mouth and nose. I didn't know what was happening to me and the fear was immense, when I decided to research on the exact things I was feeling (not assume it was gas, but acid taste in throat) when I was led to this Earth CLinic site and realized GERD is what I have and NOT just plain ol' pregnancy-belching-gas.

I had of course tons of apples at home, and ate 1/2 a Fuji delish apple and for not having slept for two days, I was exhausted, and not only was I able to just sleep (with head raised a little on left side), the acidic taste in throat and esophagus was gone by the time I fell asleep, and the next morning I'm as good as new!

APPLES REALLY work! and I'm back to my happy-easy-pregnancy again!"

Years ago I had very bad acid reflux a friend told me to take HCl capsules, I thought he was nuts telling me to take acid on what I thought was already too much acid in my stomach. But I worked, Years later it came back again I tried tums, milk, water etc, it was like pouring gasolene on fire. Then I remembered the HCl and it went right away. So in my opinion it is difficult to tell if your to acid or too alkaline, Same symptoms."

I also read that apples do the trick, but not having any apples on hand, I turned to my jar of organic apple sauce. It is helping also. I think more so than the pickle juice did. I just buy a jar of pickles from the store and when I have a bad acid attack I drink the juice from the jar. About 1/2 cup should work depending on how bad your have it at the time. It's a quick temporary fix but it works very fast. Do not get the "Zesty" pickles or any that have peppers. I made that mistake by not reading that label or looking at the bottom of the jar before I bought them. The peppers make things worse. There seems to be a common trend here with vinegar based products. Remember it's the juice, not the pickles."

[YEA] Crazydogjack from New Castle, Pa, USA writes: "Okay. Here's my advice to acid reflux. If you take the "medication" traditionally given for reflux, what happens is that it depletes the acid in your stomach and then you don't digest your food properly. I was on medication for 11 years and decided there was a better way. There are a slew of side effects from taking those suggested meds. This is what I came up with on my search for something better to cure this problem. I was very skeptical that it would work but I thought what the heck I'll try it and it worked.

In the begininning I used a combination of orange peel extract every other day, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and water daily and organic Aloe Vera juice as needed. After two months I became symptom free. I drink the Apple Cider Vinegar and water everyday because of the health benefits. I also keep aloe vera juice on hand and I keep the orange peel extract on hand just in case I have a flare up. I have been symptom free for over a year and I feel great! Best of luck to you! I am sure this will work for you too!"

However, I just wanted to detox as a starting point and wasn't completely happy with the diet as I understood from reputable sources that a vegetarian diet only is not healthy. However, the detoxing itself .. eating only veggies and fruit for at least 5 days resulted in all of my problems disappearing.. and this was because my PH balance was too acidic. So my advice is DETOX to achieve at least a 7.0 PH balance."

Rchard North from Hanover, Pa writes: "I could use some additional information on the subject of LERD if anyone would be kind enough to respond. I have the "global sensation" thing going on in the back of my throat and can't get rid of it. The ENT says I have a benign lesion on my left aretynoid. I was operated on once to have it removed and it came back within 4 months. I have done ACV, royal jelly, raw honey, pottasium citrate, and modified my diet to remove coffee, soda, and any other acidic thing that would aggravate any condition. I have no symptoms of acid whatsoever and never have. I can eat red peppers before bedtime and sleep great. I don't do that though. I elevated the bed 6 inches also in an effort to alleviate nightime acid possibilities. The ENT seems dumb as a stone with this. He has no cause or definitive diagnosis. He has the attitude of "let's cut this out, here, take this". Maybe I will try Aloe? Maybe probiotics? Maybe betaine HCL? I don't know at this point. What I do know is I would like to avoid the scalpel again. ANY SUGGESTIONS PEOPLE? HELP ME OUT HERE. THANKS."
