[YEA]  10/13/2008: Naomi from Auckland, New Zealand: "Psyllium husk (remedy) Irritable Bowel Syndrome (ailment)

After years of laxative abuse associated with an eating disorder, I ended up with sever IBS and an intolerance to a wide range of foods, including many fruits. I started taking psyllium husks recently after reading about it in a health magazine, and I have been amazed by the difference. I can eat most foods without the bloating, flatulence and chronic stomach pain that I have had to live with for years!

Although, I have found that when I have not taken the psyllium for several days, the symptoms have returned again. But to be able to live without pain, a tablespoon of psyllium on my breakfast in the mornings seems a small ask!"

QUESTION

11/19/2011: Patricia from Hanover, Ontario Canada: "In response to Malli fro Chennai in regards to his son. Sorry to hear of your sons struggles. It sounds as if he may have some concurrent issues happening and potentially some after effects of meds. In reading his symptoms it also sounds as if he may be dealing with some heavy metal toxicity more specifically lead and I am wondering if he has had exposure. Just another avenue to consider. Good luck"

11/18/2011: Malli from Chennai, Tamilnadu, India: "Hi Ted,

I happened to see your site while looking for some solution for my son's problem. I am very much impressed about your site and I thought that you can give him some instructions to get over from his problems. He is 20 year old now and for the last three years he is suffering from abdominal pain, initially it is diffused, accompanied by belching, burning sensation, frequent respiratory infections, early morning sneezing, cold lower extremities, tremors in hands, headaches, poor quality sleep started when he finished his school final board examinations. Initially told as reflux problems and anxiety. Treated with regular antacids, H2 blockers, antihistaminic, anti helminthitic and antispasmodics. He is also constipated and not very much responding to laxatives.

H. Pylori kit is given without endoscopy for one month. Then we treat him second dose of H. P kit with nalaxadrone 3 mg for 3 months after doing a first time endoscopy which showed medium sized ulcer in the duodenum and H. Pylori positive in the biopsy. Now more than pain it is itching internally ( he is showing a place nearer to umbilicus) and constipation still existing but not to that degree often followed by frequent bowel movements for next few days. Now he is not taking milk, chili, tomato, spices, brinjal (egg plant), lemon, raw coconut and non vegetarian items and egg according to instructions by homeopath and other doctors. He is irritable since he couldn't find any improvement in his itching problem.

Now allopath are giving a different diagnosis as Irritable Bowel Disease. We have done repeated stool tests, blood test, allergy test, colonoscopy , capsule endoscopy, ultra sonogram, CT scan, during second upper GI endoscopy took biopsy from d2 and ruled out coeliac. The positive findings so far are low Hb around 11g% , ulcer in the first scopy, biopsy from second scopy shows chronic inflammation or Gut mucosa. They have given d/d as chronic viral infection.

He's feeling very low. We like to take some treatment which should focus on the inflammation of the gut mucosa. It is emergency. Please send some suggestions as soon as possible. Malli"

Although at first sounds strange... But it is natural. And you are not bothering the stomach with any more poison. http://www.gapsdiet.com/Home_Page.html"

It must be cold pressed unrefined... It has many many healing properties.... Also I would think to take him to a basic diet and avoid sugar, wheat and dairy... And red meat... Try juicing to give him the live enzymes and fresh vitamins and minerals... Or make him smoothies in a blender... I posted on under green smoothies that is an easy one and tastes good if you need it or more infor you can email me at dillonandgail(at)yahoo.com... Good luck!"

I'm in so much pain and I get so sick. Please can anyone guide me in the right direction so I don't have to live miserably everyday until I can afford a colonoscopy. Thank you for any help. 02/27/2011: Robert Henry from Ten Mile, Tn Usa replies: "HI U ASHLEY, , , , , , ,
Why do you think a colonoscopy will solve anything? My wife had your same problem and what the colonoscopy showed the doctor is that she had a very irregular colon, but he did not have the solution. She did a colon cleanse which broke all the plaque loose and plugged her even worse. She then had to go to a hydrotherpist and have several colonics before she was relieved. It appears that with the weight of the bowel plaque had distorted her bowels once the plaque was gone, her colon moved back into it's normal position and now her constipation problem is gone. Also, her she no longer has migraines.

We read numerous books on colon cleansing and learned how plaque build up can distort the shape of your colon, hindering normal digestion. It sounds like this could be your problem ."

12/14/2010: Jeff from Atco, New Jersey: "Hello,
I dont know if you answer questions but thought I would try. I am 44 yr old male and have been diagnosed with IBS-D for over 25 years. I have been on a medication of 3 doses of Questran for almost 20 years to help deal with it. But I think in the last year or so of taking this medication for so long, I am starting to get some side effects. I have read about them and I am getting fairly frequent headaches, dizziness sometimes, but the most pronounced is muscle and joint aches which is steadily getting worse. These are all listed as side effects of this drug.

I want to find a natural cure for my IBS and get off this med. I have read a lot of your website for cures but there seems to be so many different ones named by all the posters on your site. But it seems as though the ACV seems to do much more than just cure this problem so I was thinking of trying it but thought I would see what you recommend. I do know that if I was to go off my med for more than 2 days, I would have extreme abdominal pains, and would not be able to leave the house as that is how bad IBS affects me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Jeff9079(at)comcast(dot)net"

12/14/2010: Carly from Seattle, Wa - Usa replies: "Hi Jeff,
I don't know if you have searched on here or on the web re Turmeric, so I thought I would mention it to you as something you might want to look into. I was looking at the turmeric section on Earth Clinic for other reasons awhile back and thought I had seen something in relation to IBS. I also turned up quite a few things on a web search saying turmeric is supposed to be very helpful for IBS. I would read up on it as it is so helpful for so many things.

(I am fairly certain after having IBS for as long as you have that this has already been tested for, but just in case) - Another thing to consider is the possibility celiac disease / gluten intolerance. It can REALLY mess up a person. I have never been tested for it, but do know that my symptoms calm way down when I stay away from ALL wheat products for a few days. Wheat is in so many things one would never suspect, so it is a bit more complicated than just not eating bread, but is oh SO worth it.

You also might want to look into Kefir (hope I spelled that right) to replace good gut flora. Lisa has written extensively on here about it... And it sounds like a wonderful thing. Just some thoughts.

You have been on those meds for an awful long time. The thing with taking meds is that if they are not curing you, they are merely masking the problem... The problem is still there... Sigh. I hope you figure out the root cause (if possible) and fix it. Good luck to you!"

11/09/2010: Joanne from Newark, Nj: "I have been suffering from IBS for a few years now. Medicines that the doctors have recommended don't really work for me, just leave me feeling drugged. I love to eat fruits and I feel that I really need the vitamins. Unfortunately, even mild fruits cause me to have symptoms of diarrhea. Is there a home remedy to counteract the symptoms that I am having after eating fruit?"

Replies
11/10/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Hi Joanne, luckily this is not a problem that I have got but I have a quick look in one of my books (Trick and Treat by Barry Groves). What he says is that by reducing the carbs you eat you might already feel a lot better. He mentions that wholemeal whet and bran products make the condition worse. Some experts actually came to the conclusion that the fact that people eat so much bran nowadays maybe actually have resulted in more people suffering form the illness. It exacerbates mild complaints. The same goes for diverticular disease.

As far as fruit goes it may also cause IBS and a study shows that between one third to half of the patients were actually fructose intolerant. Patients who complied with a fructose-restricted diet had a lot less complaints so..... It seems you can eat some fruit but not a lot! Once more please understand that I don't know anything about this illness, I am just quoting the book! If you would like me to have a look in my books for more information please let me know! I am sorry I couldn't give you better news..... But try cutting the carbs, maybe then you will be able to eat a bit more fruit!"

11/10/2010: Alfred from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "If good food makes you sick.. Like fruit, do not blame the fruit.. You are full of poisons to handle those fruits right now.. Do not eat unless you are hungry. If your hungry all the time your full of poisons. Your body must get detoxify. If fruit makes you sick, maybe it pulling out the poison too fast.. So it less fruit. In several months you will be able to eat more fruit. Joanne.. If you could check out from the Library.. Book called "The Golden Seven Plus One by C. Samuel West. DN.. ND.. Page 131 35. 1.. This will help you. Alfred also from NJ"

01/19/2010: Syed from Brandon, Florida: "I have lower abdominal pain, bloating and belching. Doctor says it is IBS. I do not have Dairreah, constipation or any other problem. Please advise what I have to do .. I am having from ages"

01/22/2010: Rebekah from Athens, Ga replies: "Syed, I had the same issues about 4 months ago. You might be able to find my post listed under remedies for bloating. I was suffering from abdominal pain every day. What I did was drastically change my diet and start taking digestive enzymes with my meals. I stopped eating all forms of sugar, stopped drinking alcohol, and stopped eating common food allergens like soy, wheat, and most dairy products. It was a difficult journey. 4 months later here I am and I feel great every day, my digestion has improved so much it is amazing. I actually found relief after about 2 weeks on the new eating plan, and my bloated tummy went away completely. I thought that by now I would have gone back to my old way of eating, but honestly I don't want to. I am so much happier now.

I hope you find something that helps you! Best of luck.

02/11/2010: Moses from Washington, Dc replies: "Regarding Belching,

I had this problem for a couple of years and it took me a while to finally put it under control. The biggest problem I found is that GI doctors are not well trained to diagnose such symptoms. So you are on your own.

Belching can be due to :
A) Air swallowing, for that you need to correct your posture specially if you work on computers where one tends to bend forward all day. Also you probably need to lose some weight and exercise.
B) If you belching is due to imbalance in your flora which is most likely the case then you need to start taking probiotics.

And consider taking the following:
1) raw onions
2) fresh pineapple
3) Add hot spicey sauses to your food
4) drink fresh lemon juice before your meals
5) take ginger
6) consider taking water soluble vitamins B-complex and C. Talk to your doctor about taking B-12 1000 mcg ( in addition to the B-complex)
7) consider taking Vitamin D and Omega-3 either as supplements or from fish sources
8) if you can become vegetarian, or reduce animal source proteins
9) cook your own food and buy everything from good stores and organic when possible. Make sure all meat you consume is hormone and antibiotic free.
10) take dark organic raw honey
11) take raw bee pollen
12) eat organic nuts and seeds
13) avocado
14) do not take any anti-acids if you can, I think they make the situation worse

Do breathing exercises and pray"

02/19/2010: Moses from Washington, Dc replies: "This is my second part reply to Belching,
Here are more things that helped me that you can try:

1) Eat carrots and / or drink fresh carrot juice
2) eat raw cabbage / I like the red
3) stop drinking alcoholic and caffeinated beverages for a while
4) stop smoking if you do
5) exercises should include weight lifting and aerobics
6) Probiotics. Start slow on probiotics. You can also try yogurt and Kefir.
7) try organic saukraut
8) stop eating any processed meats such a bologna or sausages
9)Hydrogen Breath Test HBT is good in principle but I do not think the sensitivity or specificity of the test gives reliable information, I mean you know your symptoms and there is no defined cure for SIBO, you just have to experiment with you situation.
10) stay in touch with a doctor just make sure your overall health is ok, but do not rely on the doctor to solve your belching issues
11) eat thyme
12) eat garlic
13) use only Canola oil, no corn oil or other types of Olive oil is supposed to be healthy but it does not work with me.
15) eat slowly and chew your food

Do everything I mentioned but I think you should start with: Probiotics, Garlic and adding hot sauce to your food."
02/19/2010: Shaun from Old York, England replies: "DO NOT EAT CANOLA OIL. OK, I'LL SAY IT AGAIN... DO NOT EAT CANOLA OIL. Check it out. It's bad stuff. Do not get drawn in by the hype. I don't want to sound offensive, but DO NOT EAT CANOLA OIL. 'Awright?"
02/19/2010: Rob from Manhattan, New York replies: "perhaps in moderation it is OK...this quote from Dr. Weil... "I use a little canola oil, but my concerns about canola oil is that although it's largely mono-unsaturated like olive oil, you don't have the epidemiological data for it that we do for olive oil. (That it's a healthy thing to eat.) Most commercial canola oil is heat extracted which damages it, plus the crop is sprayed with pesticides. So if you are going to use canola oil, you want it to be organic expeller pressed canola oil from the health food store."
03/20/2010: Moses from Washington, Dc replies: "I just want to point out that if one type of probiotic does not help you try another brand. It took me a couple of trials until I found the right one."

[QUESTION]  05/29/2009: Cindy from Wausau, WI: "I have symptoms of gas, bloat and diarrhea. I had a positive hydrogen breath test. I been told that I have an overgrowth of bacteria. So far I have not found any food that triggers these symptoms. I have been put on antibiotics such as cipro and doxycycline. These don't seem to help much. I have also been put on an antibiotic called rifaximin-this seems to help a little. I have tried probiotics-this didn't work at all. I have
been told by one GI Doctor to stay away from all carbs. Do you have any suggestions??"

EC: "A hydrogen breath test (or HBT) is used as a clinical medical diagnosis for people with irritable bowel syndrome, and common food intolerances. The test is simple, non-invasive, and is performed after a short period of fasting (typically 8-12 hours)."

[YEA]  11/27/2007: gillian from DF, Mexico: "have the indian spice turmeric on hand for emergencies. Usually IBS has a lot to do with our emotional well-being and suggests something is or many things are stressing us and we need to make changes in ourselves. However becoming perfect can take more than a life time so i recomend turmeric, i swallow half a teaspoonfull when I have a bad case of IBS and in half an hour I am much better. Only thing is as with lots of cures natural and pharmaceutecal, if the IBS keeps coming back eventually the effect of the turmeric or other cure is lessened. what it gives us is a chance to feel better while we try to solve the underlying problems."

[YEA]  11/21/2011: Mira from Strathclyde, Scotland, Uk: "I have been taking a 450mg valerian root capsule each night before bed for the past week and it has led to a marked improvement in my IBS-C symptoms. It might be due to the fact that valerian has a slowing/calming effect on the body and has allowed my digestive system to relax somewhat. The one night I missed a dose, my crampy/gurgly symptoms started coming back during the day, so I am positive that it's the valerian that is helping."

BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[YEA]  08/15/2007: Amanda from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin: "I had suffered from IBS for years and years since I was about 11. It got to be so bad that my lower intestine enlarged to a point where it was pushing up against my stomach and causing severe pain. What really seemed to help me is to take a capsule of flax seed oil with a meal along with a glass of water. It made it so that I was regular. In recent years, I've been doing research on just how many illnesses are related to the consumption of animals and their byproducts such as cheese and the like. In an effort to become a healthier and more compassionate person, I became a vegan and it has done so much for me!! Not only has it completely cleared up the IBS, but numerous other things such as hypoglycemia, acne, made my skin more healthy and radient, made my nails harder, I get a more restful night's sleep, I have a TON more energy, etc. I cannot say enough about how much becoming a vegan has helped my health but the most drastic of a chsnge that I have found is the IBS. Within literally two days I was regular without the help of anything. I didn't have to watch what I ate to make sure that everything would be okay either. It was and is awesome! About an hour after I eat I have to go and it is the biggest relief! I hope those of you with IBS take my advice seriously and just think about cutting at least some of the animal products out of your diet."

Replies
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  06/03/2010: Nihal from Sydney, Australia replies: "a vegan diet definitely helps manage condition. for me this is 100% crucial in management of condition. it won't cure it, but it'll give you some breathing space and energy. a lot of animal products cause IBs and bloating/Diarrhea."

02/11/2011: Kendra from Trenton, Georgia replies: "Hi,

i too have suffered IBS all related to my anxiety! I have anemia too & to make a long story short, was in and out of the hospital because it got so bad that I couldn't even keep an apetite! I got down to 70 pounds! I was diagnosed with anorexia from being unable to eat for so long.

Dr put me through surgery immediately for endometriosis. Then put me on Donnatal for the IBS & ive been on donnatal for about 7-9 months now & I am a totally new person. I started an entire life for once! Im only 20 & started getting ill at 16! So until this year, I was unable to live a 20 yr old's life. I was stuck at home for all those yrs. Until now. I was miserable & I truly wanted nothing more than to die.

so, the donnatal was a miracle drug for me. I hated the idea of having to take pills. It literally repulsed me, but after taking them, the benefits outweighed the risks by a long shot. I can actually live! I was able to enroll in an amazing college for writer's that I was accepted into and have been doing assignments (home & online) for the past 9 months! It's amazing. I nearly cry just thinking about how much ive changed.

I hear my B/F & fam say I'm a totally diff. Person and happy all the time!

So, I've had maybe 7 flare ups since taking donnatal & all the flare ups started when my sis moved in & it was just a serious load of overwhelming stress & I started having those flare-ups. I eventually had to distance myself from these fam members and havent had probs since! I notice flare ups though, when I've been around them & theyve gotten me upset though.

I hate to write such a long comment, but I Wanted to say that I just started wheatgrass & I'm really thinking this stuff has got to be amazing!

I take it in pill form. The juice tastes awful. I get mine from A. M. ORGANICS online. SEARCH THEM! Look them up, and try them! I would'nt buy from any other so far. Also, you get such great deals! You can always get a little extra than what you purchase & that makes it much more pleasing! "
