Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Updated: 11/06/2009

rss feed

"Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), also known as chronic obstructive airway diseases (COAD), is a group of diseases characterized by the pathological limitation of airflow in the airway that is not fully reversible. It refers to an obstruction of airflow, which results in air becoming trapped in the lungs. COPD is the umbrella term for chronic bronchitis, emphysema and a range of other lung disorders. It is most often due to tobacco smoking, but can be due to other airborne irritants such as solvents, as well as congenital conditions such as alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. It is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S." (Wikipedia)

TED'S REMEDIES

01/27/2008: Ted from Bangkok , Thailand writes: "Over the past couple of days I have been researching and performing experiments to find a remedy based on looking into the cause of emphysema/COPD.

Since a large majority of people had emphysema came from smoking I further investigated what components of smoking was responsible for the emphysema and why this situation can't be reversed, but what I found is that it CAN be reversed.

If we look into the components of the smoke as well as photos of lung samples of people with emphysema, this should give you a fair idea what is causing the problem. A smoke from a cigarettes has many volatile oils, smoke particulates, naphtha, nicotine, and tar. What is most interesting is that volatile oils are volatile, so that won't have a lasting effect on the lungs. A smoke particulates basically is expelled when mucus is created, and are often coughed out. A naphtha is less volatile and may slowly sublime. This leaves the sticky resinous component that most people call it tar. It shows itself as dark very sticky spots on the lungs. These resinous sticky black substance are non volatile. It is hydrophobic and can't be dissolved with water, mucous can't lift it out because it is sticky. The body under normal conditions can't remove the tar.

These black resin or rosin substance that is very sticky from a plant and has some smoke particulates, but mostly it is referred to as pitch (resin) that stays into the lung forever and the tar accumulates along the lifetime of the smoker and therefore the lungs get more black tar making breathing more difficult. Therefore a simple remedy is simply to find a suitable solvent that will dissolve the tar. Since a tar is hydrophobic, it is somewhat soluble, mostly anyways in alcohol solution. But in organic chemistry the universal organic solvent (almost) that is biologically safe is DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) or a sister MSM which may be a good solvent to dissolve the tar found in the lungs. I remembered at the time of storing a smoker's lung as a student but was particularly lazy and put them into an unknown solution which later proved to be DMSO which removed the tar out of the lungs thus irritating the teacher that I just cleaned out the smokers lungs! At the time I was not aware of the link between emphysema and smokers lung. Another suitable substance of MSM can also be used to dissolve the tar which caused the emphysema. Once the tar removes itself the lungs will no longer have the tar to block the breathing sacs of the aveolar. Not only that but the tar won't cause the irritations to the lungs which leads to inflammation, thus choking the vicitims whenever breathing passages are narrowed from the inflammation.

Therefore a simple remedy is either DMSO or MSM. So I decided to test this by getting a coal tar solution and burn the alcohol off leaving a sticky substance. I added some DMSO and see if they were any soluble to the coal tar. Surprisingly the DMSO was quite soluble of coal tar. As to whether MSM is equally soluble as a DMSO, it may not be as much, but at least what is known is it is can also be used to dissolve a wide range of organic solvents including cigarettes tar. The issue appears to be to take MSM or DMSO in high amounts necessary to remove them may take some time, but continued use will reduce the tar buildup that cause black lungs or black dots as the tar will dissolve itself whenever the blood his high in MSM or DMSO and is eliminated out slowly in the bloodstream as the capilaries with the DMSO, where the tar resin resides get dissolved. Another more direct way is to use a DMSO nebulizer, but so that the DMSO won't cause skin irritation, at least for me a 30-50% DMSO mixed with water should cause minimum irritation, while more dilute may limit its solubility of tar, ti will at least slowly dissolve itself without the irritation. It is therefore needed that to find a higher DMSO concentration used as nebulizers that doesn't cause irritation. So for me an ideal concentration appears to be about 50%, a more conservative number might be 30% so it is possible that some people can try higher concentration that does not cause irritation, but 30-50% is usually the best concentration to at least give it a try for me. When DMSO as nebulizers enter the lungs the resins will uptake the DMSO and gets dissolve. So that not TOO MUCH dissolved out of the lungs into the bloodstream, it should not be done too long such that a person becomes nauseated.

This I might also follow with taking some MSM as MSM don't have the oysters smell, such as one tablespoon with plenty of water. It should be noted that MSM that I tried in the past, if taken too much may lead to sudden thirst in water. This is because MSM has an effect of purifying the body ridding of other resinous material in the body which leads to regularly occuring allergy in certain areas of the body instead of other parts. Resinous tar substance that accumulates in the body is also removed whenever MSM or DMSO is taken, but rather slowly.

Therefore the best remedy based on physical evidence appears to be the use of MSM, the more I can take the better the body can get rid of the substance, but at the time a nebulizer DMSO should also be used. I remember someone has tried for emphysema and was helpful, but at the time no one was aware of how DMSO or MSM works, how much or how long and what it does and then since everyone was at a loss for explaination, the placebo effect was assumed or since no proper explaination was available, everyone at the forum simply forgot about the remedy or its potential effectiveness."

[YEA]  08/12/2007: Sandy from Hendersonville, TN writes: "re: COPD & Lung Cancer and virgin coconut oil -- I found almost immediate relief from thick mucous taking VCO. I started out with 1 T. with each meal, sometimes in tea or room temp juice. It thins the mucous making it easy to cough up. I also drink 2 quarts of water in addition to the VCO. The water alone did not help. My nasal passages are both open for the first time in years and breathing is much easier. VCO makes the skin lovely."

[YEA]  12/07/2006: Maddy from Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, UK writes: "I have asthma and bronchiectasis (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Was diagnosed 8 years ago. I was suffering from monthly (sometimes twice monthly) chest infections, and had to take antibiotics for every outbreak and becoming more and more resistant and sensitive to the drugs. I started using Colloidal Silver in my nebuliser about a year ago now and have not had a chest infection since. As soon as I feel my sputum changing (from clear to yellow) I use the colloidal silver and the infection does not develop any further. Some times I have to do it more than once, but mostly once is enough. I hope this will help anybody out there that is struggling with the same problem. Good luck!!"

07/14/2007: Patsy from Brisbane, Australia replies: "Colloidal Silver - re comments by Maddy from Nottingham UK 12/7/2006 - can you please advise me the amount of c.s. maddy uses in her nebuliser for bronchiectasis. I have had bronchiectasis for 50 years, now chronic and fed up with antibiotics - maybe she can help. COPD ADVICE

06/23/2009: James from Silver Creek, GA writes: "For the many sufferers from COPD:

1) Get a baseline spirometry test done by an MD,

2) have a CT-scan,

3) have a sputum culture and sensitivity testing for possible pathogens,

4) items #3 and #4 help to rule out more serious complications like bronchiectasis and colonized pseudomonas aeruganosa, which is nearly impossible to eradicate with antibiotics,

5) acetyl L-carnitine 1000 mg. 3x/day has been proven to loosen mucous secretions and helps to promote their elimination (an amino acid available in health food stores). 6) avoid 2nd hand tobacco smoke, campfire smoke and all other lung irritants.

7) Even the most serious infections may be helped by intermittent prescribed nebulized antibiotics (tobramycin and colistin) when necessary. 8) MSM is safe to use in fairly high daily dosages (start with 1 tsp. 3x/day and gradually increase to 1 tbsp 3x/day.

9) Unfortunately very little research has been done in humans with DMSO for COPD, which should probably help some antibiotics to become effective against MDRAs (multiple drug resistant antibiotics).

10) Nebulized hypertonic saline has also been reported to be beneficial for loosening pulmonary secretions in COPD."

06/22/2009: Bill from Lemolia, MO replies: "(1) UNCERTAIN

Hello Ted and EarthClinic -- Here are some results from Ted's COPD remedy (DMSO and MSM). These tests and results are not very scientific, but we did follow most of Ted's suggestions. TWO middle-aged males --Former Long Term Smokers-- tried the following:

1.) Drank ONE TABLEspoon of (powdered) MSM in 8 oz glass of water. (This stuff tastes TERRIBLE! May try mixing with juice next time.) 30 minutes later, we each inhaled FIFTY (50) deep breaths of 30% DMSO to 70% water. Neither of us noticed any immediate results.

2.) 5 Hours later, we each inhaled ONE HUNDRED (100) deep breaths from the nebulizer, with the same dilution ratio -- Neither of us noticed any immediate results.

3.) DAY TWO: We each inhaled ONE HUNDRED FIFTY (150) deep breaths from the nebulizer, only at 70% DMSO to 30% water. (NOTE: This may be over the ratio that Ted recommends) Still no results were evident. We were hoping for more noticeable/immediate results, but I believe we just didn't stay with it long enough.

4.) We each tried 70% DMSO to 30% water in an ATOMIZER (Nasal type --Afrin bottle-- DO NOT INHALE THROUGH THE NOSE IF YOU TRY THIS--MOUTH ONLY!!) Each took a VERY DEEP BREATH while getting 5-6 pumps out of the ATOMIZER. (THIS ALSO TASTED UNBELIEVABLY BAD!). Still, no obvious results.

We are suspending our experiments until we decide which approach to continue. I WILL POST ANY ADDITIONAL RESULTS, OR COMMENTS RECEIVED FROM TED. Thanks to EARTHCLINIC AND TED !!

I will email this to Ted and hope he can add some additional comments or suggestions. My questions to Ted, his availability allowing are:

1.) Should we continue with 150 deep inhales of 70% DMSO per day?
2.) If so, about how many days of treatment until we would expect some results?
3.) What are your thoughts on the 70% DMSO/30% water via ATOMIZER?
4.) Are the MSM AND NIACIN (500 MG/DAY, NON TIME RELEASE) crucial to success?
5.) Any other comments or suggestions?"

06/24/2009: Bill from Lemolia, MO replies: "TED'S RESPONSE AND SUGGESTIONS:

A DMSO may dissolve the tar if the congestion is caused by a tar. If the lungs were damaged physically of non tar in nature, the DMSO won't work. A curcumin taken a couple of times a day or a curcumin mixture with DMSO appears more suitable. A 70% DMSO may hurt the throat or lungs as concentration maybe too high for some people.

1.) Should we continue with 150 deep inhales of 70% DMSO per day?

Most improvement appears that some DMSO was taken internally and some DMSO nebulizers were used but the improvement is a gradual one. A clogged capillaries or a damaged one can be due to tar, calcium or tissue damage. A tissue damage then some healing is needed with a curcumin supplements.

2.) If so, about how many days of treatment until we would expect some results?

It takes at least a month. A short term two or three days would get any results. It's done gradually.

3.) What are your thoughts on the 70% DMSO/30% water via ATOMIZER?

Some people don't like the 70% DMSO as it stings their nose and throat. While its result maybe faster, it maybe irritating.

4.) Are the MSM AND NIACIN (500 MG/DAY, NON TIME RELEASE) crucial to success?

I don't like Niacin use because of the flush, but I do like the addition of MSM and DMSO. A niacin use may help some breathing but never time release. An aspirin taken 30 minutes before a niacin used will stop the flush and may help the capillary circulation into the lungs to be return to some extent by clearing some blocked circulation. But this doesn't resolve the calcification that may occur also.

5.) Any other comments or suggestions?

A damage lung tissue requires healing, and this is where curcumin comes in, taken internally or perhaps what I am looking into is the possibility of adding only a small amount of curcumin as a nebulizer. That's just the current possibilities I am looking into. If it take years for COPD to happen getting results in a matter of days is not possible. An objective measure appears to be a blood oxygen test but after a month's of use. Not all COPD are due to tar, but can also be tissue damage in the lungs, and hence the curcumin. A capillaries may be clogged not from the tar, but also fats and calcium has to be considered also.

Ted"

HOT COOKING SPICES

1 YEA

[YEA]  06/22/2009: Rick from Boscawen, NH writes: "Spices and COPD, Chronic Bronchitis:

A year ago, I was diagnosed with chronic Bronchitis - COPD, so severe that my ears turned blue from lack of Oxygen. My blood pressure was very high, too. The DOT immediately yanked my Health card for driving truck. When I went to the Dr. my Oxy saturation level was 81. He put me on an inhalor and I had to use a Nebulizer several times a day. Nothing really changed. I could breathe a little better, but was still able to walk only for short distances. I love to cook, and tried to think of the healthiest people that I know. I started cooking with spices from China, India, and other Asian areas. I use curry powders (in various heat ranges), Tumeric, Cayenne, Garlic, Ginger, Paprika, Mustard, Wasabi, and others. I use one or more of these ingredients in every meal, and most snacks, that I cook. About two months ago I had a physical, blood work, and EKG in preparation for surgery. My lungs no longer "wheeze" (I do have a bad day once in a while...but not DAILY); my blood pressure was normal; my Oxy sat level is 95 to 97 percent; (both) Cholesterols were at healthy levels, and, except for my COPD, I am as healthy as can be! The best result of eating all that good, spicy-hot, healthy food is that I can walk at least a half a mile without "running out of breath." I have NEVER posted to any Website but feel that people should be aware of the benefits of spices and herbs. I have now found a local store that sells 1 pound packages of spices, instead of paying $4 to $7 in grocery stores for those little bottles. The savings are phenomenal. This is the best site that I have found that re-enforces my belief in hot foods. Thank you EARTH CLINIC"

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  04/30/2009: Dee from Dayton, Ohio writes: "i have copd & on 2 inhalers & one powered inhaler. first 2 every 6 hrs as needed ,the third 2 xs a day. was 49 when informed of this, am 54 now& this treatment is not working. have a couple air purifers in home to clean air but this really brings little comfort. my dr. says there is no cure for this but we can control it to some point. but i can"t seem to settle for this answer when i am finding it harder to breath sometimes the pressure in my chest so bad i am gaspping just to take a breath. feels like a heavy rock laying on my chest.

then i started to do reseach on h2o2 therapy. using 35%food grade hydrogen peroxide. dosage schedule for undiluted 35% h2o2 first day 3 drops, 3 times a day .. second day 4 drops, 3 times a day ... increasing each day by two drops until you get up to 25 drops, 3x per day x 25 drops= 75 drops.at your peak for 1 / 3 weeks ... then you start to reduce the dosage like 25 drops every other day, 4 times a week ...25 drops every third day for 2 weeks .... to 25 drops every 4 days for 3 weeks. DO NOT stop taking it if you feel sick until you complete the program because this sickness is due to the toxics in your body that are being destroyed by the h2o2..... boy i must be full of toxins cause i feel sick to my stomack but i really can inhale/ exhale much easier. i am trying to do this to the end but i can only get up to 25 drops 2 x s per day for 2 more days & i will start to back down. have i done this all wrong?"

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE INHALATION METHOD

1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[YEA]  08/04/2009: George from Bedford, Tx writes: "After living with COPD for several years my condition recently got worst to the point that I could barely manage simple chores like taking out the garbage. 2 wks ago my Pulmonary Doctor told me to use Oxygen 24/7 and to use an Albuterol inhaler twice a day and as needed for emergencies.

A few days later I had a serious incident from trying to climb some stairs, and almost passed out. The next day I had another incident from a minor exertion. I believe that an angel must have directed me to the earthclinic web site because I found the Hydrogen Peroxide treatment there. I am lucky enough to have a better system to administer the Hydrogen Peroxide than using asquirt bottle. I have a machine for my Sleep Apnea where I sleep with a mask that covers my nose and mouth and the machine provides positive air pressure to keep my wind pipe open. The machine also has a water tank of about 6 oz to keep the air moisturized.

I began my treatment with standard drug store 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, and dialuted it 50/50 with filtered water. I braethed that mixture for 8 hours that night and in the morning my lungs were clear. I didn't have the usual coughing fit to clear my lungs of mucus. The next night I used a 30% mixture instead of 50% and the results were just as good. I stopped using my hand held inhalers entierly. I again cut the dose down to 20% and still had the great results.

On the 10th day I awoke with so much energy that I changed the bed sheets, vacuumed the floor and cleaned the bath room. 2 weeks before this I could barely walk across the room.

The Peroxide treatment is a blessing to me."

09/04/2009: Jody from Tyler, Tx replies: "George, I am happy that you've had such good results with the h202. I had previously tried Bill Munro's method of inhaling while spraying from a nasal spray bottle. I was already sick at the time and that method caused a deal of irritation in my lungs--perhaps the spray droplets were too large, don't know. Anyway, I ended up in hospital...I was also trying to nebulize some colloidal silver----desperate to get rid of the infection.

I'm currently at the stage of copd where one infection follows on the heels of the last one.

I'm a bit afraid to try the h202...do you think it would be ok to use some in my nebulizer and if so should I also have the albuterol in there or just h202 and water? I also have an oxygen concentrator with a moisturizer bottle on it...not sure of the measure..looks like about 8 0z...would that be a good way to inhale it?

Thanks for any help you might give me."

10/12/2009: Patricia from Flower Mound, Tx replies: "I have COPD that started to get worse when I moved into an apartment with a bad mold problem. My condition has deteriorated so much in the last year that I'm on oxygen 24/7, despite the fact that the physiology of my lung tissue hasn't changed, according to a CAT scan in 2003 and another one six years later. I suspect aspergillus, but could be wrong. My doctor did a blood test and says it was negative.

Anyway, I've tried about everything including a psychic naturopath, except the H2O2 therapy. I made an appointment with a Doctor in Fort Worth who does it intravenously. These treatments are expensive, and I have no insurance since my insurer rescinded my policy when I was in treatment for kidney cancer [which fortunately the recent CAT scan for my lung caught in an early stage], so I don't want to do this unless it will help or if there is a less expensive way to get the job done.

Has anyone taken the H2O2 by mouth. If so, how much, how often and how long before results. What were the results, if any. I'm a little afraid of the inhaled therapy because of the condition of my lungs already, or does anyone have advice for me? I'm a writer and a filmmaker and this oxygen thing is totally limiting my life."

10/15/2009: George from Bedford, Tx replies: "Jody from Tyler Tx has asked about doses and how to administer Hydrogen Peroxide. I can only tell about my experiance and cannot make any recomendations to anyone else. I use it primarily in am Sleep Apnia mask [PAP]. I use a solution strength of about 20%. That is 1/4 cup H2O2 to 1 cup of Distiled water. I breath it all night and if my lungs feel a little irritated I add another half cup water to make it about 15%.

I also use my nebulizer one or two times a day and there I use a 50% strength for about 3 min.

I believe I am killing all the bacteria, mold and fungus in my lungs as I don't have any more coughing or mucus since the first day I tried H2O2.

My Pulmanologist, Cardiologist, and my Gen Practioner are all amzazed at my improvment. None of them have ever heard of inhaling H2O2 before.

Good luck and let me know how you are doing at my email address"

Anyway I have COPD and lately I can barely walk to the bathroom because I can't breathe from long time smoking, so I have been reading this. I tried Bill's method of putting 3%HP in a pump bottle undiluted. Then I put 3mg in my nebulizer and it's kinda strong so guess you can cut it with water. Now I'm using 35% food grade 1 drop per 2oz distilled water and then putting 3mg in nebulizer. Cheaper then using an oxygen tank I think and did give me instant relief so guess I'm going to do this about every two hrs and see how it goes then I probably will start the schedule back over which is 3 drops three x's a day then increasing one drop every day until you get to 25 drops then you taper back down to only using 5 drops per week"

[YEA]  03/30/2008: Nicole from Chicago, IL writes: "I wanted to say that if people have extremely chronic respiratory or nervous conditions, they ought to find out if they are living or working in a moldy building. Nothing cures that but getting out or fixing the problem in the house!"

MSM

1 YEA

[YEA]  09/21/2009: Kim from Birmingham, England writes: "I have been taking MSM for a while now and I have to say my asthma/COPD is much improved. However, MSM does contain sulphates which some individuals may be sensitive to and may cause some side effects. I have read from a very good source that this can be largely overcome by taking a supplementation of molybedenum(500mcg). Hope this helps."

REMEDIES NEEDED

08/27/2009: Michael H from Grankulla, Nyland, Finland writes: "COPD

Hi my name is Michael and I'm living in Finland.
I yesterday was told that I will ASAP have to prepare for lung transplant...
Dear god of what I hear only 40 % here make it and then after...
So last night I was searching for cures and came across this page - WONDERFULL.
Please tell me did anyone get so much better that they could avoid a transplant?
And maybe even get better????
I'd love to be able to share ...even on phone or Skype with persons who have
any positive results....like Ted (Is all well, I'd like to know)
I must admit that I only understand half of what Ted's experience is
All about but am willing to learn, as the other option is close.
Thanks
Michael H"

THYME

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/15/2007: Brenda from San Antonio, Texas writes: "My 79 year old Mother had an upper respiratory infection. She could not shake the cough. I had recently read an article that said steep 1 teaspoon of your kitchen variety thyme in a cup of hot water, as you would a teabag, and sip. She tried it and it worked. Encouraged, I told my friend who has the start of COPD about it, she tried it and is amazed also. The article stated it relaxes the bronchials. Yet another alternative."
